550 Shalit Deal Terrorists to be Freed Sunday

The second group of 550 Palestinian Authority Arab terrorists due to be freed in the second phase of the deal that led to the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit are scheduled for release today (Sunday).
On Thursday, the soon-to-be freed terrorists were interviewed and checked by doctors. This morning they are to be released to Palestinian Authority-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria via the Beitunia checkpoint, or to Gaza.
Among the group, none of whom are members of Hamas and which the government has in the past insisted does not include any with "blood on their hands," are 43 security prisoners -- who according to the Almagor Terror Victims' Association do indeed meet that criteria.

Appeals against the release of this second group until their records can be examined more meticulously are set to be filed Sunday in the Supreme Court by the family members of those they have harmed.
The Shurat HaDin legal rights group has already filed its petition with the Supreme Court, requesting a delay in the release of the group, which comprises the other half of the 1,027 terrorists who are to be freed in the deal.
There was time enough "to conduct this arrangement in a democratic manner and not keep information hidden," the group said in its petition, filed by attorney Nitzana Darshan-Leitner. "In a proper democracy citizens have the right to bring their concerns to the authorities in order to affect the decision."
The names of the terrorists to be released were made public last week on Wednesday, barely allowing time for attorneys and families to prepare petitions and file objections, let alone be heard in court.
Several of the terrorists being released were involved in the killing of wounding of U.S. citizens during a 2002 terrorist attack on King George Street in Jerusalem.
Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas-allied terrorists in a raid near the Kerem Shalom Crossing across the border from Gaza on June 25, 2006. During the attack, another IDF soldier was killed and several others were badly wounded, as Gilad Shalit was dragged away into a smugglers' tunnel dug near the border especially for the purpose.

Het zal u niet ontgaan zijn dat de Israelische militair Gilad Shalit op 18 oktober 2011 is vrijgelaten. De terreurbeweging Hamas liet Shalit na vijf jaar vrij in ruil voor de vrijlating van in totaal 1027 terroristen waaronder diverse figuren die de dood van onschuldige Israelische burgers op hun geweten hebben. In eerste instantie zijn er 477 vrijgelaten waaronder 27 vrouwen, de rest volgt later dit jaar. Shalit zag er bijzonder slecht uit. Bleek, vermagerd, depressief en ernstig verzwakt kortom: totaal op en uitgeblust. Zijn vader vertelde dat er geweld tegen hem is gebruikt en details daarover later bekend te zullen maken. Gaza en Ram-allah vierden feest over de terugkeer van de terroristen, die het vermoorden van onschuldige Israelische burgers, waaronder talloze kinderen, als een ultieme vorm van gelukzaligheid beschouwen en als het hoogst haalbare in hun leven. Men is in deze streken niet anders gewend. Eén land maakt daarop een uitzondering en dat is Israel.
Gilad Shalit tijdens zijn gevangenschap in Gaza
Het gaat om een cultuur die is doordrenkt van haat, racisme en moordzucht. Het gaat deze terroristen –door Dries van Agt vrijheidsstrijders genoemd- maar om één ding: oorlog en terreur tot de staat Israel vernietigd is en alle Joden zijn gedood. Om dit bereiken wordt geen enkel middel geschuwd. Hamas roept met regelmaat op dat de Joodse staat van de kaart moet worden geveegd, en dat alle Joden dienen te worden uitgeroeid. Zo hield een parlementslid van Hamas op 11 mei 2011 op Hamas-TV een toespraak met als titel: "Palestijnen komt de eer toe om de Joden uit te roeien."

De leiders van Hamas doen in het Engels wel eens gematigde uitspraken om zo de naïeve westerlingen een rad voor ogen te draaien en anti-Semieten van argumenten te voorzien. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat allerlei anti-Israël lobbyisten deze radicaalislamitische terreurbeweging als een heel redelijke club beschouwen met heel redelijke mensen aan het roer. Een van de leiders vanHamas, Mahmoud Al-Zahar, nam op 21 juli 2011 deel aan een discussie op de Egyptische satellietzender Dream 1 TV waarin hij de verwerping van het bestaansrecht van Israel verdedigde. http://brabosh.com/2011/08/07/pqpct-ce9/ Volgens Memri, gebruikte al-Zahar het interview om zijn argument te verbreiden dat “Palestina in zijn geheel Islamitisch waqfland is, dat niet kan worden opgegeven. Als onze generatie dat niet kan bereiken, dan zal de volgende dat doen en wij voeden onze kinderen op met dit doel. Met Palestina bedoelen we Palestina in zijn geheel en in ons midden is er geen plaats voor Israel.” Dat is ook de mening van de Arabische Liga.

Rechts Hamas terrorist Mahmoud al Zahar
Vele Israëlische gezinnen hebben de vrijlating van Gilad Shalit met een mix van vreugde en droefheid ontvangen. Vreugde omdat de jongeman na vijf jaar gevangenschap veilig naar huis is teruggekeerd. Droefheid omdat in ruil voor deze vrijlating diverse ruim terroristen zijn vrijgelaten met bloed aan hun handen.
Als onderdeel van de ruil, heeft Israël onder meer Ahlam Tamimi vrijgelaten, de vrouwelijke terrorist die als chauffeur fungeerde voor de zelfmoordenaar die zich op 9 augustus 2001 opblies met een spijkerbom in de Sbarro pizzeria op de hoek van de King George straat en de Jaffastraat in het centrum van Jeruzalem. Het restaurant zat tijdens de aanslag, vol met mensen die de lunch gebruikten. Er vielen 15 doden onder wie zeven kinderen en 130 gewonden. Onder de doden bevonden zich vijf gezinsleden van de familie Schijveschuurder. De vader, de moeder, hun dochter Ra’aya van 14, Avraham Yitzhak zoon van 4 en dochter Hemda van 2 jaar. De terreurgroepen Islamitische Jihad en Hamas eisten de verantwoordelijkheid op voor deze afschuwelijke moordpartij. Het ging om een bom volgepakt met spijkers, schroeven en bouten om een zo groot mogelijk aantal slachtoffers te maken. Bij deze aanslag verloren Arnold en Frimeth Roth hun dochter Malki. De vijftienjarige Malki Roth besloot met haar vriendin Michal iets te gaan eten in deze pizzeria. Niet wetend dat de PLO-zelfmoordterrorist Izz al-Din Shuhail al-Masri die dag had uitgekozen om zichzelf in die eetgelegenheid op te blazen. Aanvankelijk konden haar ouders hun dochter niet vinden. Tegen middernacht kregen ze een telefoontje, om naar het ziekenhuis te komen. „Het was de langste reis die ik ooit heb gemaakt”, vertelde vader Arnold in een eerder interview. Ahlam Tamimi kreeg 320 jaar gevangenisstraf voor haar aandeel in deze aanslag en heeft bij herhaling verklaard geen berouw te hebben van haar daad en hetzelfde weer zou doen na vrijlating, zoals te zien is op deze video.

