Border Police at the entrance to the Patriarch’s Cave Tuesday morning foiled a terrorist attack by an Arab who tried to stab them to death. No one was injured. The terrorist, described as being in his 30s, aroused the suspicion of Border Police, who asked him to stop for a security check. He then pulled out his knife and tried to attack them before being overpowered.
Security officials are questioning the attacker.
Attempts to stab Jews at the Patriarchs’ Cave have become more common recently, and terrorist activity is on the increase in all of Judea and Samaria.
Soldiers prevented a terrorist attack on Monday at the Kalandia checkpoint, south of Ramallah and north of Jerusalem on Monday when they spotted a Palestinian Authority Arab lunging at them with an axe.
In a separate incident, a guard at a security fence checkpoint shot a terrorist who was armed with a knife. He was wounded lightly and was treated at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Authority is committed to halt terrorism and destroy the terrorist infrastructure in Judea and Samaria, as well as halt incitement.
Hevron, a Jewish City From Time Immemorial and Forever

In honor of 'Shabbat Hevron', when Abrahams's purchase of Mearat Hamachpela [Tomb of the Patriarchs] is in the Torah reading, thousands will make their way to the second holiest city in Judaism to spend an uplifting and spiritual Shabbat praying at the Meara and learning about the city. Arutz Sheva brings you the city's history, written by the tireless spokesman of the Jewish Community of Hevron.Hevron is the first Jewish city in the land of Israel , home of our patriarchs and matriarchs — Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and Sarah, Rebecca and Leah. King David ruled from Hevron for more than seven years before moving the capital to Jerusalem .
Jews have lived in Hevron almost continuously for thousands of years. At Tel Hevron, commonly known as 'Tel Rumeida,' artifacts were discovered dating to the era of the Patriarch Abraham. 'L'Melech' (King) seals, 2,700 years old, inscribed with the word 'Hevron' in ancient Hebrew were uncovered there by archeologists.
Our community offices are in a neighborhood founded in 1540 by Jews exiled from Spain in 1492. When returned to Hebron in 1967, Jews did not occupy a foreign city; rather, they came back home. Jewish presence in Hevron came to an abrupt end only in August 1929, when Arab riots led to the murder of 67 Jews and the wounding of 70. All survivors were exiled from the city by the ruling British.
Following the riots, massacre and exile in 1929, a small group of Jews returned to
Hevron in 1931. About thirty families lived in the city until just after Passover, 1936, when they were expelled by the British.
Following the 1967 Six-Day War, Jews again had access to the first Jewish city in . It must be clearly understood: when returned to Hevron in 1967, Jews did not occupy a foreign city; rather, they came back home.
In 1968 Jews officially came back to Hevron . The day before Passover in April, 1968 a group of families arrived at the Park Hotel in Hevron . The proprietor rented them half of the kitchen, which they promptly koshered. The women and children slept in the rooms; the men and boys slept in the lobby and on the floor. It was the first Jewish Pesach in Hevron in decades.
Moshe Dayan, then Minister of Defense, arrived in Hevron shortly after Passover. Following several weeks of discussions he offered the group two choices: either be forcibly removed from the city, or go live in the Hevron military compound, several kilometers outside the center of the city. This building, originally a British police station, had been transformed into the Israeli military Headquarters of Judea. It was not overly conducive to a civilian lifestyle.
Dayan must have expected that the young families, including women and babies, would soon throw up their arms in frustration at the poor living conditions and leave of their own accord. Dayan was partially correct. The group did eventually leave. But first they lived in the military headquarters for two and half years, until the first neighborhood of the newly founded Hevron suburb, Kiryat Arba, was completed. There was, however, a yearning to return to Hevron , to Beit Hadassah, to the 450 year old Jewish Quarter, home of the ancient Avraham Avinu Shul, to reside adjacent to Ma'arat HaMachpela. Attempts were made, again and again, all leading to failure.
Only in 1979, when Menachem Begin was Prime Minister, did a group of 10 women and 40 children succeed in setting up house in the basement of the old medical center, Beit Hadassah, in the middle of the city. Living in adverse conditions for close to a year, these women and childen became the nucleus of Hevron 's renewed Jewish community.
In 1980, following the murder of six young men outside Beit Hadassah, the Israeli government finally gave official recognition and authorization of Hebron 's Jewish Community.
The present Jewish Community of Hevron numbers more than 1,000 people, including almost 100 families, hundreds of children, and some 250 post-high school yeshiva students studying at Yeshivat Shavei Hevron in Beit Romano. The reason there aren't more people living in Hevron is simply because of lack of space. There are not any apartments available. That is, perhaps, a misnomer. There are apartments available that we are presently unable to utilize. We have been unjustifiably expelled from 12 apartments that we lived in. Clearly, were there more room in Hevron , there would be many more Jews living in the city.
However, in spite of the small size of the community, according to the statistics received from the IDF and Civil Administration, hundreds of thousands of people visit
Hevron annually. Worldwide support, including Jews and gentiles, is overwhelming. Groups from Europe, Scandinavia and even the Far East tour Hevron .
Why do we choose to live in Hevron ? Again, the answer is quite simple. A few years ago, a group of people associated with the New Israel Fund visited Hevron .
Following a short visit on the Jewish side of the city, they crossed the 'border' and met with Hevron 's Arab mayor, Mustepha Natsche. They asked him whether Jews were allowed to pray at Ma'arat HaMachpela, the second holiest site to the Jewish people in the world. His answer greatly surprised them. He said no. 'Ma'arat HaMachpela is a mosque, and only Moslems can pray in a Mosque,' said Arab Mayor Mustepha Natsche.
This was reiterated by Natsche's deputy, Kamal Dweck. In an interview he also stated that Jews and Christians may not pray in the Tomb of the Patriarchs 'because it is not a church or a synagogue; it is a mosque and only Moslems can worship in a mosque.' This lie was raised again by the Arab world when Israel put Hevron on its list of Heritage Sites.
The Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs was off-limits to Jews for 700 years. During that time Jews, (as well as Christians), were not allowed inside the 2,000 year old Herodian structure atop the Caves of Machpela. Today we are told by Hevron's Arab Mayor and deputy mayor that should the Palestinian Authority ever regain control all of
Hevron, again this holy site will be closed to anyone not Moslem.
There are those who are skeptical. How then, can one explain what happened to Joseph's Tomb in Shechem. According to the Olso Accords this holy site was to remain accessible to Jews. However, following the killing of an Israeli soldier at the tomb, was forced to abandon it. The result was the total destruction of the building which was burned to the ground. And if the Arabs had their way, Kever Rachel would have long ago been turned over to the Palestinian Authority. They claim that her tomb, too, is only a Muslim site.
The only reason that Ma'arat HaMachpela is still accessible to Jews is because there is a permanent Jewish presence in the city. The disappearance of the Jewish Community of Hevron would be tantamount to abandoning our Patriarchs and Matriarchs.
Could any Jew, be they religious or secular, dream of abandoning the Fathers and Mothers of our people?
What is our goal, living in Hevron ? Despite media reports, the goal of Hevron 's Jewish community is not to expel the Arabs living here. Anyone of any race or religion should be able to live in Hevron.
However, we demand that our Arab neighbors accept the fact that the Jews have an eternal, legitimate right to live in the first Jewish city in the land of Israel . This is our goal: living normal lives, just as anyone else, anywhere in. Our goal is to ensure that our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be able to live in Hevron . Our goal is to make sure that all Jews will have access to Ma'arat HaMachpela, that Jews will never again be told that this holy site is 'off-limits' because 'you are Jews.'
Others ask: how can you stay in Hevron ? It is so dangerous. How can you risk the lives of your families and children in such a place?
It was May 2001, about eight months after the Oslo War — otherwise known as the second intifada — began. Daily, Hevron 's residents were attacked by terrorist gunmen from the surrounding hills transferred to the control of the Palestinian Authority several years earlier.
At 11 one night I was still in the office, five minutes from our home. Again, the sound of gunfire could be heard from the Abu Sneneh and Harat al-Shech hills The phone on my desk rang. It was one of my daughters, Aderet, then 16. Breathless, she exclaimed, 'Dad, they're shooting again.' I answered lackadaisically, 'Yeah, I hear it.' In other words, 'What's new — it's the same, every day.' 'But they shot into our apartment. And I was standing there,' my daughter cried. Arriving home, I discovered five holes in a wall opposite the window in the children's room. Aderet and Ruti had been standing not more than three feet from where the bullets hit. Miraculously, they weren't injured. Today, Aderet is married with two children of her own. And she too lives here in Hevron. Another of my married daughters, with three children, also continues to live in the city. Why not leave, due to the danger?
Jews in Hevron are willing to risk present dangers because acquiescence can only be defined as a reward for terrorism. Arab terror seeks to expel us from our homes, using murder as a means to an end. However, 'our homes' include not only those in Hevron but also in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa . New Palestinian textbooks contain maps of 'Palestine' that include the entire state of Israel .
Eviction from Hevron, the first Jewish city in Eretz Yisrael, would be tantamount to the removal of Americans from Boston or Philadelphia upon terrorist demands. Except, of course, that American history is less than 250 years old; Jewish history in Hevron is more than 3,700 years old.
Hevron, home of Abraham, is not just the place where Judaism got its start. It is the source of monotheism for all peoples of the world. Jewish people in and around the world support a strong, vibrant Jewish presence in Hevron . We do not expect any Israeli government to attempt to follow in the footsteps of Arab Nazi Mufti Amin el-Husseini and the British and expel Jews from the city. In any case, we would never abandon our homes.
Besides which, why should the state of be forced to chop off its roots to appease Arab terror? We know the result of eradicating the roots of a tree. God forbid that should happen!
Present Defense Minister and Former Prime Minister Barak once blessed Hevron as follows: 'The test of the renewed Hevron Jewish community, which is the same test of the Arab majority, is the ability to develop good neighborly relationships. Mutual honor and a joint effort are necessary to overcome the scars, the pain and the difficult reminders left from the despicable carnage which desecrated this holy city.'
Hevron 's Jewish Community could not agree more with this statement. The time has come for our Arab neighbors to stop shooting at us, to stop trying to kill us for no other reason than because we are Jews living in
Hevron . Perhaps they believe that by killing us, or by attempting to murder us, they will scare us away. They cannot be further from the truth, because
Hevron is the heart of the Jewish people, the life-blood from which the Jewish people derives its sanctity. This is a simple truth that everyone should not only understand, but also agree with. We truly hope and pray for the day when true peace will prevail, both in Hevron, throughout the land of Israel and all over the entire world.
Final note from our archives: 'On the occasion of the thirty second anniversary of the renewal of the Jewish Community of Hevron, I am happy to convey to the entire community blessings of success and shalom. The right of Jews to live tranquilly in the city of the Forefathers securely, protected from all danger, is not disputed.' So began Defense Minister and former Prime Minister Ehud Barak's letter of good wishes to The Jewish Community of Hebron on Jerusalem Day 1999.

