Light Snow Covers Parts of Jerusalem, 8 Inches of Rain in North

Near-hurricane force winds and heavy rains drenched Israel Sunday and Monday, dropping 20 centimeters (eight inches) of rain in the far north, more than two meters (seven feet) of snow on the upper Hermon Mountains, and light snow in parts of Jerusalem and Gush Etzion.
The storm also caused millions of dollars of damage along the Mediterranean Coast and disrupted power after dozens of trees fell on power lines. The snow in Jerusalem and Gush Etzion quickly disappeared after dawn and was not enough to delay school openings, but the white stuff gave residents the satisfaction of seeing snow after several months of long hot summer and rainless November.
The Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) rose by nine centimeters (over three inches) since the storm began, and the level will continue to rise as runoff reaches the lake from mountain streams. However, an accumulated shortage still leaves the Kinneret and Israel’s underground water resources seriously depleted.
More rain is expected at the end of this week, but weather forecasters say the system will be much weaker and will move out of the region by Sunday morning.
Most schools in the northern Golan Heights were closed this morning (Monday) as snow plows tried to clear the roads of up to 3.5 feet of snow that the storm system dumped on the area overnight.
In most areas from the northern border to the northern Negev, rain often fell at the rate of more than an inch an hour. Be’er Sheva recorded 7.5 centimeters (three inches) of rain overnight.
The savage storm system weakened late Monday morning, and seasonal temperatures, under partly cloudy skies, are expected to return on Tuesday, with the possibility occasional light rain in the north.
The longer-term forecast calls for warmer than usual weather on Wednesday and Thursday followed by a sharp drop on Friday, with rain in the north and central regions and more snow on the Hermon.
The wicked winds and heavy rain ravaged the entire region, killing three people in Egypt when a factory collapsed. In Israel, police said a Russian tourist died after he was blown into the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday. His body was washed ashore on a metropolitan Tel Aviv beach.
An ancient pier in Caesarea, north of Tel Aviv, was destroyed by the winds, which reached hurricane force of 75 miles an hour off the coast.
Ben Gurion airport was forced to delay several incoming flights, some of which were canceled or diverted to Cyprus and Egypt.
Fire Damage Estimated at 120 Million; New Fear – Floods

Finance Ministry experts have estimated the total cost of damages done by the Carmel fire at 120 million shekels. The figure includes damages to property and infrastructure, and does not include damage done to forests and other natural areas.
An initial study found that 50-60% of the damaged property was insured.
The ministry has given 2,500 shekels to each person whose home was destroyed by the fire, in order to allow them to buy basics such as clothing. In addition, 25 million has already been allocated to fix damage to the sewer system.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has requested waiving of bureaucratic government tender procedures to expedite repairs.
The government has taken a variety of other steps to provide quick help for fire victims as well.
Residents of the Carmel region expressed concern Friday over reports of an approaching storm. Weather forecasters predict rain and wind on Friday and Saturday, particularly in the north of the country.
It is feared that those areas scorched by the fire will be at risk for flooding as the ash and soot that remain will prevent water from being absorbed by the earth. In addition, rain could cause erosion of the topsoil due to the fact that in some areas, even the roots of trees were burnt by the fire.
Fire and Rescue Services workers in the region are on alert for floods, in case they are called on to conduct evacuations or rescue operations.

