Egypt Paid Hamas Fuel for Ceasefire: Report
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

Egypt Paid Hamas Fuel for Ceasefire: ReportEgypt offered fuel to Hamas in exchange for a ceasefire of missile attacks on Israel, a Hamas legislator said Monday, according to the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency.

Younis al-Astal, affiliated with Hamas, said the deal was made to alleviate lengthy blackouts that have plagued Gaza residents since Egypt took steps to slash the amount of fuel being smuggled into Gaza through underground tunnels.

The move by Egypt is another indication of the new regime’s desire for quiet in Gaza, which poses a threat to Egypt’s fragile stability just as much, if not more so, than it poses a threat to routine life in Israel.

Terrorists from Gaza frequently cross into the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt to stage attacks on tourists and to prepare to infiltrate back into Israel with arms and explosives intended for use against civilians in urban centers.

The oil-for-ceasefire deal also makes Hamas more dependent on the new Egyptian regime, which is vocally anti-Israel but has been careful not to cross “red lines” that would be inacceptable to the United States, on which Cairo is dependent for military and economic assistance.

ElBaradei Exposes Secret U.S.-Egypt Talks on Israel

by Elad Benari

ElBaradei Exposes Secret U.S.-Egypt TalksMohamed ElBaradei, a prominent Egyptian political figure and a possible candidate for the presidency, said on Tuesday that the United States is doing whatever it can within to stop Egypt from annulling the 1979 peace agreement with Israel.

In an interview with the Iranian-based Fars news agency, ElBaradei revealed that the future of the Camp David Accord has been the focus of recent meetings between Egypt’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and Washington.

“The negotiations were completely secret and confidential,” ElBaradei told the news agency, adding, “What the supreme military council said was that the talks were about bilateral and mutual relations, but I believe that Americans wanted to ensure that the deals signed between Egypt and Israel will remain intact if Islamists ascend to power.”

The two Islamist parties affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafi movement have won the majority of votes in the first two rounds of elections in the country.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/150856#.Tv2vhNWvkVq

The ultra-conservative Salafist Al-Nour party said last week it is willing to hold talks with Israel.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/150916#.Tv2vxNWvkVq

A spokesman for the party told an Egyptian daily newspaper that some reports which said that party chairman Emad Abdul Ghafour was willing to maintain contacts with Israel were true - and added doing so did not violate Islamic principles.

Ghafour himself said that “treaties that Egypt has signed must be upheld, and we intend to respect them” but also claimed that Israel had not implemented certain clauses in its treaty with Egypt regarding the Arab population which at the time inhabited Judea, Samaria and Gaza, parts of which eventually comprised the Palestinian Authority.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/150916#.Tv2wLdWvkVq

“There are several clauses that must be enacted in order for the Palestinians to feel they have gained from the peace process,” Ghaffour said.

Earlier this month, a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood told the Fars news agency that the Camp David Accord between Egypt and Israel was “cruel” and said, “It is natural that after the victory of the revolution many things and issues should be studied and dealt with. Hence, the issue of revising the Camp David Accord will also be in the list of the top priorities of (Egypt's new) officials to be studied in its appropriate time.”

Hamas Moving HQ from Syria to Egypt
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
31 mei 2011, lyar 27, 5771

Hamas is moving its headquarters from Damascus to Egypt, and the terror group is strengthening itself in the Sinai, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee Monday.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142381

He also noted that the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Hamas sprung, also has become a more powerful force in Egypt since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142154  The Prime Minister stated his concern about the inability of the provisional military regime in Egypt to exercise sovereignty in the Sinai, which borders Israel and from where Bedouin and Hamas terrorists smuggle weapons from Iran, Sudan, Syria and elsewhere into Gaza.

Hamas: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/138936

Al-Qaeda also has brought 400 terrorists into the area, according to an Egyptian official quoted by an Arab news agency,

The Prime Minister confirmed previous reports that Hamas supreme leader Khaled Mashaal has pulled out of Damascus, where his presence and welcome by Syrian President Bashar Assad is an additional worry for him in the face of the continuing uprising.