Three different petitions to Israel’s Supreme Court, which had been joined together into one appeal over the years, came to an end on Monday. The appeals, which were filed by the Hevron (Arab) Municipality, the Hevron Development Committee, and several Arab citizens of Hevron, had demanded that the IDF be forced to remove all the restrictions it had been forced to impose on Arab movement in Hevron because of terror.
At the center of the appeals was a demand that Israel reopen King David Street, which Arabs call Shuhada Street (“Street of the Martyrs”), to Arab traffic.
The street was open to both Jews and Arabs until the beginning of the PA intifada in 2000. Hundreds of terrorist attacks took place in Hevron, and the IDF decided to limit PA access to the road as a safety measure.
The appeals fail to mention the fact that 97 percent of the city of Hevron is completely closed to Jews, while Arabs are free to roam the entire city except for a small three percent of it.
The court proceedings continued for seven long years, during which the IDF repeatedly tried to accommodate both the Court and the PA Arabs. Finally, Supreme Court President Justice Dorit Beinish was convinced and accepted the army’s position that easing the restrictions imposed on the Arabs would mean the continuation of murderous terror attacks. Beinish rejected the petition and accepted the IDF’s position that King David Street cannot be opened to Arab traffic.
The proceedings were accompanied by protests by Hevron’s Arab residents. In one such demonstration in February, rioters threw stones at soldiers and police officers. The demonstrators shouted “Hevron is Palestine” during the riot, and waved PLO flags. Others chanted, “Down with the occupation,” a reference to the Arab claim that the presence of Israeli Jews in the city constitutes illegal occupation.
It should be noted that throughout the court discussions, all involved - including the Arab petitioner - used the term King David Street rather than Shuhada Street.
Orit Strook, who heads the legal department of the Jewish community in Hevron, welcomed the court’s decision, saying that “the Supreme Court’s decision came at a symbolic time: on the eve of Shavuot, Feast of King David, and after seven years from the date of the filing of the petition – the same number of years as King David ruled in Hevron before moving to Jerusalem.”
Strook added, “This is definitely good news that even the Supreme Court has recognized the right of Jews to live safely in King David’s city, and that even the Arab lawyer properly used the Hebrew name of the street: King David Street. We hope that the free movement of Jews in Hevron will be expanded to many more streets, and that future movement restrictions will apply only to the attacking side and not to the side of the victim.”

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Trinidad Jiménez, visited Hevron Tuesday morning, in order to view a construction project in an Arab neighborhood that her country is partially underwriting.
The area lies between Kiryat Arba and Ma'arat Ha'Machpela (the Tomb of the Patriarchs) and is to house the families of terrorists.
Jiménez did not coordinate her visit to the so-called “Eastern Casbah” neighborhood with Israeli officials, a detail that raised the ire of the Jewish community. Jewish officials said the visit was not coordinated with Israel's Foreign Ministry.
When Kiryat Arba - Hevron officials got wind of the impending visit, however, they promptly fired off a protest letter to Jiménez, in which they said the construction was neither "humanitarian nor cultural," but rather aimed at creating “a hostile demographic buffer, with a potential for terrorism, which could erupt at any moment, at the heart of the tiny Jewish area, near the holy site - the Tomb of the Patriarchs."
Recalling Spain's expulsion of it's Jewish population 519 years ago, the letter chided Jiménez, saying “Spain is remembered in Jewish history as a country that brought about a great national disaster, betrayed its Jewish citizens and expelled them. A small number of those expelled reached Hevron, where they found refuge and built a Jewish community."
“Does the government of Spain intend to bring about yet another expulsion of Hevron's Jews – the City of the Patriarchs of the Jewish People?” the letter read.
Hevron spokesman David Wilder told Israel National News that community leaders, including Noam Arnon, held a brief meeting with Jiménez in Beit Hadassah.
“She said she was familiar with Jewish history and said she was only visiting to try to help so all can live here peacefully,” Wilder said.
“We are, of course, upset that she met with us for five minutes, and didn't visit the museum," Wilder said, adding that the Jews of Hevron would “appreciate a public declaration of support for the Jewish community.”
Wilder added, though, that “Jiménez did say specifically that the Spanish government does not support expelling Jews from their homes in Hevron.” Wilder added that “It's very unfortunate that Spain sees fit to participate in such activities and, and the same time – essentially, to ignore us.”