Zelfmoordaanslag in de Sbarropizzeria in Jeruzalem op 9 augustus 2001
Wafa Al Biss
Een andere vrouw die is vrijgelaten is Wafa Al Biss. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4136916,00.html In 2005 haalde deze vrouw het wereldnieuws met haar mislukte poging om met 20 kilogram explosieven in haar broek, zichzelf op te blazen. Tijdens haar eerste publieke optreden na haar vrijlating, sprak ze de hoop uit dat kinderen haar voorbeeld zullen volgen. “Ik hoop dat jullie hetzelfde pad kiezen dat wij genomen hebben en – zo Allah dat wil – zullen wij sommigen onder jullie als martelaars eren,” vertelde Wafa aan een groep kinderen die haar thuis opzochten. Na haar voordracht begonnen de kinderen te juichen, met vlaggen te zwaaien en een lied voor haar te zingen: “Wij offeren onze zielen en bloed om de gevangenen weer vrij te kopen. Wij zullen onze zielen en bloed offeren voor jou, Palestina.”
Al Biss probeerde in 2005 vanuit Gaza, met 10 kilo springstof in haar broek Israel binnen te komen. Zij had van de Israelische autoriteiten toestemming gekregen zich in het Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva te laten behandelen voor brandwonden die zij had opgelopen bij de explosie van een gastank in haar huis, eerder dat jaar. Een terreurgroep verbonden aan de Fatah-fractie haalde haar over zichzelf op te blazen te midden van het ziekenhuispersoneel en anderen. Israelische soldaten ontdekten dat ze zich nogal verdacht gedroeg. Ze werd verplicht zich te ontkleden en de soldaten ontdekten aldus dat ze 20 kilogram explosieven in haar broek had verborgen. Toen zij zichzelf wilde opblazen deed de drukknop het niet.

Wafa Al Biss
Het Israelische leger arresteerde deze vrouw op 22 juni 2005 waarna ze werd veroordeeld tot een gevangenisstraf van 12 jaar. Na haar arrestatie zei ze dat ze had gehoopt 50 Joden op te blazen waaronder kinderen en baby’s. Zij vertelde geen enkele wroeging te hebben voor haar actie of voor het opblazen van de mensen die bereid waren haar te helpen. Al-Biss vertelde aan verslaggevers dat het van kinds af aan haar droom was geweest een zelfmoordactie uit te voeren en martelaar te worden.
Onder de vrijgelaten terroristen was ook Abed Alaziz Salaha, bekend van de afschuwelijke lynchpartij op 12 oktober 2000 in Ram-allah.