The vacuum of power in the Sinai has been illustrated by “the two gas explosions that occurred there” this year, Prime Minister Netanyahu told the Knesset committee. “Global terrorist organizations are interfering, there and their presence is increasing because of the geographic connection between Sinai and Gaza."

The Sharon government agreed to pull out of Gaza following the 2005 expulsion of nearly 10,000 Jews in the area. Agreements with Egypt on security in the Sinai began falling apart after Hamas ousted Fatah from Gaza four years ago.

Following the Operation Cast Lead counterterrorist campaign at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, Israel relied on American and European guarantees to monitor the transfer of goods and merchandise from the Sinai to Gaza, but these also have eroded. The opening of the Rafiah crossing this past Saturday has further harmed security.

The de facto dominance of Bedouin tribes and allied terrorists in the Sinai has set the stage for further stockpiling of advanced arms by Hamas and for plotting terrorist attacks at tourist and holy sites in Egypt.

Egypt Opens Rafiah Crossing
by David Lev
29 mei 2011, lyar 25, 5771

Hordes of Gaza Arabs rushed through into Sinai Saturday morning, as Egyptian authorities opened the Rafiah crossing, this time on a permanent basis, they said. Egyptian officials said that the crossing operated smoothly on its first day, and Gaza Arabs interviewed by reporters praised the opening, calling Egypt “very brave” for the move.

The crossing is set to be open every day, except Fridays and holidays, between 10 AM and 5 PM. Women, and individuals under age 18 and over age 40 will be permitted to enter Egypt without a specific permit, while others will have to receive a visa. With that, Egypt prevented 23 Gaza Arabs from entering Sinai, as they were on a “no-cross” list, prevented from entering Egypt because of their connections to criminal or terrorist groups.

Two medical teams were stationed at the crossing, one to examine Gaza Arabs who claim to be seeking medical treatment in Israel, and a second to examine others to ensure they are not carrying communicable diseases.

It should be noted that the opening of the Rafiah crossing is a violation of previous Egyptian agreements with Israel. According to the agreements, Egypt is supposed to consult with Israel on the opening of the Rafiah crossing, and European Union officials are supposed to be present to ensure that no weapons or materials that could be used to build bombs and missiles are brought from Sinai into Gaza. In addition, Israeli troops are supposed to be able to observe the activity at the crossing via closed-circuit TV. None of these elements were included in the Egyptian move. Speaking to reporters, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said that Israel “will obviously be looking to preserve security arrangements at the border and hope nothing will be done to allow Hamas to empower itself and to reinforce its terrorist infrastructures. The Israeli position has been made known to all relevant authorities, including in Egypt.”

Hams spokesperson Abu Zaheri thanked the Egyptians for opening the crossing. “This is a step to destroying the siege on Gaza and will improve relations between Hamas and Egypt,” he said.

MK Nachman Shai (Kadima) said that “the opening of the Rafiah crossing completely upends the issue of a siege on Gaza, and removes from Israel an important tool to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Gaza and for the return of Gilad Shalit. This is a terrible failure of the government, which has lost the support of the international community and of Egypt in its attempts to isolate Hamas. Under these circumstances we should announce the complete end of the siege of Gaza, which has now been rendered toothless and ineffective,” he said.

Video of Protests Outside Israel Embassy in Cairo
by Gil Ronen
12 april 2011, Nissan 8, 5771

Egyptian bloggers have uploaded videos of the protest Friday outside Israel's embassy in Cairo. Meanwhile, former president Hosni Mubarak has addressed Egyptians for the first time since he was overthrown.

The videos show a demonstration that begins at twilight and continues into the evening, with hundreds of participants shouting slogans and some holding a poster calling for an "Intifadah" against Israel on May 15.

“They tried to reach the flag on top of the embassy but failed,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told Israel National News Sunday. He added that the incident was not out of the ordinary except for the large number of demonstrators. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/143453

However, it was the first time Egyptians have protested so close to the embassy, which effectively was off-limits before the provisional military government replaced Mubarak.