As the world is subjected to a hail of propaganda from Arabs regarding the 1948 “disaster” inflicted upon them by the creation of the state of Israel, Arab press watchdog MEMRI has released a video that places the Arab claims in perspective.
In the video, a 92-year-old Arab woman, originally from Hevron, glowingly recalls on Hamas-Gaza TV how the Arabs of Hevron, including her father, without provocation, massacred the peaceful Jewish neighbors they had lived beside for years in 1929 – almost 20 years before the 1948 War of Independence. Needless to say, there was no State of Israel then, no IDF, no "occupation" etc.
In an orgy of sadistic violence on August 24, 1929, 67 of Hevron's Jews were murdered. The Arabs murdered children in front of their parents, severed limbs, raped and burned people alive.
The British High Commissioner in the Land of Israel, Sir John Chancellor, published a statement following the massacre, saying:
I have learned with horror of the atrocious acts committed by bodies of ruthless and bloodthirsty evil-doers, of savage murders perpetrated upon defenseless members of the Jewish population regardless of age or sex, accompanied as at Hebron, by acts of unspeakable savagery, of the burning of farms and houses in town and country and of the looting and destruction of property.
These crimes have brought upon their authors the execration of all civilized peoples throughout the world.

Wednesday marks the tenth anniversary of the murder of Shalhevet Pass by Arab terrorists in Hevron, and in an interview with Hevron activist David Wilder, Shalhevet's father, Yitzchak Pass, says that although continuing to live just meters from where his baby was killed, he chose to deal with the pain of the tragedy “by living where it happened, to show that it won’t break us; to the contrary; it heightens our determination and increases our strength.”
Shalhevet Pass was murdered on March 26, 2001 (2 Nissan 5761), while seated in a stroller in a playground at the entrance to the Avraham Avinu neighborhood in Hevron, where she and her family lived. A terrorist Arab sniper opened fire with a high-powered rifle from the Abu Sneinah neighborhood on the hill opposite, and Shalhevet was killed instantly. The baby's mother grabbed her and ran with her, only to find that blood was running down her hands. One of the sniper's bullets penetrated the baby's head, passing through her skull, and hit her father Yitzchak, who had been pushing the stroller. He was seriously wounded minutes later by two bullets.
In the interview, Yitzchak Pass told of his family's difficult history. Some seven or eight years before Shalhevet's murder, his father-in-law, Avraham Zerbiv, a religious scribe (sofer), was attacked by terrorists wielding axes as he walked to morning prayers in the Machpela cave. He was only saved due to the medical attention and assistance he received from the late Dr. Baruch Goldstein. In addition, his younger brother, who today also lives in Hevron, was shot two weeks before Shalhevet’s terrible murder.
One reason he has chosen to remain in Hevron, says Pass, is because he realizes that “Shalhevet wasn’t our private possession, rather, essentially, someone who belonged to all Am Yisrael – the Jewish people. One of our first decisions was to write a Torah in her memory. This way, anyone who felt a part of this could be a partner, and many Jews helped us from all over the world, and thank G-d, that Torah, which her grandfather, my wife’s father wrote, is here in Hevron.”
He also hasn't hidden the murder of Shalhevet from his other children. “We tell them what happened, without hiding anything. I think that it’s important that children, as soon as they are able to comprehend, should understand the reality and know that Hevron isn’t like every other place in the world, that there are the complexities here. The children understand it, they live here and they know we’re not in Tel Aviv, that here there are soldiers and Arabs, that sometimes we get hit by rocks. Sometimes they feel the realities and complexities, but the bereavement is part of our life.”
Regardless of the past – or the future – Yitzchak Pass has no plans to flee Hevron, he said in the interview. “There is nothing, not murder, not Arabs, which can uproot us from here, because we are a stiff-necked people. Despite what the Jewish people have experienced, we have been able to hold our heads high. We have to understand how they lived in Galut where anyone could do whatever he wanted to Jews, and here, and here, in Eretz Yisrael, we hold our heads high, standing straight and tall, no one will ever get us out of here.”
Purim in Hebron 2011

Saar: No More Lies, We're Keeping Hevron
by Maayana Miskin
16 februari 2011, Adar 12, 5771
Israel must make it clear that Jews will remain in the city of Hevron, Education Minister Gidon Saar (Likud) said Tuesday. “We must not mislead the Arabs into thinking that one day there will be no Jews living in Kiryat Arba and Hevron,” he said during a tour of Judea.
A Jewish presence in the Biblical city is crucial “in order to maintain our ability to visit and pray in the Tomb of the Patriarchs, one of the most important places to the Jewish people,” Saar explained.
He said he would act to bring all Israeli students to visit Hevron, particularly the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Currently, all Israeli students are to visit Jerusalem at least once during their school career.
During his visit to Efrat, Hevron and other Israeli towns in Judea, the minister dedicated a children's science-ecology center in Efrat and a new school at the Herzog College of Har Etzion Yeshiva in Alon Shvut for intellectually gifted grade-school children living in the area. After enjoying the gifted youngsters' creativity exhibition and talents, Saar also faced tough questions over his party's policies.
Arutz Sheva's Hebrew-language news service asked Saar what he had to say to Jews in Judea who suffered under the Likud-led Judea and Samaria construction freeze. “We are in a very difficult and complex situation, diplomatically speaking,” Saar answered. “I am convinced that we know how to deal with the problems that stand before us regarding Jewish settlement.”
The first step Israel should take is to renew construction in majority-Jewish regions of Judea and Samaria, known as “settlement blocs,” Saar continued. “It's absurd that there are no land sales in the cities of Efrat, Ariel, Maaleh Adumim, and Beitar Illit, at a time when building is taking place in Jewish villages in Judea and Samaria,” he said.
Efrat has been waiting eight years for government approval to market 1,000 housing units. The Housing Ministry prepared the groundwork for the housing, spending tens of millions of shekels in the process, yet the government now refuses to give the project final authorization.
Saar was also asked to explain the difference between the Likud's platform and that of opposition party Kadima, whose party head, MK Tzipi Livni, visited Judea several weeks earlier. Livni also said during her visit that Israel should allow construction in settlement blocs.
“You would not want to be shown the difference between Likud and Kadima,” Saar warned. “Just the most recent documents revealed show that Kadima is willing to give up the very heart of Jerusalem.”
Recently published documents show that the Olmert administration had been prepared to give Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority, and to put the Old City and the Temple Mount under international control.

IDF Nets Five of Six Terrorists Released by PA
by Gil Ronen
Jan 7 '11, Shevat 2, 5771
Five of the six terrorists released from PA jail http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/141591 Thursday by Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas were recaptured by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during an overnight operation in Hevron. Principal among the Hevron-area Hamas members was Wael Bitar, suspected of involvement in the August 31 murder of four members of the Judean Jewish community of Beit Haggai.
He was also involved in a 2008 suicide bombing in Dimona in which one Israeli was killed and 10 were wounded. Bitar was arrested by the PA following a thwarted suicide attack that year, then released.
The IDF expressed regret for the death of a Hevron Arab in the house of one of the escapees and ordered an investigation of the shooting. The results are expected next week.
Lying about supposed IDF cruelty is an Arab weapon in the war against Israel. Earlier this week, claims that IDF tear gas caused the death of an Arab woman were found to be riddled with inconsistencies.