Deze Salcha is op 24 november 2004, door het Israelische leger opgepakt en door het Israelische Militaire Gerechtshof tot levenslange opsluiting veroordeeld en nu dus vrijgelaten. Door een verkeerde afslag te nemen, waren Vadim Nourjips en Joseph Avrahmi, http://www.think-israel.org/freerepublic.octoberramallahlynch.html twee Israelische reservisten per ongeluk op gebied terechtgekomen dat onder controle staat van het PLO-bewind. Ze werden door een controlepost aangehouden en vervolgens naar een politiebureau in Ram-allah gebracht. Daar werden zij onder toeziend oog van de PLO-politie door een waanzinnige menigte, die bij gerucht had vernomen dat zij geheim agenten waren, weggehaald en op beestachtige wijze vermoord. De moord op het tweetal tart iedere beschrijving.
Abed Alaziz Salaha
De beelden werden gemaakt door de tv-ploeg van het Italiaanse Medianet. De details zijn bekend maar te gruwelijk om te noemen. Een Britse fotograaf, Mark Seager van de Daily Telegraph, getuigt in een artikel in de Jeruzalem Post van 18 oktober 2000, dat hij zich tussen de schreeuwende mensenmassa in Ram-allah bevond: “Ik zag dat ze iets achter zich aansleepten…tot mijn afgrijzen zag ik dat het een lichaam was. Het onderste deel stond in brand, het lichaam zelf was beschoten en het hoofd was tot pulp geslagen. De meute bleef maar op hem slaan en op zijn hoofd trappen. Het waren net beesten. Ik was doodsbang. Wat ik hier gezien heb, zal ik nooit vergeten. Het was moord op de meest beestachtige manier." Hij vertelde dat deze lynchpartij het meest afschuwelijke was dat hij ooit is zijn leven had gezien, erger dan Kongo en Kosovo, waar hij ook was geweest.
Op 31 december 2000, vermoordde terrorist Mustafa Muslimani, Binyamin en Talia Kahane. http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Terrorism-+Obstacle+to+Peace/Memorial/2000/Talia+Kahane.htm Ook deze moordenaar is nu vrij. Binyamin Kahane was de zoon van Rabbi Meir Kahane. Kahane is vermoord samen met zijn vrouw, toen zij in hun auto van Jeruzalem op weg naar huis in Kfar Tapuach in een hinderlaag reden, waarbij ook vijf van hun kinderen gewond raakten. Vrienden van de familie Kahane hielden op 16 oktober 2011 een bijeenkomst in Hebron waar besloten werd jacht op de terrorist Muslimani te maken en een prijs van 100.000 dollar op zijn hoofd te zetten. Een deelnemer aan de bijeenkomst zei: “De regering van Israel laat ons geen andere keus dan zelf tot actie over te gaan”?
De eveneens vrijgelaten Husam Badran, leider van een terreurtak van Hamas in Samaria, was de aanzetter van een serie dodelijke zelfmoordaanslagen tijdens de 2e intifada. Zo was deze terrorist betrokken bij de aanslag op de eerder genoemde Sbarro pizzeria in Jeruzalem, de Dolphinarium discotheek in Tel Aviv op 1 juni 2001. Hier blies een zelfmoordterrorist zich op tussen een grote groep teenagers die in de rij stonden te wachten om in de discotheek binnengelaten te worden. Daarbij kwamen 21 teenagers om het leven en raakten er 132 gewond. Zeventien vonden onmiddellijk de dood en vier stierven later aan hun verwondingen. De bom bevatte een grote hoeveelheid metalen objecten- inclusief metalen balletjes en schroeven- gemaakt om er zoveel mogelijk slachtoffers mee te maken. Daarnaast was Badran betrokken bij de zelfmoordaanslag op het Park Hotel in Netanya (30 doden) in 2002 en de aanslag op het Matza restaurant in Haifa (15 doden). In totaal werden bij aanslagen waarbij Badran betrokken was, ruim honderd onschuldige Israëlische burgers gedood.
Dit zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden van vrijgelaten terroristen met bloed aan hun handen, moordenaars bij wie enige vorm van beschaafdheid blijkbaar ver te zoeken is. Hamas zegt alles in het werk te zullen stellen opnieuw een of meerdere Israëlische militairen te zullen gijzelen. In de afgelopen 30 jaar heeft Israel duizenden gevangen terroristen vrijgelaten als gebaar van goede wil. Een deel van deze terroristen hebben direct na hun vrijlating hun moordende werk weer opgepakt waarbij meer dan 180 zijn Israeli’s gedood.
De in Damascus wonende Hamasleider Khaled Mashaal heeft al beloofd dat de vrijgekomen terroristen 'de terreur opnieuw zullen oppakken.’ De Israelische premier Benjamin Netanyahu heeft ze gewaarschuwd geen geweld meer te gebruiken, anders opnieuw opgepakt te zullen worden. Netanyahu zei zich de pijn te kunnen voorstellen van Israeliërs die familieleden hebben verloren bij aanslagen van deze terroristen. „We blijven vechten tegen terreur en elke vrijgekomen terrorist die zich opnieuw schuldig maakt aan terreur zal daarvoor rekenschap moeten afleggen”, aldus de premier.
Elke Israeli heeft letterlijk de pijn gevoeld over wat de familie Shalit de afgelopen vijf jaar heeft doorstaan, omdat er geen familie in dit land is die nog niet persoonlijk is getroffen door terrorisme of oorlog. Heel Israel leefde intensief mee met de ernstig verzwakte Israëlische soldaat en zijn familie, iets dat zelfs door de media in Arabische landen werd bewonderd. Zoveel liefde voor het leven zijn ze in de Arabische wereld niet gewend.
De vrijgelaten terroristen hoeven financieel niet direct te wanhopen want Hamas terreurleider Haniyeh heeft maar liefst 588.000 dollar voor ze uitgetrokken en PLO-leider Abu Mazen heeft elke vrijgekomen terrorist beloond met een premier van 5000 dollar. Ook in Israelische gevangenschap werden ze al rijkelijk beloond. Iedere terrorist die in Israel gevangen zit, ontvangt namelijk een maandsalaris van het bewind in Ram-allah. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/148967#.TqfWtbJqzWK De betalingen worden in het geheim door de PLO ‘Public Service’ uitgevoerd en komen voor 3.5 procent uit het algemene fonds. Dit fonds wordt voor de helft gefinancierd door de Amerikaanse overheid, en voor het overige deel voornamelijk van donaties van Europese landen. Wie tot een straf van drie jaar is veroordeeld, krijgt 1400 sjekel (280 euro) per maand. De hoogste maandsalarissen bedragen 10.000 sjekel (2000 euro) voor wie vijftien tot twintig jaar gevangen zit. Als iemand levenslang heeft gekregen (twintig tot dertig jaar), krijgt hij/zij elke maand 2400 euro op zijn/haar rekening gestort. Arabieren in de door Hamas en het PLO-bewind gerunde gebieden worden op manier bewust aangezet tot terrorisme.

Son of Ron Arad’s Pilot Flew Shalit Back Home

Lt. Col. R., son of Yishai Aviram, asked and received permission from Air Force Commander Brigadier General Ido Nehushtan, to fly Shalit to his home in Mitzpe Hila last week.
“R” treated Shalit, at his request, to a second circling of his home and flag-waving crowds before landing.
Yishai Aviram and Ron Arad parachuted from the damaged plane during a bombing mission in the First Lebanese War. Aviram was rescued in a dramatic helicopter rescue mission.
The video of the rescue shows him holding on to the skis of the helicopter. The view, shown by the Israel Broadcast Authority, was included in a special report two years ago prior to a Lebanese program on Arad.

Arab Users Tweet: Israel Cares About its Citizens

The release of Gilad Shalit has attracted worldwide attention, including that of Arab users of the Internet, who have used the Twitter social network to share their thoughts on the exchange deal with the world.
Israel’s Channel 10 News on Wednesday presented some of the tweets written by Arab users over the past 24 hours, since Shalit was released from captivity and returned to his family home.
Many Tweeters, Channel 10 noted, wondered how little Arab citizens are worth to their governments, compared to the distance that Israel was ready to go for the release of one citizen.
“I have to say something that you probably won’t like, but I’ll say it anyway: Israel exchanged 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for one Israeli,” a Syrian user nicknamed SooriMadsoos wrote. “I’m just jealous of their government, because it cares about its citizens. Their government is willing to pay the ultimate price for one citizen. All this while our government is killing us like animals.”
Many users also addressed Shalit’s health and his physical condition. Shalit, though alive, appeared thin and pale, but many Arab Tweeters showed no concern for that.
“Shalit, like half the Palestinians living in the West Bank [Judea and Samaria –ed.] and the Gaza Strip who eat under the occupation, is ‘malnourished,’” one wrote.
Another user wrote, “If you’re surprised that Shalit is undernourished, you must have forgotten that he ate in Gaza like a Palestinian.”
There is, as is well documented, however, no food shortage in Judea, Samaria or Gaza, but there is a blatantly unequal distribution of wealth in Gaza that may leave many Gazans hungry while others enjoy the malls and luxury hotels that have been photographed by the media.
The report noted that many Arab users of Twitter also criticized the media coverage of the Shalit deal.
“What the shameless media is not telling you is that Gilad Shalit was a corporal in the IDF and was a gunner in a tank,” one user wrote. “Shalit is a prisoner of war while the Palestinian women and children are prisoners of the occupation.”
A Kurdish blogger noted that the media tended to turn to ignore the Arab terrorists freed by Israel.
“They have a face, and among them are also women and children,” she noted. No children are among them, but women murderers are.
Another surfer also addressed the international media and wrote, “Thank you for the precise coverage of Shalit’s release. Can you now provide some information about the Palestinian prisoners?”
Finally, noted Channel 10, the Arab users criticized the controversial interview with Gilad Shalit, that was conducted by Egyptian reporter Shahira Amin just moments after his release. The criticism, however, was not centered on the inappropriate questions she asked the visibly weak Shalit, termed borderline torture by Israeli media, but rather about the fact that Amin chose to interview Gilad in English rather than Arabic.
“Has she forgotten the Arabic language?” wondered one user. Another suggested that “Shalit knows Arabic better than she does.”
Shalit was actually interviewed in Hebrew. The translations, including that of BBC, omitted key phrases he used, such as his predicating his wish to see all Arab prisoners freed on their abandoning their fight against Israel.
Another user focused her criticism on the fact that Amin chose to speak with Shalit and not with one of the terrorists that Israel released.