Mubarak denied allegations of personal corruption in a recorded message published on Arabic network Al-Arabiya. The message is his first public announcement since he was deposed February.

Al-Arabiya published audio of the speech (in Arabic) on YouTube and provided the following transcript:

Dear Egyptians, brothers and sisters:

I have felt great pain – and still – due to the unfair campaigns and unjust accusations to which my family and I have been exposed, aiming mainly to endanger my reputation, question my honesty and distort my military and political history during which I exerted great efforts for Egypt and its people, in war and peace.

I preferred to give up my post as a president, placing the interest of the nation and its people over any other interest, and I chose to keep away from the political life, wishing all the best and progress for Egypt and its people within the period ahead.

However, as I have spent my whole life in serving the nation with honesty and integrity, I cannot remain silent in the face of the continual campaigns of defamation and false accusations that aim at ruining the reputation and integrity of my family and me. I have waited these past weeks for the Egyptian public prosecutor to reach the truth from all the countries worldwide that would prove that I don’t have any property or financial assets abroad.

And because I know that the truth should prevail and in order to put an end to all the defamation attempts, I have decided the following:

According to my final financial statement in which I stated that:

1) I do not own any accounts or assets outside Egypt. I agree to sign in any form that would enable the Egyptian public prosecutor to ask the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to contact all the foreign ministries worldwide to inform them of my approval, and my wife’s, to reveal any account that we have abroad since I started my military and political public work until now. This is for the Egyptian people to know that their former president has accounts only in one Egyptian bank, according to what I have mentioned in my final financial statement.

2) I agree to offer any authorizations that would enable the Egyptian public prosecutor – through the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s contacts with foreign ministries worldwide – to take all the necessary legal procedures to reveal whether my wife, either of my sons, Alaa or Gamal, and I own any properties or assets directly or indirectly, whether they were commercial or personal, since I started working in the military and political public works and until now, so that everyone would make sure that all the allegations handled by the local and foreign mass media about me and my family’s ownership of huge properties abroad were false.

Accordingly, the applied procedures will reveal that the sources of assets and properties of my sons Alaa and Gamal are far from suspicions of illegal profiteering and power exploitation.

Accordingly and after the concerned authorities confirm what I am saying, I will stick to all my legal rights to have action against everyone who tried to defame my reputation and that of my family whether inside or outside the country.

Brothers and sisters, Egypt will always remain our main goal and wish. We pray for God to save Egypt and its people and show them the right path.

Mubarak and his family are currently under house arrest in Sharm Al-Sheikh. Some bloggers saw the fact that Mubarak chose Saudi-based Al-Arabiya for his address as a sign that Saudi Arabia will help him defend himself against charges of corruption.

IDF Navy Seizes Ship Filled With Arms on way from Syria to Egypt
14 maart 2011, Adar Bet 8, 5771
by Aryeh Ben Hayim

This afternoon, the IDF announced that the Victoria, a  German owned, French operated and Liberian flagged  vessel, was apprehended 200 miles off the Israeli coast by the IDF Navy. It was carrying arms from the port of Latakia in Syria to Alexandria in Egypt via Turkey. The IDF Navy fighters, in an operation reminiscent of earlier ship seizures, met with no resistance. The assumption is that the arms were intended for the Hamas in Gaza and would reach them via the smuggling tunnels between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

The ship and crew have been towed to an Israeli port for continued questioning and inspection. 3 crates of arms were found on the deck and the inspection of the remaining hundreds of crates in the ship's cargo is expected to reveal that this was merely the tip of the iceberg.

Brigadier General Avi Bnayahu, the IDF spokesperson,  said to Israel Army Radio "apparently we will find more evidence of the Iran, Syria, Hezbollah axis". The official announcement claimed that there was no Turkish involvement in the shipment, provoking speculation that Israel was cautious not to further inflame its troubled relations with the AKP Islamic Party government of Turkey.