Rivlin: By Building in Hevron We’ll Preserve Jerusalem
by Elad Benari
December 2, 2010, Kislev 25, 5771
Knesset Speaker MK Reuven Rivlin took part on Wednesday in a Chanukah candle lighting ceremony in Hevron. The ceremony was attended by the commander of the Judea Brigade, soldiers, community leaders, and students of the yeshivot in the city.
During his speech, Rivlin said that Hevron is the place from which the right of the Jewish people to the land of Israel began, a right which he said is the challenge of the Jewish people even today.
“The kingdom of Israel began in Hevron and on Chanukah the kingdom returned to Israel,” said Rivlin. “Our right to the land was established in Hevron and it is a moral right over which there is no question. It was our right in those days, and it is our right during this time.”
Rivlin added that “Today it is clearer than ever that if we ignore our 3,800-year-old right, it will be difficult for us to protect our 62-year-old independence. If, G-d forbid, we stop believing that we are sitting in our own land based on a moral and just right; if, G-d forbid, we think we are here only because of force or because of favors by world countries – it is doubtful that we will be able to continue to hold our land. If, G-d forbid, we are tempted to think that we overtook a foreign land and that we own foreign property – in Hevron, Ariel, Maale Adumim, Gush Etzion and Jerusalem our capital – it is doubtful that we will be able to continue maintaining our country.”
He said that “Today we are celebrating the victory of faith over doubt. We are not trespassers, we are not robbers, and Hevron is not a currency. Our enemies cannot beat us. On Chanukah we raise the banner of Jewish independence. Hevron was, and remains, an unparalleled symbol of the Jewish foothold and independence in our country. By building Hevron - Jerusalem will also be built.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Rivlin lit the first Chanukah candle in the village of Elazar in Gush Etzion in the presence of the heads of the Yesha Council. Also participating in the ceremony were the chairs of the Knesset’s Land of Israel, MKs Aryeh Eldad and Zeev Elkin. The event was held as part of a Chanukah Candle Lighting Festival, sponsored by the Yesha Council, at sites throughout the Judea and Samaria area where important events in the history of Chanukah occurred. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/140941
MK Elkin said: “The best men in the country are today living in sites and places where the Maccabees fought thousands of years ago. The Judea and Samaria region has an ancient heritage, thanks to which the people of Israel returned to their land and built the country after thousands of years of exile.”
MK Eldad called on Israel’s government to continue construction in Judea and Samaria: “The people of Israel have the right to build and develop anywhere in the land of Israel and especially in places where our ancestors lived. We call on the Prime Minister to exercise this right of building and development in Judea and Samaria and resume construction in full swing.”
Ancient Hebron Site, Closed to Jews Since 1999, Greets Visitors
by Hillel Fendel
October 12, 2010, Cheshvan 4, 5771
As the public Torah weekly readings reach the story of the Patriarch Abraham, a rare Jewish visit was paid to Avraham's home in Elonei Mamre.
The site is mentioned three times in Genesis, in chapters 13,14, and 18. This is where Abraham settled after separating from his nephew Lot, where he built an altar to G-d, and where G-d sent him three angels to inform him that his son Isaac would be born the following year.
It was also here that Abraham established the first Hebrew army, for the purpose of rescuing Lot, who had been kidnapped by the Four Kings during their war against the Five Kings as described in Genesis.
Glass Junction: Permitted to Jews Only on Paper
The site is remembered by many old-timers from Hevron and nearby Kiryat Arba as situated very close to the Glass Junction, the old entrance to Hevron and Kiryat Arba along what was then the main Jerusalem-Hevron highway. The Hevron Agreement of 1999 stipulated clearly that Jews would be allowed to visit it, but in practice, after the Israel Defense Forces retreated from most of Hevron, Jews have hardly ever been allowed to do so.
Just a few days ago, a group of Jews did in fact visit the site. They found it to be preserved as before, though encompassed by several apartment buildings. The Jewish Community of Hevron hopes the ancient Jewish site will not only soon be opened to Jews, but will actually be returned to Jewish hands.
The Oaks of Mamre
During the Second Temple period, the site of Elonei Mamre was identified as just three kilometers north of the city of Hevron, and a similar distance from ancient Tel Hevron, today's Admot Yishai neighborhood of Hevron. Geographic historians explain that Abraham chose not to settle in the Hevron Valley, but rather on the hills north of the city, which were covered by oak forest; oak in Hebrew is "elon," giving the area its name. (Mamre was the name of a man whom the Bible mentions several times in Genesis as having lived in the area. The site's name means, literally, the "Oaks of Mamre".)
The name was carried down through the generations, losing only one letter in the Arabic name of a hill that towers above the Hevron valley: Jabel Namre, just west of the Machpelah Cave.
Herod's Wall
Today, Elonei Mamre is also one of Israel's most important archaeological sites. A two-meter-high, 70-by-30-meter wall has been found there, apparently built by King Herod 2,000 years ago. The wall's construction has similar characteristics to that in the Machpelah Cave [the Cave of the Patriarchs, ed.] and the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Remains of two towers from an earlier period have also been found in Elonei Mamre.
The early Christians built a large church there in the 4th century C.E., as part of their desire to reconnect with their Jewish roots – and especially with the Patriarch Abraham, who introduced monotheistic faith to the world. Jews and Gentiles would gather here on market days and argue about religion, and many coins have been found there. The church was destroyed in the Moslem conquest three centuries later. The Talmud refers to the site, known then as Botnah, as one of the three most important "fairs" (markets) in the Holy Land, though it notes that there were many idol worshipers there.