Precies wat Hamas altijd wilde. Vijf jaar onderhandelen door Israel heeft geen gelijkwaardige uitruil gebracht.

En de boodschap is duidelijk: Palestijnse terroristen die nog vastzitten in een Israëlische gevangenis, hoeven geen ontsnappingspoging te wagen. Het wachten is slechts op een volgende gijzeling - dan worden ze door Israël weer netjes in een busje afgeleverd in Hamas-land.
Geen wonder dat duizenden uitzinnige Hamas-aanhangers gisteren tijdens een vlot georganiseerde massabijeenkomst in de Gazastrook de lucratieve uitruil vierden en schreeuwden ‘Geef ons een nieuwe Gilad!’
Bedreigd
Zal het redden van één leven niet leiden tot het verlies van veel meer levens, als de vrijgelaten terroristen opnieuw hun bomgordels omgespen en hun raketwerpers aanleggen?
Misschien. Maar toch blijkt 79 procent van de Israeliërs achter de deal te staan.
In een land dat al ruim zestig jaar, sinds de oprichting in 1948, in zijn bestaan wordt bedreigd door zijn Arabische buren, is iedereen direct betrokken bij het leger.
Bijna elke burger heeft in het leger gediend en kan zich inleven in de situatie van Gilad Shalit. Het verlies van één soldaat wordt daarmee het verlies van een hele natie.
Morele overwinning
De plicht van elke Israelische regering - ongeacht de politieke kleur - om iedere soldaat thuis te brengen, maakt Israel tot een natie met een groot gevoel van solidariteit.
En dat is precies wat fundamenteel ontbreekt aan Palestijnse zijde. Hamas trommelt een uitbundige menigte op om de overwinning op Israel te vieren.
Maar elke moeder van een Palestijnse gevangene beseft ook dat de machthebbers in Gaza het leven van haar zoon duizend keer minder waard acht dan dat van een Israeliër. De morele overwinning is voor Israel.

Shalit's Father Hints Son was Abused in Captivity

Noam Shalit, father of Gilad Shalit, hinted Thursday evening in a news conference that his son had been abused during his captivity. "He underwent harsh things during his captivity and when the time comes we will elaborate," said Shalit, who spoke to reporters at Mitzpe Hila, where the family lives.
"Gilad feels good overall," Noam Shalit said. "He is under treatment and observation. He started going out of the house, he wants to get out of the house. He is playing ping pong, meeting friends, eating with an appetite."
He said Gilad's captors treated him harshly in the first 6 to 12 months of his captivity, and that things subsequently improved.
Gilad was also aware of attempts being made to secure his freedom. He knew about Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009 when it took place and was located "in proximity" to where the IDF forces were fighting in Gaza, so he heard the noises of the war clearly. He was allowed to listen to Israel radio stations, according to his father.
"He needs his own time to adjust after a long period of nearly 2,000 days in isolation without sunlight," Noam Shalit said. "He is suffering from a lack of sunlight [that causes a Vitamin D deficiency – Ed.]. We hope he will adapt quickly. I understand that there is a great desire to photograph him but patience is required, he cannot meet such a large number of people at once."
The head of the terror group "The Resistance Committees" told the Arab newspaper Al Hayat that Shalit "was held in good and humane conditions, better than the ones in which Israel holds our prisoners. He watched television and listened to the radio, and we carefully maintained his medical physical condition and his mental condition."
Terrorists imprisoned in Israel, besides receiving visitors, engaging in sports and often completing academic degrees, have access to a canteen and are provided with a healthful diet.
Arab Israelis Call to Kidnap Soldiers

Dozens of Arab citizens of Israel held a demonstration Thursday in which they called to kidnap IDF soldiers in order to free more of the terrorists in Israel’s prisons. The protest took place outside Sharon prison.
The protesters waved PLO flags. Twelve were arrested after refusing to clear the area.
Israeli Arab terrorists were released this week in exchange for kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. Their release was controversial due in part to fears that releasing Israeli Arabs in a deal with Hamas would lead more of Israel’s Arab citizens to see Hamas as representing their interests, not only because of their proximity to Israeli civilians.
At least one of the freed Israeli Arab terrorists was convicted in previous kidnappings of IDF soldiers.
MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) slammed the Thursday protest and said those who had called to kidnap soldiers should have their citizenship revoked and should be deported.
“The calls to kidnap soldiers emphasize yet again that we need to link citizenship to loyalty. These inciters are not worthy to be part of Israeli society,” he proclaimed.

