Sinai: Weapons Hidden in Rocket

Egyptian security forces discovered half a ton of explosives outside the Sinai town of El-Arish on Sunday, according to the Bethlehem-based Maan news. The explosives were hidden inside an old rocket.
The unique hiding place selected by weapons smugglers for the contraband is what led to its discovery. Local villagers stumbled across the remains of the rocket – left over from a war between Egypt and Israel decades ago – and reported its existence to authorities out of concern that it may still pose a threat.
Upon their arrival, the forces realized that the rocket contained new weapons. Besides the half ton of TNT, the weapons cache also included anti-aircraft shells.
The weapons were packaged in bags, apparently to prepare them for delivery via the tunnels between Gaza and Egypt.
Many Bedouin residents of the Sinai Peninsula have become involved in smuggling contraband into Gaza, including weapons and terrorists. Smugglers also bring drugs, criminals, and illegal migrants into Israel via the Negev.
Egypt's police have recently cracked down on smuggling activity, blocking several tunnels to Gaza and arresting an estimated more than 1,000 Bedouin. The Egyptian police have also repeatedly opened fire on illegal migrants attempting to enter Israel, killing more than 20 so far in 2010.
Some Bedouin in the Sinai have argued that they have few economic opportunities, and have turned to smuggling to make a living. Tourism to Sinai has dropped in recent years, due largely to fear of terrorism. Israel's Counter-Terrorism Bureau has issued an extremely high alert for the once-popular Sinai, where there have been threats of Gaza terrorist cells planning to kidnap or murder Israeli citizens.
Gaza-Bound Missiles Found in Sinai

Egyptian security forces uncovered over the weekend 190 anti-tank missiles and 10 anti-tank bombs, ready for smuggling from Sinai into Gaza. Egypt had just announced the day before that there are no terrorist organizations in the Sinai Peninsula.
The security forces raided storehouses in northern Sinai as part of a wide-scale police operation to ferret out drugs and weapons.
IDF and Shabak leaders have warned in recent months that world Islamic Jihad terrorist groups have established many terror cells throughout the Sinai. The gangs have reportedly amassed large amounts of weapons and ammunition, and are constantly engaged in recruiting members.
"Very Dangerous Place"
This past Wednesday, a special Israeli committee on terrorism categorized the Sinai as a “very dangerous” place for Israelis, following intelligence warnings of planned terror attacks. The committee stated that Israelis in the Sinai are under “very high concrete threats,” and that they should not spend the upcoming holidays there.
In response, a high-ranking Egyptian military official announced that the peninsula is under his country’s full security control, and “not even one terrorist organization is present there.”
The Egyptian official said, just a day before the discovery of the Gaza-bound rockets, “These are untrue rumors, started by Israeli tourism companies that wish to promote domestic Israeli tourism.”
Sinai has been under Egyptian government control since 1906. It was captured by Israeli, French and British forces in 1956, after Egypt closed the Suez Canal to Israeli shipping, but was “returned" to Egypt several months later under heavy international pressure. Israel captured it again during the Six Day War in 1967, heading off Egyptian threats to “throw Israel into the sea.” Israel retained the Sinai for 15 years, until 1982, after Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty.

In de nacht van 3 op 4 november hebben Israëlische commando’s 160 kilometer ten westen van Israël in internationale wateren, in de buurt van Cyprus, een schip geënterd dat was volgeladen met 300 ton aan wapens en munitie bestemd voor de Libanese terreurbeweging Hezbollah. Het schip, de ‘Francop’ voer onder de vlag van Antiqua en was vanuit de Egyptische havenplaats Damietta onderweg naar Syrië met een tussenstop in Beiroet in Libanon. Israëlische commando’s van de Shayelet elite eenheid, bestormden het schip dat werd bemand door een Poolse kapitein en 11 bemanningsleden, die geen tegenstand boden. Het schip vervoerde vierhonderd containers en werd overgebracht naar de Israëlische havenplaats Asdod waar bleek dat 36 containers
( ! ) waren volgestouwd met:
- 9000 mortieren (totaal: 324.000 mortieren)
- antitankmijnen
- 600.000 kogels voor kalasjnikovs (totaal: 21600.000 kogels)
- 3000 raketten (totaal: 108.000)
- 20.000 granaten (720.000)