Arab Groups Claim Responsibility for Shooting Pregnant Woman
by Gil Ronen and Elad Benari
Sep 27 '10, Tishrei 19, 5771
A pregnant woman was wounded in the leg in on Sunday in a shooting attack on the car she was traveling in, south of Hevron. The victim, Netta Zucker, was taken to Be'er Sheva's Soroka Hospital in moderate condition, where doctors performed an emergency caesarean section and delivered her child, a baby boy. Both the mother and baby were said to be in good condition on Sunday night.
According to initial reports, terrorist gunmen ambushed two Israeli-licensed vehicles that were traveling near Tene-Omarim in southern Mount Hevron. They missed the first car but hit the second, wounding Zucker, who was in her ninth month of pregnancy. Sharon Zucker, the wounded woman's husband, who was behind the wheel and was also lightly wounded in the attack, kept driving the car until reaching an IDF checkpoint. He reported the incident to the soldiers at the checkpoint and continued driving for more than 15 miles until he reached Soroka Hospital.
Large forces of IDF soldiers and police were combing the area and searching for the perpetrators.
Fatah's military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, and the Al-Quds Squads of the Islamic Jihad later claimed joint responsibility for the attack, claiming in a statement that the attack was carried out to mark the 15th anniversary of the killing of Fatah founder Fat'hi Shkaki.
In response to the attack, the Judean Residents' Council said Sunday evening that Defense Minister Ehud Barak, "must start protecting Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria rather than devoting his time to [their] suppression."
The council's statement explained, "As the persecutions against the settlers increase, dealing in defense decreases. Ehud Barak: Do your duty and provide security or go home!"
The Komemiyut organization also responded to the attack in s statement which said: "In the face of the country's stuttering leaders, the Arab enemy continues to strike indiscriminately, while Defense Minister Barak deals with the suppression of Judea and Samaria residents and abandons the security of Jews. Jews have lost their lives on the whims of a man determined to continue to experience failures."
The statement continued: "A Minister of Defense who cannot stop a few hooligans rioting in the capital, brings disaster on Israel's deterrent force and thus allows our enemies to continue and try to hurt us."
This is the third shooting ambush in Judea and Samaria in less than one month. On August 30, just as US-sponsored “peace talks” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority were starting, terrorists murdered four people and one unborn baby at close range near Kiryat Arba. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/139426
Two days later terrorists fired at a vehicle near Rimonim in the Binyamin region. A husband and wife were wounded. One was in moderate to serious condition and the other in light condition. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/139451
Rock-throwing Arabs carried out numerous attacks on cars in different locations in the Hevron area Sunday afternoon. Other rock attacks took place in Gush Etzion and near Ofra. The attacks indicate that while local leaders conduct a 'peace' process, terrorists are stepping up their attacks on Jews.
Jewish Children Targeted in Hevron
by Maayana Miskin
September 24, 2010, Tishrei 16, 5771
Young Arab men have targeted Jewish children twice this week in the city of Hevron. One attacker repeatedly exposed himself to young Jewish girls. He was arrested on Thursday.
Earlier in the week, an eight-year-old Jewish boy was attacked by a gang of Arab men as he made his way to school. His attackers ran off and hid in a nearby Arab school.
Instead of turning the attackers out, teachers at the Arab school gave them shelter and prevented IDF soldiers or police from entering the building to search for them. The principal also barred security forces from entering.
Israeli police surrounded the building, but did not enter. Jewish residents of Hevron began to gather outside the gates of the school and held a spontaneous rally calling on police to enforce the law on Palestinian Authority Arab attackers as well as Israelis.
Police eventually brought about the attackers' surrender. The group walked out to a waiting police car, and were arrested and taken to a nearby station for questioning.
Terrorists Sought to Abduct Victims' Bodies
by Hillel Fendel
September 20, 2010, Tishrei 12, 5771
Two important facts about last month’s terrorist murder of four Israelis, including a husband and his pregnant wife, have come to light: The mastermind was recently released from Israeli prison, and the killers sought to kidnap the bodies.
Just three weeks ago, near Beit Haggai south of Hevron, Palestinian terrorists drove past an Israeli car carrying four Jews – and shot all of them to death. Yitzchak and Tali Imas were the parents of six children, and Tali was about to give birth; Kochi Even-Chaim, mother of one; and Avishai Shindler, married barely a year.
It has now been learned that the mastermind of the attack was Nasat Karmi of Hamas. Karmi was in prison for other terrorist crimes, and was recently released when his term was up. However, he soon afterwards became involved in terrorism once again – and was listed as the IDF’s number one wanted terrorist in the Hevron region.
In addition, the Egyptian Al-Ahram newspaper reported today that the murderers of the four planned to abduct the bodies, use them to demand the release of imprisoned terrorists, sabotage the peace talks, and bring about the resignation of Mahmoud Abbas and the collapse of the Palestinian Authority.
A car that happened to pass by just after the quadruple murder thwarted the grandiose Hamas plans.
Al-Ahram reported that this information originated from the terrorists themselves, during their interrogation by PA security forces. The murderers said they expected that the abduction would lead Israel to withdraw from the talks and the IDF to enter local Arab villages en-masse and search for the kidnappers. This would then cause Abbas (Abu Mazen) to resign.
Bereaved Father: Prison for Terrorists is Like a Country Club
In light of the news that the mastermind had been freed from Israeli prison, Arutz-7’s Shimon Cohen spoke to Tzion Swiri, who lost his son, daughter and son-in-law in a drive-by terror attack nine years ago. It is known that the mastermind of that attack, Marwan Barghouti, is high on the list of candidates for release in a deal for captive soldier Gilad Shalit.
“I can only hope that Marwan Barghouti and the other six who were involved in murdering my children will remain in prison until they die,” Swiri said. “My feeling at present, given the news regarding the recent attack, that ‘we told you so.’ We’ve been railing about this for years: Terrorists must not be released as goodwill gestures or in exchange deals; they must remain in jail.”
Cohen reminded him that in the case of Nasat Karmi of Hamas, “his term in jail came to an end; there was nothing to do but release him.” Swiri said, “That brings me to our other complaint. If jail was really jail for these terrorists, they would not want to return. But we give them everything they want, including a university education – so why should they not want to commit more terrorism? At worst, they know they’ll return to the country club we call jail…”
It has even reached the point, Swiri said, “where the mother of a terrorist who was about to be released from prison pleaded to let her son remain in jail a little longer so that he could complete his education without paying. What have we come to?!”
There are various options by which to pressure the terrorists, Swiri said, “and not just a closure on Gaza. Prison conditions should be worsened for them… We should kidnap some of the top terrorists or their children, and then exchange a child for a child.”
Swiri blames the media for exerting pressure for a prisoner release “without thinking of what will happen the day after. They have not been the targets of terrorism, and that’s why they allow themselves to take that position. I asked some of them how would they respond if their own son would be murdered in the next attack; they had nothing to say, except that that I shouldn’t speak that way…”
Gruwelijke moordpartij nabij Hebron in Judea

Schertsonderhandelingen in Washington
Israel Prepares for Holiday Season, Remembers Tragedies of Past
Yom Kippur War Marks 37th Anniversary of War
6 september 2010, The Israel Project Jews in Israel and around the world are preparing for the upcoming High Holy days, which begin Wednesday night (Sept. 8) with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah and culminate at the beginning of October. In Israel, it is a time for celebration but also a time to reflect on attacks that terrorists have carried out in the past to coincide with the holidays.
Jewish High Holy Days:
Rosh Hashanah, evening of Sept. 8th, 2010 (Wednesday) to Sept. 10th, 2010 (Friday);
Yom Kippur, evening of Sept. 17th, 2010 (Friday) to Sept. 18th, 2010 (Saturday);
Sukkoth, evening of Sept. 22nd, 2010 (Wednesday) to Sept. 29th, 2010 (Wednesday);
Shemini Atzeret (also Simhat Torah in Israel), Sept. 30th, 2010 (Thursday);
Simhat Torah (outside of Israel), Oct. 1st, 2010 (Friday).[1]
Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar and is celebrated with long blasts of the shofar (ram's horn) in synagogues as well as family gatherings. Businesses are closed in Israel.
While holidays are a joyful occasion, Israel also recalls previous terrorist attacks that occurred during festivals and must maintain security measures to defend itself.
Terror and Jewish Holidays:
Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. Jews fast for 25 hours and spend much of the day praying. In Israel, Yom Kippur is a national holiday and many activities are suspended, including TV and radio broadcasts and public transportation. Some roads are closed, as are entertainment venues.[2]
On Yom Kippur in 1973, Israel was attacked[4] by surrounding Arab armies as many Israelis were in synagogues fasting and praying;
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
On March 4, 1996, during Purim, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up outside the busy Dizengoff Center shopping mall in Tel Aviv. Thirteen people were killed and many were injured. Many of the victims were children dressed up to celebrate the spring festivities. [5]
On March 27, 2002 22 people were killed and 140 injured - 20 seriously - in a suicide bombing at the Park Hotel in the coastal city of Netanya, in the midst of the Passover holiday seder with 250 guests;[6]
On April 17, 2006, during Passover, nine people were killed and at least 40 wounded in a suicide bombing near the old central bus station in Tel Aviv. The blast ripped through Falafel Rosh Ha'ir, the same restaurant that was hit by an attack on January 19.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sukkoth, also known as the harvest festival, comes five days after Yom Kippur and lasts for a week. Booths are erected all around Israel to symbolize the tents that Jews lived in after their exodus from Egypt. Schools are typically closed and most Israelis take advantage of the break for leisure activities.
In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah are combined into one holiday and are observed when Sukkoth ends. It is a joyous time during which Jews recite the final and beginning chapters of the Torah (bible) as they renew its yearly reading cycle.[3]
On Sept. 23, 2002, a man was killed and his three sons were injured by Palestinian gunmen while they were celebrating the Sukkoth festival near Hebron;[7]
On Sept. 26, 2003, a 27-year-old man and a 7-month old infant were shot dead by a Palestinian terrorist who knocked on the door of a home in Negohot, south of Hebron, during a celebratory Rosh Hashanah dinner;