JERUZALEM/GAZA (ANP/RTR) – Israel en de militante Palestijnse beweging Hamas hebben een akkoord bereikt over de vrijlating van de Israelische militair Gilad Shalit, die ruim 5 jaar geleden gevangen werd genomen. De Israelische premier Benjamin Netanyahu zei dinsdagavond dat beide partijen hun handtekening onder de overeenkomst hebben gezet.
Het Israelische kabinet stemde na een urenlang debat in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag in met het akkoord. Volgens Netanyahu komt Shalit „ binnen enkele dagen naar huis.”
Hamasleider Khaled Meshaal zei in Syrië dat Israel 1027 gevangenen vrijlaat, onder wie 27 vrouwen, in ruil voor Shalit. Meshaal dankte Egypte voor zijn bemiddelende rol. Hij zei dat de eerste 450 Palestijnse gedetineerden binnen een week vrijkomen en de anderen binnen twee maanden.
Volgens Palestijnse bronnen is Marwan Barghouti onder de gedetineerden die vrijkomen, maar Israel ontkent dat. Barghouti leidt de Fatah-beweging op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Hij zit sinds april 2002 in een Israelische cel wegens betrokkenheid bij de moord op vijf Israeliërs. In 2004 werd hij veroordeeld tot vijfmaal levenslang.
Editor: Volgens de NOS is dit een politieke stunt die beide zijden (PA en Israel) nodig hebben, maar wat dan te denken van het wereldwijde protest gericht tegen de PA door alle actiegroepen die zich hiermee bemoeit hebben. Velen hebben zich door te demonstreren, actie te voeren en gebeden uit te spreken, ingezet voor zijn vrijlating. Ook als Shalit vrij is, is de strijd nog niet gestreden. Nog zeker vijf Israelische soldaten zijn na gevangenneming nog steeds vermist. Hun namen: Baumel, Katz, Feldman, Arad en Hever.
Bij een demonstratie ten bate van Shalit en de andere vermiste soldaten in 2007 zei NIK-secretaris Ruben Vis het volgende. Sindsdien zijn de stoffelijke overschotten van Goldwasaser en Regev teruggekeerd.
Wanneer wij hier staan, op het Jonas Daniel Meijerplein, het hart van de oude Jodenbuurt, tussen de twee synagogencomplexen, en aandacht vragen voor Eldad, Ehud, en Gilad, dan sta ik in gedachten weer in het portiek van een klein flatgebouw. Ergens in Jeroesjalajiem, de hoofdstad van het joodse volk.
Tegenover mij, in het portaal van zijn huisdeur, staat een oudere man. Bij het verlaten van zijn appartement, valt mijn oog op een grote muurschildering. Ik zie een afbeelding van het Israëlische landschap, en daarbij gevoegd de woorden: wesjawoe baniem ligwoelam. Hetgeen betekent: zonen zullen terugkeren naar hun landsgrens.
Iedere keer wanneer die vader van een vermiste Israelische soldaat zijn huis verliet, en op weg ging, werd hij gesterkt door de woorden van deze profetie, van deze voorspelling dat zonen, zijn zoon!, ooit terug zou keren naar hun gebied.
Nog geen opmaat
Maar de terugkeer van drie gegijzelde soldaten, kan nog lang op zich laten wachten. Het zijn de woorden van de Israëlische premier Ehoed Olmert, een week of twee geleden, in een radiotoespraak. Het Israelische leger en Hezbollah hebben bij de Israelisch-Libanese grens drie stoffelijke overschotten en een gevangene uitgewisseld. Israel kreeg ook informatie over Ron Arad die in 1986 gevangen werd genomen. Het is kennelijk nog geen opmaat voor de vrijlating van de reservisten Goldwasser en Regev en de dienstplichtige Gilad Shalit.
Wrede fanatici
Hamas heeft de wereld laten zien met welk geweld het aan de macht is gekomen in Gaza. Het leven van Gilad Shalit ligt in handen van deze wrede fanatici.
Regev en Goldwasser patrouilleerden langs de Libanese grens, op Israelisch grondgebied. Waarom wordt de grens van Israel betwist? Niet eens aangevallen door het buurland, maar door een stelletje gevaarlijke fanatici, die het recht op geweld ontlenen aan hun geloof. Een dergelijk handelen kan de wereld niet aanvaarden. Wij komen hier tegen in het geweer!
Het toont eens te meer aan dat Israels soevereiniteit, ogenschijnlijk onbetwist, toch niet wordt aanvaard door het terroristentuig dat zich meester heeft gemaakt van de op papier net zo soevereine staat Libanon.
Niet alleen met de mond beleden
Pidjon Sjevoe’iem, het vrij krijgen van onterechte gevangenen, is een mitswa, een belangrijke Joodse waarde. Deze plicht wordt niet alleen met de mond beleden. Hier, in deze reusachtige Portugese synagoge bestaat als oud gebruik geld te doneren voor Cautivos– voor onterechte gevangenen. Wij zetten ons in voor de bevrijding van deze drie (jonge) soldaten.
Iedere moeder
Israel moet het gevecht aangaan, voor een onomstotelijk vastgestelde grens. De internationaal erkende scheidslijn, een grens die iedere burger wil verdedigen en waarvoor iedere moeder bereid is haar zoon naar het front te sturen. Onze aartsmoeder Rachel weent om het in gevangenschap wegvoeren haar kinderen. Maar eens en dat is onze hoop en vurige wens, keren de kinderen terug.
De wereld kijkt toe of erger nog: wendt de blik af. Wij niet. Wij kijken niet toe, wij blijven niet zwijgen. Het is indrukwekkend te beseffen dat wij hier staan. Net als onze vrienden in tientallen verschillende plaatsen over de hele wereld. Israels soldaten zijn onze soldaten, Israels vermisten zijn onze vermisten. Wij leven mee met ouders en families van Israels zonen en hopen vurig dat zij terugkeren. Zoals het woord van de navie luidt: wesjawoe baniem ligewoelam.

ISA Chief: Shalit Deal "Tough and Difficult"

Israel Security Agency chief Yoram Cohen reluctantly told reporters the terms approved by the cabinet for the release of Gilad Shalit "is the best deal possible."
Under the first stage of the agreement - expected to take place next week - Israel will release 450 terrorists in exchange for the freedom of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held prisoner by the Hamas terror organization for some six years.
"If there had been a better deal or viable military operation we would have chosen it," Cohen told reporters during a briefing at Shin Bet headquarters.
"I think this is a tough and difficult deal but it is the best deal for Israel from a security perspective. It is not simple to release 280 murderers. Hamas will be strengthened by this and Fatah will likely be weakened and this might even increase motivation for more attacks and kidnappings," he added.
Ninety-six terrorists will be released to Judea and Samaria, 14 to Jerusalem, and 294 to Gaza. Another 40 will be deported overseas. Six Israeli Arabs are also being released as part of the deal.
"I think that we will be able to deal with the threat and potential dangers," Cohen said "We cannot promise that they will not produce terror. Statistics show that 60 percent of those released in prisoner swaps return to activity in their terrorist organizations and that 15 to 20 percent return to Israeli prisons."
By the end of the second stage of the deal, to be completed by November, Israel will have released a total 1,027 terrorists in exchange for Gilad Shalit, whose physical and psychological condition remains unknown.