The IDF pledged to continue its intelligence and operational activity to protect Israeli security and prevent an arms injection that would empower terror in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

The MInistry of Foreign Affairs announced: This attempt at smuggling large amounts of weaponry aboard the Victoria provides additional proof of Israel’s imperative need to examine all goods entering the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Israel cannot allow weapons and military equipment to reach the hands of terrorists, who will use them against its civilian population.

Egypt Denies Iranian Ships Passed Through Suez Canal

by Chana Ya'ar
22 februari 2011,  Adar 18, 5771

Egyptian officials at the Suez Canal have categorically denied an Iranian announcement on Al Aram TV Sunday morning that two of its warships had already passed through the canal.

The ships are allegedly the Kharg, a 33,000-ton refueling and support vessel, and the Alvand, a 15,000-ton light patrol frigate. According to a statement issued last week by the Iranian navy, the Kharg carries a crew of 250 and three helicopters. The Alvand is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.

The officials insisted that the ships are still expected to arrive at the southern entrance of the canal in the Gulf of Suez later Sunday. They are then slated to enter the Mediterranean by Monday morning on their way to the Syrian port of Latakia for a year of training.

Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told reporters Sunday the government is taking a "grave view" of the Iranian move, which he said was aimed at exploiting the chaos created by the recent upheaval in which the 30-year regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was toppled.

"I think that today, we can see what an unstable region we live in, a region in which Iran tries to exploit the situation that has been created in order to expand its influence by passing warships through the Suez Canal. Israel views this Iranian move with utmost gravity," Netanyahu told ministers at the government's weekly Cabinet meeting.

This would be the first time Egypt has allowed Iranian naval vessels into the Suez Canal since the 1979 Revolution, when diplomatic ties were broken between the two nations.

Iran announced its plans a week ago to deploy warships from its 12th Flotilla to areas near Israel and to dock at a Syrian port for a year. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned at the time that such a move would be considered a “serious provocation.”  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142364

Egyptian military officials who currently are in control of the country allegedly approved the request Friday after Iranian diplomats assured them the two vessels carried no nuclear or chemical materials, and no weapons, according to the state-run MENA news agency.

Previously officials at the canal had denied any knowledge of the matter.

With the move, Iran may have succeeded in establishing its political and naval presence in an area previously reached only through its proxies -- the Gaza-based Hamas terrorist group and the Lebanon-based Hizbullah terrorist organization. Iran, also closely allied with Syria, has recently tightened ties with Turkey as well.

US Students Join Exodus from Egypt to Israel
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
15 februari 2011, Adar 11, 5771

Twelve American university students have arrived from Egypt to Hebrew University in Jerusalem, joining the growing exodus to Israel. Five other students fled to Haifa University last week for a safe haven from Egyptian riotshttp://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/142218

The new arrivals are from Allegheny, Vanderbilt, Michigan State and Princeton universities as well as UCLA and the University of California at Berkeley, Santa Barbara and San Diego.

The students’ ordeal in Egypt did not go to waste. “The various courses taught by top academics of the Hebrew University will enable the students to put their personal experience in Egypt and in Israel within a broader academic framework,” said Prof. Mimi Ajzenstadt, provost of The Rothberg International School.

"When we heard what was happening in Egypt, some colleges, such as the University of California, reached out to us," Hebrew University official Jonathan Kaplan told Israel National News.

Simultaneously, Hebrew University reached out to partner schools and suggested that “if they needed assistance, we would be happy to help out,” added Kaplan, Director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies at the Rothberg International School on Jerusalem.

He said that the university is providing a special orientation to assist their transition to the Jerusalem campus.

“We are grateful to the staff at the Hebrew University for being so responsive to our request to enroll two Princeton students at the Hebrew University, where the students can continue to study Arabic and Middle East issues at this important time in the region,” said Nancy Kanach, director of the Office of International Programs at Princeton University.