Second Terror Attack on Highway 60, two Jews Shot
by Chana Ya'ar and Elad Benari
Sep 2 '10, Elul 23, 5770
2nd Terror Attack Near JerusalemPalestinian Authority terrorist groups are scrambling to claim credit for a second attack that left a Jewish man and woman, both in their 30s, wounded on a road north of Jerusalem late Wednesday night.
Rabbi Moshe and Shira Moreno, residents of the Jordan Rift Valley, were treated on the scene by Magen David Adom medics before being rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem. Moreno was moderately wounded, and suffered leg injuries; his wife sustained lighter wounds as a result of the vehicle overturning.
Terrorists peppered their car with bullets in a drive-by shooting on Route 60 between the Rimonim Junction and the Jewish community of Kochav HaShachar in the Binyamin region of Samaria, just about 15 minutes north of the capital, at about 11:00 p.m. The vehicle overturned, tumbled down an incline and landed in a ditch.
Rabbi Moreno, who teaches at the Maale Efraim pre-military academy, is the brother of the late Lt.-Col. Emanuel Moreno, who fell in battle during the 2006 Lebanon War while serving in one of the IDF’s most elite units, Sayeret Matkal, on a mission near B’albek. The details of that mission were so secret that due to the constraints of national security, to this day a photo of the deceased has not been published as is customary when a soldier falls in battle. Emanuel Moreno was survived by his wife, Maya and three children. All four of his brothers, including Moshe, served in elite IDF units.
Fatah Renegades, Hamas Compete for Credit
A Fatah cell calling itself the Al-Namir cells of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack in a call late Wednesday night to the offices of WorldNetDaily. The group issued a statement promising the attack was “part of a series of more attacks to come.”
According to journalist Aaron Klein, highly placed sources in both Fatah and its affiliate group, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Al-Namir is a renegade Fatah group that opposes the opening of talks with Israel.
The sources denied the group was coordinating its movements with the political leadership of Fatah and the PA, adding that it had planned and carried out Wednesday night’s attack with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terror group.
By Thursday morning, Hamas had also claimed responsibility for the attack.
Netanyahu: 'Peace Begins with Leaders'
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is currently in Washington, was updated on the terror attack as he was making his way from the White House back to his hotel.
Both Netanyahu and PA President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack. Speaking during a special dinner in Washington to mark the end of the Ramadan fast day, Abbas said: "We do not want bloodshed on the Israeli side. We want the two peoples to live an ordinary life with real peace."
Netanyahu also condemned the attack and said to Abbas: "You are my partner for peace. Peace begins with leaders."
This attack comes just over 24 hours after Tuesday's terror attack near Kiryat Arba, in which four people were killed, including parents of six children.
MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) responded to Wednesday's attack and said: "Netanyahu is behaving like a UFO and not like a Prime Minister. The country is burning, the roads have become terror stricken, and Netanyahu is playing games in the United States. Netanyahu speaks of peace but brings terrorism upon us."
MK Prof. Aryeh Eldad (National Union) blamed Defense Minister Ehud Barak for the attack: "The Defense Minister is responsible for the safety of the residents, and despite our repeated warnings he decided to abandon the lives of Jews and remove the checkpoints.
"This lawlessness is what allows murderers to move freely and we will claim their blood from Ehud Barak," added Eldad. "The Defense Minister should resign or be fired since he has proven to be a complete failure and that he exercises bad judgment."
Nachi Eyal, General Manager of the Legal Forum for the Land of Israel, said in response to the terror attack that the barriers in the region should be returned.
"We've warned in the past and even appealed to the High Court against dismantling the checkpoint in the area," said Eyal. "The political echelon, the IDF commanders, and the High Court justices refused to adhere to our request and now it turns out that we were right. Are more deaths and injuries required in order to understand that the checkpoint must be returned?"
Shooting victims buried
by Maayana Miskin
Published: 09/01/10, 5:48 PM / Last Update: 09/01/10
The victims of the Tuesday night terrorist attack near Hevron – Yitzchak Imas, his wife Talia Imas, Kokhava Even-Chaim, and Avishai Shindler – were buried Wednesday. The funeral procession began in Beit Chagai. As the town does not have its own cemetery, the burials were conducted in various cities around Israel.
Yitzchak and Talia Imas, parents of six children, were buried in the Mount of Olives (Har Hazeitim) cemetery in Jerusalem.
Their daughter Rut eulogized them, saying, “For 19 years you raised me... G-d, thank you for giving me wonderful parents.” She recalled their 25th wedding anniversary just two weeks earlier, “You promised you would reach your golden anniversary as well.”
“Mother, I promise to look over our family, to keep doing the things that were important to you, and to keep the family together,” she added. “I'll be there for the little ones, who will grow up with no mother or father.”
Kokhava Even-Chaim was buried in Ashdod. Her husband Momi spoke at her funeral. “I can't believe that I'm reading a goodbye letter to you, my wife, my beloved,
the mother of our family. I've been to so many funerals, I want you to stay here with us.”
He spoke of the terrorists who murdered Kokhava and three others, saying, “Evil cowards, who harm innocent civilians... Only wicked people could call that war.”
Speaking to his wife, he said, “We are not the ones accompanying you. You are accompanied by the angels you created by the learning of a daily page of Gemara, by saying Tehillim [Psalms] - just in the past two weeks you finished the book of Psalms 22 times – and by the angels you created by guarding your speech. Few people know that you led a group of women committed to avoiding speaking ill of others.”
Ten-year-old Hodaya, Kokhava's daughter, spoke at the funeral as well. “You always took care of me. When something happened to me, you would leave everything and come. You taught me to be righteous. I want you to come back to me.”
Avishai's uncle spoke at his funeral in Petach Tikva, “G-d wanted you close to Him, closer than any of us. We also wanted you close, but the one true Judge had different plans.” He recalled his nephew's kindness, calm disposition and humility.
Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin joined the mourners in Beit Chagai. “Terrorists see no 'green line,'” he said, referring to the 1949 armistice line which devides Judea and Samaria from the rest of Israel.
“Now, while our dead still lie before us, is not the time for national soul-searching,” he continued. “All I will say to you, Yitzchak, Talia, Kokhi and Avishai, is that you shall find comfort in the building of Jerusalem and of the land of Israel.”
Education Minister Gidon Saar spoke as well. “The tears we shed today are not only in our eyes; the heart weeps as well. The entire nation mourns, there is great pain over the tragedy that occurred last night. What cruelty, what murderous inhumanity, that turns on innocent civilians, on the mothers and fathers of children, including Kokhava – may G-d avenge her blood – who leaves behind a husband, a daughter and parents.”