Malka Chana (Malki) Roth, 15, from Jerusalem and originally from Melbourne, was one of 15 people murdered in the bombing of the restaurant in the center of Jerusalem in August 2001.
Ahlam Tamimi, the first woman to join Hamas and the person who drove the suicide bomber who carried out the suicide bombing at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem in August of 2001, was sentenced to 16 life terms in prison but is to be freed along with 1,026 other terrorists and security prisoners to win the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit.
Frimet Roth, her mother, wrote on her “This Ongoing War” website Wednesday after learning of the Cabinet’s approval, “Our daughter Malki, murdered at the age of 15 in a restaurant massacre in Jerusalem, was a victim of jihadist hatred and barbarism. For jihadism and terrorism to end in Israel, in New York, in Madrid, in London and everywhere else, people first need to understand the scale on which it is happening. This ongoing war is killing us.”
Official Palestinian Authority media recently stated, “We wish her (Tamimi) freedom - she and [the rest of] our glorious female prisoners.”
An additional fourteen innocent victims of the murderer's bottomless hatred died in the terror attack she instigated, with 130 people injured. The murderer is not sorry. It's reasonable to think she will seek to do the same again, and will encourage others to follow her example.
“There are celebrations tonight in the same streets that sent us these barbarians. The murderer has this evening been handed a life to live – the life of a hero, an inspiration. And the government that prosecuted this monstrous woman has agreed to the satanic transaction. We are left speechless.”
She recalled Tamimi’s statements after her arrest and conviction: ”I’m not sorry for what I did. I will get out of prison and I refuse to recognize Israel's existence.”
The terrorist’s comment was prophetic.

Red Cross: Hamas' Behavior Totally Unacceptable

Shalit was kidnapped from the Israeli side of the Gaza security fence in June 2006 by Hamas terrorists after they tunneled into an IDF post. Two Israeli soldiers were killed during the abduction. The last proof of life for Shalit came in October 2009 when Hamas released a tape of Schalit in exchange for terror-prisoners being held in Israeli jails. Israel's government has since refused to release more prisoners.
"The total absence of information concerning Mr. Schalit is completely unacceptable," said the ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord.
"The Shalit family have the right under international humanitarian law to be in contact with their son," he added.
The ICRC says its repeated requests for Hamas to "permit Schalit to exchange family news with his loved ones,” and its numerous requests for access to him, have been denied by Hamas.
"Hamas has an obligation under international humanitarian law to protect Mr. Shalit's life, to treat him humanely and to let him have contact with his family," Daccord insisted.
ICRC requests for access to prisoners are usually made in private due to the sensitive, precarious position prisoners like Schalit are often in. Thursday's public request was an uncharacteristic departure from the organizations normal practices.
ICRC Tel Aviv spokesman Ran Goldstein said the Red Cross decided to mount a public campaign due to growing concern over Schalit's health and well-being.
On Thursday Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he would remove privileges for terror-prisoners exceeding strict legal obligations in response to Hamas' decision.

Intel Sources Say Abu Sisi Had Vital Info On Gilad Shalit

On a crisp February morning, Israel's Mossad nabbed an Dirar Abu Sisi from his Ukrainian train-carriage, Der Spiegel reports.
While Israel Radio reported Abu Sisi, an Arab engineer fro Gaza, had mysteriously appeared in an Israeli jail after going missing in Ukraine, they did not report the apparent motive for his abduction. But in western Intelligence circles, suspicion is mounting the man is a Hamas insider with vital information on the status of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Abu Sisi, who was staying with in-laws in the eastern town of Kharkiv while making plans to re-settle his Ukranian wife and children from the Gaza strip, boarded a train on February 18 headed for Kiev. He intended to meet his brother, who had lived in Amsterdam for years and flew in for the reuinion. But Abu Sisi never arrived.
The exact details are vague, but according to the train's conductor and porter, two men in civilian clothing stepped into Abu Sisi's carriage on the night of February 19. At around 1 AM, they told security personnel who interviewed them after the incident, the strangers escorted him off the train. However, the men later retracted these statements saying they saw "nothing."
Some Intelligence insiders assert the witnesses' retraction has a simple explanations: that Ukranian agents kidnapped Abu Sisi nad turned him over to Israel's Mossad who requested the extreme rendition. One informant told Der Spiegel on the condition of anonymity, "If Mossad goes to such an expense, and interrogates the man for six weeks, then he must know something Israel absolutely wants to hear."
Another uncorroborated source asserted officials in Jerusalem believe that Abu Sisi had vital information relating to Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier kidnapped four and a half years ago by Hamas. Since Shalit, now 24, was kidnapped, Israel and Hamas have discussed a prisoner exchange, but Hamas wants 1,000 terror-prisoners released in exchange for him. Israeli leaders fear this would lead to the muder of more Israelis and hold out hope of liberating Shalit with a commando opration.
Abu Sisi's wife Veronika immediately feared a political assassination had taken place when she learned her husband had not reached his brother in Kiev, which seemingly implies she herself knew her husband was a target. A day later she contacted UN officials and representatives from Israeli human rights groups. She asked them to find out her husband's fate. But eight days after his appearance, on February 27, Abu Sisi contacted his wife by telephone and informed her he was in prison in Ashkelon.
On March 20 Israel official admitted it had Abu Sisi in custody. Prior to that a gag-order had forbidden Israel's media and local correspondents from reporting on the affair. Beyond the flat admission of Abu Sisi's presence in it jail, Israel has released no further information on Abu Sisi, while the Ukranian government has denied involvement in his abduction.
Last week two Israeli lawyers met with Abu Sisi, who is being held in 'administrative detention', a legal holdover from British Colonial Law that was used during the British Mandate Era and is often invoked for security prisoners of both sides. No date for his release has been given.
Egypt Released Hamas Official Who Knows Where Gilad Shalit Is