De lading wapens was in de Egyptische havenplaats Damietta overgeladen van een schip dat voer onder de vlag van de Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) op de ‘Francop’. De Iraanse rederij staat op de zwarte lijst van de VN-veiligheidsraad zoals is vastgelegd in resolutie 1803. Deze resolutie vraagt aan landen waar de schepen van deze rederij aanmeren, deze te controleren. Het Iraanse schip was vertrokken uit de Iraanse havenstad Bandar Abbas en werd voor het eerst door de Amerikanen gespot in de Golf van Aden. Deze informeerden Israël dat vervolgens voorstelde het schip in de Rode zee te bombarderen, maar dat werd door de Amerikanen afgewezen. Iran probeerde de geheime diensten van het westen te misleiden door de lading in de Egyptische haven over te laden. Egypte deed geen enkele moeite de lading te controleren omdat, zo werd gezegd, het schip alleen maar ‘normale handel’ vervoerde. De Iraanse wapensmokkel naar Hamas in Gaza en Hezbollah in Libanon loopt voor een deel via Egypte dat al jaren doelbewust de andere kant opkijkt, als de schepen het Suezkanaal passeren of als colonnes vrachtwagens met wapens over land naar Gaza worden gebracht. Hierdoor kan Hamas voortdurend in bezit komen van nieuw wapentuig. Hamas testte onlangs voor het eerst een uit Iran afkomstige raket (C-802 Silkworm, oorspronkelijk van Chinese origine) die een bereik van 60 kilometer heeft en daarmee Tel Aviv kan bereiken. Volgens gegevens van Amerikaanse en Israëlische spionagesatellieten zijn er maandelijks twee tot drie grote konvooien met Iraanse wapens onderweg via de Soedan-Egypte-Sinaï route, naar Gaza.
Zowel Syrië, Iran als de terreurbeweging Hezbollah ontkennen vanzelfsprekend iets met het schip van doen te hebben en veroordeelden de Israëlische actie als ‘Israëlische piraterij in internationale wateren’. Het schip zou vanuit Syrië onderweg naar Iran zijn geweest en alleen maar ‘gewone goederen’ vervoerd hebben. Na controle in de Israëlische havenplaats Asdod bleken de wapens verborgen te zitten achter normale burgervracht.
Volgens officials is de hoeveelheid in beslag genomen wapens op de Francop, het tienvoudige van de in januari 2002 onderschepte 'Karine A', die eveneens uit Iran afkomstig was. De Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu prees de acties van de marine en verklaarde dat de wapens waren bedoeld om ingezet te worden tegen Israëlische steden. Volgens het hoofd van de militaire inlichtingendienst, Amos Yadlin, voert Iran haar 'war by proxy' (indirecte oorlog) tegen Israël verder op door steeds meer en betere wapens naar Hezbollah en Hamas te smokkelen. Zorgwekkend daarbij is het feit dat de wapensmokkelroutes niet alleen door Egypte, maar inmiddels ook via Turkije lopen.
De Telegraaf meldde op 16 oktober 2009 dat schepen van Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, ook regelmatig de Rotterdamse haven aandoen en geen strobreed in de weg worden gelegd. Zoals is gebleken worden deze schepen terecht beschouwd als één grote dekmantel voor het vervoer van verboden militaire goederen voor de productie van rakketen en kernwapens. Ook in Nederland blijkt nauwelijks enige sprake van controle ondanks dat deze rederij op de zwarte lijst staat.
De afgelopen tijd voerde het Israëlische leger meerdere succesvolle anti-terreuroperaties uit om de Iraanse wapensmokkel naar de moslimterroristen in Libanon en in Gaza tegen te gaan. Zo werd in het voorjaar een onder Cypriotische vlag varend vrachtschip vol met Iraanse wapens en raketten, verhinderd om deze lading voor de kust van Gaza te lossen. De wapens werden uiteindelijk in de Cypriotische havenstad Larnaca gelost. Ook deze lading kwam uit Iran en was bestemd voor Hamas. Ook heeft Israël half januari in Soedan een konvooi bestaande uit 23 vrachtwagens opgeblazen die waren volgeladen met raketten uit Iran. De levering uit Iran was in Port Soedan aan de Rode Zee op vrachtwagens overgeladen.

"Last week 20 rockets and mortar rounds were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. The Government's policy is clear: Any firing at our territory will be responded to strongly and immediately."
Both Netivot and Ashkelon were hit by Grad rockets in the recent rocket escalation. On New Years' eve, two Russian-made Grad artillery rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip and struck Israel, with one hitting the southern town of Netivot, a city of about 26,000.
The Color Red system did not go off at the time of attack, and Netivot residents had no warning of the incoming rocket attack. No damages were reported but one woman suffered shock.
The last Grad rocket to strike Netivot had exploded near a synagogue nine months ago, causing heavy damage to the building.
A week later, on Thursday, January 7, a Grad-type Katyusha rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck a field south of Ashkelon, causing no damage or injuries. Air sirens, however, did sound, sending Ashkelon residents into panic.
Ashkelon, a coastal city with over 100,000 residents, has been a target of Palestinian-fired Katyusha rockets for nearly four years.
Since the start of 2010, tens of Iranian-supplied mortar rockets have also hit southern Israel. Terrorists also fired an anti-tank missile at IDF troops on the Gaza border.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for the recent firing of the rockets.
Hamas boasted on Friday Jan. 8, that it had managed to smuggle new types of weapons into the Gaza Strip. Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, published photographs on its website of the new weapons. The weapons include missiles with a double warhead, 107-mm caliber missiles that are designed to penetrate fortified structures and a new type of armor piercing RPG missile.
Abu Ubeida, the Hamas spokesman stated that the group "has thousands of fighters and good weapons capable of harming Israel."
Former OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yom Tov Samia predicted on Sunday that another war with Hamas was inevitable.
"We are before another round in Gaza," Samia told Army Radio in an interview.
"I am very skeptical about the possibility that Hamas will suddenly surrender or change its ways without being hit much more seriously than it was during Cast Lead."