Series of Miracles Saves Terror Attack Target
by Hillel Fendel
September 2, 2010, Elul 23, 5770
Rabbi Moshe Moreno, who was shot Wednesday night in the second Palestinian terrorist roadside attack in as many nights, says he is only now realizing the magnitude of the miracles that befell him.
From his hospital bed in Hadassah Hospital where the bullet wound to his leg is being treated, he spoke with Arutz-7’s Uzi Baruch on Thursday morning and said, “I’m not sure if I’m 37 years old – or one day old, after what happened to me last night. So I figure I’m somewhere in between, a youth of about 18 and a half… Only now that I am out of it, I can recount about ten miracles that happened to us in the space of about five minutes, with praise and thanks to G-d.”
Rabbi Moreno teaches at the pre-military yeshiva academy in Maaleh Ephraim, on the western edge of the Jordan Valley. He is the younger brother of one of the most famous casualties of the 2nd Lebanon War of 2006, Lt.-Col. Emanuel Moreno, who was known for his leadership skills, bravery, all-around soldiering, spirituality, and meticulous adherence to religious values.
“My wife and I were traveling back from Jerusalem to Maaleh Ephraim," Rabbi Moreno recounted. "We passed by the trempiada [where Yesha residents wait for rides] at French Hill, where we often pick people up and drop them off at Kokhav HaShachar [about two miles out of the way – ed.]. Luckily, as it turned out, there was no one there, nor at the next “stop,” at Hizme. After the turnoff to Rimonim, a car 'settled' in back of me with his brights on; I tried to signal him in various ways to lower them, or to pass me, but he kept on playing with me, until I finally just gave up. But I didn’t suspect anything."
“Suddenly, around the curve between Rimonim and Kokhav HaShachar, he overtook me and began firing at me, from point-blank range essentially. It was an unbelievable miracle that he did not hit us, except for one bullet in my leg; my wife was not hit at all. The police told me later that there were nine bullet holes in my door, and only one hit me. What are the chances that a man standing next to you as he passes by you in a car and firing a Kalachnikov rifle in automatic will not hit you – one in a billion? One in two billion? … An amazing miracle. But there has to be some accounting as to who gave them these guns [towards the beginning of the Oslo process].
“I veered the car towards the right, and G-d enabled me to regain control: I opened the door, got my wife and myself out of our seat belts and out of the car and we rolled ourselves down and away from the road. Another miracle is that my wife just ‘happened’ to be holding her cell phone in her hand, and also that it was a Pelephone and not Orange [cellular companies in Israel]; just 2-3 months ago we switched it, as there is no reception for Orange in that area. We found ourselves behind a big boulder, and I phoned a friend of mine in the area to call the army… I panicked for a moment and started to yell, but another miracle was that the terrorists or other Arabs were not there to hear me… This was a series of miracles that only now am I beginning to grasp.”
Rabbi Moreno made his own personal accounting as well: “I am not sure in what merit G-d chose to save my life. I have a few ideas: It could be some form of merits of my forefathers, or perhaps because at that very minute, my mother was reciting Psalms for two hours straight… Or it could be because of a special kindness that I did for someone in our town just the day before… I’m not sure, but the bottom line is that I have received my life anew, as a gift.”
In related news, the car from which the fatal shots were fired at the Beit Haggai victims on Tuesday evening was found by the Palestinian Authority security forces… Gershon Mesika, head of the Shomron Regional Council, has called on his fellow regional council heads to boycott the Rosh HaShanah toast called by Defense Minister Ehud Barak. “Jews are murdered as a result of his policies, and he goes out to celebrate,” Mesika said.
Terrorist Attack Kills Four Israelis but Will Not Derail Peace Talks
1 september 2010, Elul 22, 5770
A terrorist attack that killed four Israeli civilians including a pregnant woman on Tuesday (Aug. 31) will not sabotage this week’s direct peace negotiations in Washington, Israeli Embassy spokesman Jonathan Peled said.
In a telephone conference call for The Israel Project, Peled said the attack near the West Bank city of Kiryat Arba was deliberately intended to sabotage the talks, which will convene at the U.S. State Department on Thursday after a 20-month delay.
“It (the attack) impacts, but it shouldn’t derail the talks that are coming to fruition this week,” Peled said. “This terror act is a clear sign of the imperative need for us to ensure that if Israel’s security needs are not addressed, it’s going to be very, very difficult to begin making concessions in the West Bank.”
“The timing of this is deliberate to try and derail the Palestinians and all those who seek peace in the region from coming and sitting down at the table with Israel,” he said.
Hamas spokesman in Gaza, Sami Abu Zuhri, congratulated the attackers saying the attack was a normal reaction to what he called "the crime of occupation." Hamas, which controls Gaza, opposes direct talks and the continued existence of Israel.
The attack appeared to be carefully planned. The gunmen opened fire on the car at short range, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullet holes and killing all its occupants. Israeli security forces launched a hunt for the perpetrators.
Peled said Iran and its Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah proxies were intent on sabotaging the peace process but Israel was ready, on coming to the table, to make “painful concessions” for a secure peace. He said 70 percent of the Israeli public supported such concessions, including withdrawing from parts of the West Bank so that a Palestinian state could be established.
The attack took place shortly before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington. He and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will meet separately at the White House with President Barack Obama on Wednesday before Thursday’s direct talks.
Peled said the main goal of the meeting, which Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan’s King Abdullah also will attend, is to set up a timetable for further face-to-face negotiations in the region.