Security sources said that Muhammad Dababash, who was released by Egypt last week, several days after he was arrested in Cairo, is one of the few people who know where abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit is being held. The report appeared in Yediot Aharonot, an Israeli newspaper. The release of Dababash, a senior Hamas intelligence official, is seen as an Egyptian gesture toward Hamas that is meant to promote reconciliation between it and Fatah. According to Egyptian media, Dababash was involved in smuggling weapons through the Sinai Desert, and possibly also in launching rockets at Israel.
The Israel Defense Force and other components of the Israeli defense establishment are concerned by reports coming from Damascus, on progress in the reconciliation talks being held there between the twin terror groups Hamas and Fatah.
A source in the IDF praises what he says has been effective recent security cooperation with Palestinian Authority security forces, including the investigations of recent Hamas shooting attacks on Jews in Judea and Samaria. A senior security source in the IDF's Central Command told Arutz Sheva's Hebrew-language service that "the Palestinian operations against terrorism are real. The reason is simple: they are not doing it for us. They believe that it is for their own good. It's not in their interest to have terror here."
Senior IDF officials say the situation today is in complete contrast to the reality that prevailed ten years ago, in the years that followed the Oslo Accords. They say the PA has forsaken the system of "revolving door" arrests: that is, the fictitious imprisonment of terrorists and their quiet release soon afterward. Nowadays, they say, any terrorist who is arrested and proved to have been involved in terror attacks is put on trial in the new courts that the PA's government under Salam Fayyad established under the supervision of donor countries and the European Union. Convicted terrorists are put away for long periods of time, the officials say.
However, the IDF acknowledged that the successful cooperation with the Fatah-controlled PA stems from the fact that Hamas is a common enemy of Israel and Fatah. According to the senior security source, "the Palestinian Authority does not care about preventing Hamas from killing Jews. But it fears that Hamas will carry out a military coup in [Judea and Samaria] as it did in Gaza. This is the only motive for PA's war against Hamas."
The IDF is thus concerned over reports of signs of reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, and by the possibility that Hamas will cease to be an enemy of the PA. According to the reports, the two terror groups have not reached agreement on security matters. The head of the Fatah faction in the Palestinian Legislative Council, Azzam Al-Ahmad, said Sunday that Hamas and Fatah had reached agreement on the electoral process in the PA and on the structure of the PLO, but that controversy remains about security cooperation with Israel, and about the continued operation of independent Hamas militia.
The head of Hamas's political bureau, Khaled Mashaal, said Monday that only a few small issues need to solved in order to achieve reconciliation with Fatah. Mashaal called on PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas not to continue negotiations with Israel because of renewed Israeli construction in Judea and Samaria.
Shalit Supporters Sail 'True Freedom Flotilla' in NYC

Hundreds of people set sail in New York City on Thursday in what they dubbed the True Freedom Flotilla. Ten boats sailed past the Statue of Liberty, around Manhattan, and past the United Nations, waving signs calling to free kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. 
The event was organized by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Among those in attendance were Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Gabriela Shalev, Israeli Consul General in New York Asaf Shariv, and the Reverend Michael Faulkner of the New Horizon Church, a Christian leader who has long been vocal in his support for Israel.
The True Freedom Flotilla aimed to raise awareness of Shalit's plight. Friday marks the fourth anniversary of his kidnapping by Gaza terrorists. In the time that has passed since, Hamas has not allowed international humanitarian groups to visit Shalit even once.
Organizers chose a flotilla protest in reference to the “free Gaza” flotilla movement launched in an attempt to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza. “Under the guise of a 'freedom flotilla' in the Middle East, organizations that have ties to terrorist groups have sought to create confrontations with the Israel Defense Forces. The real siege in Gaza is against Gilad Shalit,” said Conference of Presidents Chair Alan Solow and Vice Chair Malcolm Hoenlein.
The Conference of Presidents gave a humanitarian aid package for Shalit containing food, books, and glasses to Red Cross representative Rosemary Mackey. Red Cross officials have made repeated requests to Hamas to be allowed to see Shalit, but have been turned down each time.

As Israel marks four years since Iran-backed Hamas has held an Israeli-French soldier hostage, the terror group is again refusing to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit him. The latest denial comes as two boats from Iran's Red Crescent, part of the International Red Cross, await permission to join an aid flotilla bound for Gaza with the goal of illegally breaking Israel’s maritime blockade.

Last month, self-described peace activists participating in a six-vessel flotilla bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza rejected a request by Shalit’s father to bring his son a letter and small package from him.

In exchange, Israeli authorities said they would allow the flotilla to deliver its cargo to Gaza through a nearby Israeli port. The flotilla’s organizers refused his request, saying it didn’t align with their mission. Their objective, they said, was “to force the blockade of Gaza and that it could not be subject to a condition.”
At the time of Shalit’s kidnapping, Fatah – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ party – was in charge of the Gaza Strip. It wasn’t until a year later – June 14, 2007 – that Hamas took over governance of Gaza in a bloody coup.

Israel has attempted to negotiate numerous times with third parties for Shalit’s release. But since November 2009, Hamas leaders have not responded to a proposal to free Shalit that would have allowed the release of 450 Palestinian prisoners, including former terrorists linked to killings of Israeli civilians.
Israel and the international community have repeatedly called on Hamas to renounce violence, recognize Israel, and release abducted soldier Gilad Shalit in order to ease the blockade, but Hamas has refused to meet these terms.

In a meeting between Abbas and President Obama in Washington June 9, Abbas said he opposes lifting the naval blockade in the Gaza Strip, since such a move would “bolster Hamas.” Abbas stated that it should not be lifted at this stage, and any reduction of restrictions should be gradual and cautious to prevent a perceived victory for Hamas. Egypt is also in favor of maintaining the naval blockade because of arms smuggling concerns should it be lifted.

* Oct. 12, 2005 - Dion Nissenbaum and Adam Pletts of Knight Ridder News Service (now McClatchy Newspapers) are abducted by renegade members of the Fatah party. The journalists were freed later that day.
* Sept. 10, 2005 - Journalist Lorenzo Cremonesi of Corriere della Serra (Italy) is abducted in the town of Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. He was released the same day.
* Aug.15, 2005 - Journalist Mohammad Ouathi, a French citizen of Algerian origin is kidnapped and released a week later. No group claimed responsibility.
* Jan. 8, 2005 - Ramon Lobo and Carmen Secanella, reporters for Spain's El Pais, are kidnapped briefly by Palestinian militants in Gaza's Khan Younes refugee camp.
* Sept. 27, 2004 - Riad Ali, producer for CNN is abducted at gunpoint and released the following day. Ali claims that the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades was behind his kidnapping but the militia has denied the allegations.
A Song and Prayer for Gilad Shalit: Take a Little Time to Pray

A 78-year-old Jerusalem Jewish resident and a Northern Ireland Christian have teamed up to produce an extraordinary video and song for kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been in captivity under the guard of Hamas and allied terrorists since June 25, 2006.