Hundreds Injured in Cairo Riots
by Chana Ya'ar
15 februari 2011, Adar 11, 5771

Hundreds have been injured in what is shaping up as a potential Egyptian civil war. Pro and anti-government demonstrators battled each other Wednesday afternoon and evening in Cairo's central Tahrir Square.

Both sides were hurling rocks at each other, as tear gas grenades were fired at the crowd. Similar scenes were reported in Alexandria immediately following an address by President Hosni Mubarak, announcing that he would not leave the country, and that he intended to serve the remaining seven months of his term.

Tens of thousands of Mubarak supporters in Cairo wielding sticks and whips charged on horses and camels against as many others demanding the president's ouster, according to eyewitness reports by the Associated Press.

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142107

Banned pan-Arab satellite television news network Al-Jazeera reported that at least one person was killed in the melee and hundreds of others were injured. Shots were heard, but it was unclear who had fired the guns.

According to the al-Arabiya news network, some 500 people have been injured so far in the clashes that have engulfed the Egyptian capital.

Four firebombs were hurled by the rioters as Egyptian soldiers moved in to extinguish the flames, according to a Reuters reporter. Mustafa Naggar, an organizer of the anti-Mubarak movement, told Reuters the firebombs had been thrown by pro-Mubarak "thugs."

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley commented in a Twitter post to the media that the Obama administration was "concerned about detentions and attacks on news media in Egypt. The civil society that Egypt wants to build includes a free press."

The U.S. has expressed support for the participation of the extreme Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which backs terrorism, in any future Egyptian government. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142101

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has had little to say about the ongoing chaos, and was careful in his words to reporters when asked for a comment. "I am deeply concerned by the ongoing violence in Egypt," Ban said in a statement after meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London on Wednesday. "I once again urge restraint from all sides."

Daarmee is in feite alles gezegd.

Nieuw leiderschap Midden Oosten

Onderstaande tekst staat in Esther 9.

ElBaradei’s Ultimatum to Mubarak: 48 Hours to Leave the Country
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Published: February 11, 2011

Egyptian uprising idol Mohammed ElBaradei has ordered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to leave the country by Friday – or he will be a “dead man walking” and not just a lame-duck president.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142044

The aging Egyptian leader, reportedly suffering from cancer, insists he will remain in power. He said Tuesday night, “This dear country is my country ... and I will die on its land."

Mubarak dramatically announced he will not run in September’s presidential elections, but shortly afterwards, U.S. President Barack Obama dealt him a stinging slap, stating that a transition to a new government should begin “now.”  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142088

In addition, Obama sent a senior diplomat to meet with ElBaradei.

Massive rallies that took place in Cairo and in Alexandria on Tuesday were free of the police brutality that had killed anywhere between 70 and 300 people, depending on whose estimate is believed, in the early days of the rioting. Addressing Mubarak’s speech, ElBaradei told the crowds that a huge protest to be held on Friday, the Muslim day of rest, will become “the Friday of departure” for Mubarak.

He rejected the president’s announcement as "too little too late," and is counting on a continuation of the momentum that has swept the country, spread to Jordan  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/142075, Yemen and Syria  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142043 and worries the Palestinian Authority.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142094

The radical Muslim Brotherhood has become more vocal in its calls for Mubarak’s resignation, drowning out several opposition groups that have accepted an offer by newly-appointed vice president Omar Suleiman to negotiate.

ElBaradei, who won the Nobel Peace prize while heading the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency despite his defense of Iran’s nuclear development, accused Mubarak of trying to deceive the country by not resigning immediately. ElBaradei has said that he is not necessarily interested in replacing Mubarak.

Although the president said he will not run for re-election, he did not mention the name of his son Gamal, who has been groomed to be his successor. Gamal and his family reportedly fled the country last week when it was clear that the protest movement was becoming a threat to his father’s regime.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/141969

Working against Mubarak is President Obama’s decision to instruct U.S. ambassador to Egypt Margret Scobey to speak with ElBaradei. The move was "part of our public outreach to convey support for an orderly transition in Egypt," according to U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.