Jews, Arabs Work Together to Save Hevron's Olive Trees
by Maayana Miskin
July 12, 2010, Av 1, 5770
Jews, Arabs Save Trees in HevronResidents of the Hevron area are concluding a weeks-long battle to save ancient olive trees next to the city. The project brought together Jews and Arabs from Hevron.
The ancient trees of Tel Hevron – some of them up to 2,000 years old – were endangered by a parasitic plant known as divkon hazayit. The plant was first discovered growing on the trees last year, and quickly multiplied, threatening to devastate the area.
The danger was spotted by Noam Arnon, spokesman for Hevron's Jewish community, who noticed the invasive species taking root while hiking through the area. He contacted the Ministry of Agriculture and the IDF Civil Administration to warn them.
Ministry of Agriculture workers were sent to the region and confirmed that without treatment, many trees could die. They created a plan of action to save the trees.
Over the course of several weeks, volunteers from both the Jewish and Arab communities of Hevron went from tree to tree and pruned off the invasive species. Olive tree branches found to be infected were cut off and burnt.
Some trees were so badly infected that they were cut down completely, leaving only a stump. However, olive trees are known for their ability to regrow, and experts say even those trees left with no branches at all will eventually flourish.
While the media often prefers to focus on Jewish-Arab tensions in Hevron, there is not insignificant Jewish-Arab cooperation in the city as well. In 2005, Arabs and Jews united in order to expel extreme-left foreign activists from the city. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/93549 In 2008 an Arab sheikh prevented left-wing anarchists from destroying the Hazon David synagogue; Arab and Jewish leaders later sat down together in an attempt to create friendly Muslim-Jewish ties. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/125215
In April, local Jews and Arabs worked together to restore an archaeological site in Tel Hevron. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/136955
Reactions to Attacks: "Removing Checkpoints Brings Terrorism"
by Hillel Fendel
June 14, 2010, Tammuz 2, 5770
'Checkpoint Removal = Terrorism'The two terror attacks of last night and this morning have brought on a wave of reactions, most blaming the government for having removed security checkpoints.
One policemen has died - one is listed as seriously wounded - after being shot south of Hevron last night, and a physically handicapped man was thrown from his car and treated in a hospital in the Shomron (Samaria). The terrorists in both incidents are assumed to have traveled unhindered through recently-removed checkpoints.
The Land of Israel Knesset lobby, headed by MKs Ze’ev Elkin and Aryeh Eldad, released this statement: “Our lobby warned that the easing of restrictions for the Palestinians would lead to increased terrorism. The lobby calls once again to refrain from making gestures that harm security. We will act to have a Knesset debate and decision that will place the preservation of life and security for Israelis above the demand for gestures to the PA residents and improvements in their ‘fabric of life.’”
The town of Otniel, in the South Mt. Hevron region where the shooting attack took place, released this statement: “Those who opened, just less than a month ago, the Dahariya checkpoint, with the knowledge that the place would become a refuge for murderers, cannot now lift his eyes heavenward and say, “Our hands did not spill this blood.’ [a Biblical term, ed.] Just a few years ago on this very route there were several attacks, but once the Dahariya route was blocked, we saw a drastic drop in such attacks. Once again, we see that ‘goodwill gestures’ to the Palestinian Authority cost us in blood.”
MK Michael Ben-Ari (National Union): “The handwriting had been written on the wall in blood. Opening the checkpoints and crossings encourages terrorism and gives terrorists a free hand.”
MK Uri Ariel (National Union): “As we warned, opening the security checkpoints leads to terrorist attacks. Our security policy has to change to become one that puts the citizens’ safety in the center.”
Women in Green/Judea Action Committees: “Every cave-in brings terrorism: When we left Gaza, we got Hamas. When we fight terrorists with paintball guns, the world arises against us… When we take away checkpoints, the Arabs benefit and the Jews pay with their lives, when we forbid Jews to build and expand, the Arabs take over the land, and when we abandon the Adurayim Base in South Mt. Hevron, the Arabs understand that the way is clear to get rid of the Jews… We call to return to a strong stand for our natural rights to the Land of Israel, and to start acting like a sovereign in his own land. The government and the man at its helm must draw strength from the People of Israel, which exhibits strength and patriotism.”
Tzviki Bar-Chai, Chairman of the South Mt. Hevron Regional Council: “The three policemen who were wounded in the attack this morning are victims of [Defense Minister Ehud] Barak and Bibi [Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu]’s policies of removing checkpoints. It’s time for our political leadership to understand what everyone has already understood long ago, and that is that good-will gestures and removing checkpoints simply increase terrorism and destabilize our security.”
Police Officer Killed in Morning Terrorist Attack
by Maayana Miskin
June 14, 2010, Tammuz 2, 5770
Officer Killed in Terror AttackDoctors at the receiving hospital have reported [11:45 AM] that one of the police officers who was seriously wounded in a terrorist ambush early on Monday morning has died of his wounds. Another of the police officers is seriously wounded and a third suffered light wounds.
The slain officer has been identified as Yehoshua "Shuki" Sofer of Be'er Sheva. Sofer, 39, had served in the Hevron region for 14 years. His funeral will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Be'er Sheva cemetery.
The victims were taken to Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva and Hadassah Ein Karem in Jerusalem. The attack was directed against a police vehicle on Monday morning along Route 60, south of Hevron.
Residents of the area noted that the IDF had removed a major checkpoint in the area just three weeks earlier. The checkpoint, the Dahariya crossing, was located roughly three kilometers from the site of attack.
Another Attack Near Removed Crossing
On Sunday night, a resident of the Samaria town of Alei Zahav was ambushed and brutally attacked by PA Arabs while driving near the town of Nachal Shilo.
The victim, who is physically handicapped, noticed a car with police lights signaling him to stop. When he pulled over, PA Arab men dragged him from his car, beat him, and stole his vehicle, leaving him at the side of the road. The victim was taken to a hospital in light condition.
Members of the Samaria Regional Council noted that in order to reach the site of the attack, the attackers had passed by what used to be an IDF checkpoint. The checkpoint was recently removed as a gesture to the PA.
On Friday, a Palestinian Authority terrorist rammed into two Border Police officers with his car in the Wadi Joz neighborhood of Jerusalem. Both officers suffered light wounds. The driver was shot and killed by other officers as he attempted to escape. Police spokesmen said officers had attempted to stop him by firing in the air, but began aiming directly at him when he ignored their warnings.
His family managed to steal his body from the hospital, and apparently planned to bury it near the Al-Aksa mosque on the Temple Mount.
Also on Friday, a woman and her three children were ambushed by a rock-throwing mob in the same area; she slammed on the gas and escaped, after being hit in the head by one of the rocks. She received stitches in Hadassah Hospital.
Response to Terror Attack: Jews Return to Abandoned IDF Base
by Hillel Fendel and Yoni Kempinski
June 15, 2010, Tammuz 3, 5770
The classic Zionist response to a terrorist attack has been implemented once again, in the abandoned Adurayim army base south of Hevron.
Just hours after Monday morning's murderous terrorist shooting in which policeman Yehoshua Sofer of Be'er Sheva was killed http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/138047 and three other policemen were wounded, dozens of Jews from Gush Etzion, Kiryat Arba/Hevron, the South Mt. Hevron communities and Meitar gathered in Adorayim, a base abandoned by the IDF just two months ago.
The initiative was organized by the Judea Action Committees, Women for Israel's Tomorrow (Women in Green), and the Committee for a Jewish Shdema.
The Adorayim army base is located in the southern Hevron Hills, between Beit Haggai and Otniel, a few hundred meters from the fatal shooting.
The activists who gathered there said they were determined to restore a Jewish presence in Adurayim, just as they did in Shdema, which was similarly abandoned several years ago and now features a permanent Jewish presence. They said their motto is: "Instead of withdrawal, settlement!"
The pioneering activists held afternoon Mincha prayers at what used to be the base's synagogue but was destroyed by the Arabs following the IDF's departure. Leaders of the effort said they would return on Friday to begin cleaning and rebuilding the site, with the goal of restoring its permanent Jewish presence, and they called upon the public to join them.
The activists called upon Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to "draw strength from the People of Israel, who have shown high morals, strength of character, determination and patriotism."

Welcome to Mitzpe Shalhevet, in the old jewish headquarter of Hebron
In April 2001, Shalhevet Pass, a little girl of ten months old, was murdered by a Sniper - a Arab sniper. In respons, Jewish families came in and reëstablished the Jewish presence in the market buildings, which were renamed 'Mitzpe Shalvhevet'. The community consolidated itself steadly until the Arabs - the heirs of those who had slaughtered the Jews of Hebron in 1929 - petitioned the Israel High Court of Justice to expel the Jews from Hebron.
The structure known as the 'whole sale market' is part of the ancient Jewish quarters of Hebron and was aquired by the Jewish community centuries ago. In this place the Jewish community led full Jewish lives. The quarter had a residence, synagoges and more.

Monument Shalhevet
In the 1929-riots 67 jews were murdered, dozens more injured and the survivors were invicted.

Internationaal rumoer over Israëls heilige plaatsen
17-03-2010
Bron: F.t.H.
Machpela in Hebron

IDF Foils Stabbing Attack in Hevron
by David Lev
(IsraelNN.com)
This was the fourth terrorist stabbing attack against soldiers in a week. One of the attacks was unfortunately successful – the one that took the life of IDF officer Ihad Hatib at Tapuach Junction last Wednesday.
IDF troops foiled a stabbing attack by a terrorist in Hevron late Friday, shooting an Arab who rushed at soldiers brandishing a large knife.
The attack came as soldiers of the Shimshon brigade patrolled near a large mosque in the city. The soldiers noticed an Arab brandishing a knife, screaming anti-Israel epithets, and running in the direction of the troops. The soldiers called on him to stop, but the terrorist refused to do so – and soldiers opened fire on him before he was able to carry out his attack, seriously injuring him. Local medics took the terrorist to a hospital in the city, where he died from his wounds.
This was the fourth terrorist stabbing attack against soldiers in a week. One of the attacks was unfortunately successful – the one that took the life of IDF officer Ihad Hatib at Tapuach Junction last Wednesday.
After the incident, Arabs began rioting, throwing stones at soldiers and Jewish residents of the city. Troops broke up the riot.
Yet another terrorist apparently on his way to a stabbing attack was nabbed Saturday night – this one at the Hawara checkpoint south of Shechem. The terrorist was found carrying a knife 36 centimeters (over one foot) long. Rioting Arabs also threw rocks at an Israeli bus traveling nearby Saturday night. No one was hurt, but the vehicle was damaged.
'Jewish Hebron is not expendable!'
Pesach in Hebron, 5770 - 2010
Over 30,000 people visit Hebron on Wednesday and Thursday of Chol HaMoed Pesach
The massive turnout of people to Hebron in the past few days is more than encouraging. It is a specific sign pointing to the healthy state of of the Jewish people in Eretz Yisrael, in the State of Israel. There would be those who would seek our expulsion from our homes in the first Jewish city in Israel. However, this is a small minority. An overwhelming majority of Jews in Israel understand the importance and significance of Hebron and Ma'arat HaMachpela to Jewish culture and tradition. Ma'arat HaMachpela did not need 'approval' as a site of national heritage, being that this place is the very roots of all Jewish heritage in Israel. But it is heartwarming to again witness the tremendous love of Am Yisrael to Hebron and Hebron's Jewish community. These events spoke loudly and clearly to all Israel and the entire world:Hebron, Meaz u'leTamid - Hebron, past, present and forever.
We call on people from Israel and around the world to to continue visiting Hebron this summer, ensuring that it will never be forgotten: Jewish Hebron is not expendable!