British native and psychotherapist Elchanan Berkovitz told Israel National News he had produced a video from pictures of Shalit and wanted a song to go along with it, similar to an effort he made for missing Air Force navigator Ron Arad.
“I found someone in the Northern Ireland Friends for Israel group who said that a singer named Jim Clint had written a song for Gilad,” Berkovitz says.
After they made contact and collaborated on the project, Berkovitz posted the video and song on YouTube and showed it to Shalit’s parents on a visit to their protest tent near the office of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
"It is one thing to read about people and see pictures on television,” Berkovitz relates. "To actually be with them and see and share their pain is a humbling experience. I told them the story about Jim Clint, a Christian supporter of Israel, who was moved to write the song about Gilad."
Clint lived in Israel for nearly a decade and worked as a maintenance manager at a hostel in Tel Aviv. He is an educator for an Irish Christian community that celebrates the Jewish origins of their faith.
"Like everyone else I watched with horror the story of the Gaza flotilla and the ongoing conflict between Jews and Arabs", Clint explains. "I have witnessed myself the aftermath of a suicide bombing in the Machaneh Yehuda market in Jerusalem in July 1997. I couldn’t help thinking that in all the waves of criticism which is engulfing Israel at the moment, no one was saying anything about a young Israeli in Gaza, deprived of every human right, and facing the most awful threats if his kidnappers don’t get their way.
"I wanted Gilad’s family to know that in a far away country like Northern Ireland there are people who have not forgotten Gilad and pray for his return to his family. Like millions of others around the world, I want to give the Shalit family encouragement and hope".

FIFA Bans Campaign to Free Shalit

The world soccer federation FIFA has banned the waving of “Free Shalit” flags at the World Cup, calling it a political act. Fearing lawsuits and political recriminations, the Johannesburg Jewish Community Center called off a planned flag-waving protest at the World Cup finale between Spain and Holland Sunday.
The FIFA decision prevents the flags from being seen by hundreds of millions of viewers throughout the world who are expected to view the championship game. Shalit was kidnapped four years ago last month by Hamas and allied terrorists in an attack on an Israeli army checkpoint at a Gaza crossing.
“Free Shalit" flags have been seen at games at the South African stadium where the World Cup is being held, but the organized e-mail campaign for Sunday’s game prompted FIFA to officially ban the rally.
Hamas has not honored the Geneva Convention, which requires that Red Cross officials visit prisoners of war and act as mediators for communication with the victim’s family. His condition is not known.
In Israel, Shalit’s family has conducted a new media-sponsored campaign to free the soldier at “any price.” Counter-protestors have demonstrated for his release without any price, and have cited previous “price tag” releases of terrorists that have boomeranged, resulting in the deaths of nearly 200 Israelis by terrorists who were freed.
In England, Bnei Akiva youth movements gathered thousands of signatures from British citizens, in front of British Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing St. in London. Bnei Akiva UK Director Zak Jeffay said that several British Parliament members have signed the petition.
“Human Rights” Flotilla Organizers Refuse Letters for Shalit

The parents of Gilad Shalit, held captive in Gaza for nearly four years, asked the organizers of the “human rights” flotilla to take letters and packages for Gilad. The answer was no.
The Shalit family even offered its help in asking the Government of Israel to allow the ships to pass through to Gaza – and still the organizers of the humanitarian mission said no.
Gilad has been held captive by Hamas terrorists in Gaza for nearly four years, during which time he has been allowed absolutely no contact with neutral or Israeli elements.
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry Director-General Yossi Gal summoned the ambassadors of the participating countries in the flotilla – Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden and Ireland – and made it clear that Israel would not allow the ships to reach Gaza. He said that the ships' goods bound for Gaza could be dropped off in Ashdod, where they would be screened by security personnel and then delivered to Gaza.
Gal also told them that Gaza is run by a terrorist organization whose priority is not the welfare of its residents: “This organization continues to arm itself with arms and rockets, and to perpetuate a situation of armed conflict with Israel, after years of attacking Israeli citizens, under Iranian auspices. Israel therefore has the natural right to prevent the arrival of unsupervised products in Gaza.”
Defense Minister Ehud Barak similarly told some of the above countries’ foreign ministers last night and today that the Israel Navy would block the ships should they try to reach the Gaza shore. He said that the ships are simply a “political and media provocation,” and not a humanitarian project. Barak emphasized that thousands of tons of food and equipment arrive in Gaza each day.
The organizers of the flotilla told the Shalit family that their main purpose in organizing the convoy is to break the blockade and to deliver the humanitarian aid. They refused to make the transfer of the aid conditional on anything having to do with Gilad Shalit.
The Shalit family said afterwards that they regret the refusal of the convoy organizers to cooperate or to grant humanitarian aid to their son Gilad, “who has been held by Hamas in Gaza for four years, against all law and international charters.”

Al-Jazeera Airs Footage of Israeli Captives

The pan-Arab news network Al-Jazeera broadcast archive images of captive IDF soldiers from the past on Thursday night as Hamas continued to pressure Israel to release terrorists in exchange for captive soldier Gilad Shalit. The network aired footage of Nissim Shalem and Yossef Groff.
Shalem and Groff were taken captive in Lebanon in 1982. They and fellow captive soldier Hezi Shai were returned to Israel in 1985 in exchange for the release of 1,150 terrorists. One of the freed terrorists, Ahmed Yassin, went on to found Hamas.
The footage aired on Al-Jazeera was recorded in 1983. In the video, the two soldiers accused Israel of murdering innocent Arabs in Sabra and Shatila, and compared IDF soldiers to nazis.
Shalem later told Israeli reporters that his terrorist captors had forced him to make the statements. He told his captors that the IDF was not responsible for the massacre, but “you couldn't tell them the truth,” he explained.
Al-Jazeera used the tapes as part of a three-part series it is airing on the exchange of Israeli captives for imprisoned terrorists.
In 2006, Hamas kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit near Gaza. The terror group claims Shalit is alive and well, although it has refused to allow international observers to make contact with the young captive. Only one short video clip of Shaliit was released by Hamas since his capture.
Hamas leaders are demanding the release of over 1,000 terrorists in exchange for Shalit's freedom.