President Obama earlier said in reaction to Mubarak’s speech that an “orderly transition must be meaningful, it must be peaceful, and it must begin now.”

He also sent former ambassador to Egypt Frank Wisner, a personal friend of Mubarak, to Cairo to report back on the situation.

WikiLeaks: US Secretly Backed Plans for Rebellion in Egypt
Published: 01/30/11, 2:31 PM

The United States in the past last three years supported ‘democracy activists” who planned to overthrow the Mubarak regime, according to leaked cables quoted by the London Telegraph.

“[Unidentified activist] expressed satisfaction with the December 3-5 ‘Alliance of Youth Movements Summit’ in New York, noting that he was able to meet activists from other countries and outline his movement's goals for democratic change in Egypt,” stated one cable by U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey. “He told us that the other activists at the summit were very supportive, and that some even offered to hold public demonstrations in support of Egyptian democracy in their countries.”

The embassy helped keep the identity of the dissident secret from Egyptian police, the Telegraph said, but he has been arrested in the recent demonstrations.

The leaked documents reveal that Scobey sent a cable to the Secretary of State two years ago, in which she wrote, “April 6 activist on his US visit and regime change in Egypt.” She added that embassy sources said the plan for “a transition to a parliamentary democracy [was] “so sensitive it cannot be written down.”

Scobey cautioned that she thought the plot was unrealistic, but contact was maintained with the activist, who was a principle source for information for Egyptian abuse of human rights.

Reporters have frequently questioned the State Department about American aid to Egypt in light of constant reports, including those by the American government, that the country routinely suppresses human rights and violates freedom of expression.

The leaked document, along with President Obama’s tepid criticism of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Saturday night have set off more criticism of his foreign policies. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142015

“The harsh reality of events in the Middle East have all decisively proven that the assumptions that underpinned President Obama's Middle East policy initiatives were wrong,” wrote Foreign Policy.com’s Peter Feaver Saturday.

“The foreign policy team seems to be quite uncertain how to proceed and with good reason: our ability to predict what will happen is probably even less than our ability to shape what will happen.”

US Threatens to Cut Aid to Egypt
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Published: January 30, 2011

Responding five days after the unprecedented protest rallies in Egypt, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that Obama administration threatened to review and cut military aid to Egypt, which has totaled $28 billion since 1975. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142010

After it signed peace accords with Israel, Egypt became the largest recipient of U.S. aid in the Middle East, except for Israel, and annual military aid of nearly $1.5 billion includes F-4 jet aircraft, F-16 jet fighters, armored personnel carriers, Apache helicopters, antiaircraft missile batteries, and aerial surveillance aircraft.

The threat of a cut in aid to Cairo comes as President Barack Obama called on Hosni Mubarak to halt the violence in Egypt, where more than 100 opponents to the regime have been killed and thousands injured. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142015

Former Democratic and Republican party officials presented the president with a demand to cut aid to Egypt. “We are paying the price for the fact that the administration has been at least of two minds on this stuff, and we should have seen it coming,” said Robert Kagan, co-chair of the bipartisan Egypt working group.

“I think Mubarak has a week at most left in office,” Andrew Albertson, formerly with the Project on Middle East Democracy and the working group, told Politico Saturday. “He’s ultimately done. Either he flees fast, or there’s a transition to [newly appointed Vice President Omar] Suleiman, or the protests continue. Meanwhile, people are becoming incredibly angry with the United States.”

Officials in the Obama administration reportedly are at odds with themselves, arguing between maintaining a “cautious” policy and stating in public that Mubarak must resign.

Cutting the annual $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt will not be easy. Cairo pays $1.1 million a year to lobbyists to “provide assistance and advice, as requested, to the Embassy in the task of securing and further enhancing the interests of Egypt in the United States in the political, economic, military and other fields.” according to their contract, quoted by the Atlantic.

Military assistance also is a high priority item in the military-industrial complex in the United States, affecting employment and the balance of payments.