Carmel Fires Extinguished; Light Rain Begins to Fall

Firefighters reported late on Sunday evening that all the fires that had been raging on the Carmel since Thursday are now out. Fire crews are still in the process of inspecting several points where fires have been burning and all crews are expected to remain on scene while the work is in the process of completion.
Police announced that all evacuated residents can return to their homes with the exception of residents of Beit Oren and Kfar Sitrin.
During the day on Sunday, the Evergreen Supertanker fire-fighting airplane and dozens of other fire-dousing aircraft helped stop the Carmel fire from spreading any further. By 4:00 PM, firefighters had been preparing to announce that the fire is officially under control.
Colder temperatures and possible rain showers were forecast and were also expected to help end the fiery nightmare that the Carmel region has undergone for more than 72 hours. A light, intermittent rain did begin to fall during the night, helping to finish the job and give the spirits of Israelis a lift.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu echoed this assessment Sunday afternoon. “The mountain is smoldering, but it has almost ceased to burn,” he said. He spoke at the Druze village of Ussefiya, one of the locations at which the huge fire was started Thursday, where he was to attend an ad hoc Local Council meeting.
Netanyahu sounded optimistic when he addressed the press. He said that numerous nations of the world offered Israel aid in putting out the fire, and that one reason for this was that the entire world is familiar with Israel's biblical landscape, including Mount Carmel. He claimed with satisfaction that Israel appeared to be bringing the fire to an end after three days, while similar events last three weeks in other countries. The difference, Netanyahu explained, is that Israel is a small country and that “we have no other land.”
Netanyahu noted that he had received “important assistance” from Jordan and had had good conversations with King Abdullah II, as well as President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who also offered aid. “Perhaps something good will come of this disaster,” Netanyahu said.

Most of the dead were prison guards in the process of evacuating inmates from a prison in the path of the fire. Their bus was overtaken by fast-moving flames. The head of the Haifa Police Department, Deputy Commander Ahuva Tomer was critically injured in the fire.
Israel appealed for Cyprus, Italy, Russia and Greece to send firefighting planes to quell the flames which continued to rage. Spain was the first to respond, promising to send four firefighting planes to help Israel battle the inferno.
"Today, our hearts are in Haifa, with the firefighters that with incredible courage are battling the flames; some of them have been injured, along with residents of the area." said President Shimon Peres. "We are praying for a miracle. We are praying for their safety. We are praying for the fire to end." Magen David Adom Director General, Eli Bin called the fire the most severe such event in the country’s history.
Israel has been in the grip of a severe drought. Rains which normally come in November after the hot summer months failed to materialize this year. Israeli news outlets reported that the fire, aided by strong winds, has already burned at least 7,000 dunams (about 1,730 acres) of natural forest.
The University of Haifa was evacuated as a precaution as were residents of western neighborhoods, two prisons and a psychiatric hospital and at least two nearby villages.

GROOTSTE NATUURBRAND OOIT IN ISRAEL: – Brandbestrijding vliegtuigen van Groot-Brittannië, Griekenland en Cyprus landden vrijdagmorgen vroeg in Israël. Het zijn de eersten, van een geplande internationale hulpactie, die aankwamen om de massale bosbrand die zich sinds donderdag allesverschroeiend een weg baant door een groot gebied in het noorden van Israel te bestrijden. Meer dan 17.000 bewoners in het noorden, waaronder 600 gevangenen uit een gevangenis, werden geëvacueerd omdat de brand uit de hand liep, daarbij duizenden hectaren naaldbos verwoestende van de hellingen van het Karmel plateau richting Haïfa, de derde grootste stad van Israel. Het dodental van de brand bereikte vrijdag 42 waarvan de meesten betrokken waren bij een ongeval met een bus met leden van een gevangenis bewakersdienst die op weg waren naar de gevangenis Damon om daar gevangenen te helpen evacueren. BRAND WOEDT VOORT IN BERGEN VAN CARMEL: – Een brand die donderdag uitbrak in het Carmel gebergte in Israël verplaatst zich nog steeds in westelijke richting van de Carmel sinds vrijdagavond 03 december. Zelfs al binnen het eerste half uur na de uitbraak van de brand, was er de vrees dat de brand zou kunnen uitmonden in de grootste vuurzee van de Israëlische geschiedenis. Een nieuwe brand werd vrijdag gemeld in de buurt van het Kiryat Bialik industriegebied, ten noorden van Haïfa. De brandweer kwam op het toneel in een poging om de vlammen weg te houden van de industriële gebouwen van het gebied. Een woordvoerder van de brandweer heeft een verzoek bekend gemaakt aan alle brandweerkorpsen om te komen helpen om de uitgeputte brandweerlieden van het noorden, die weigeren om de brandhaard te verlaten maar op de rand van de afgrond staan, te ontlasten. Hij kondigde aan dat brandweerdiensten kritisch tekort beginnen te komen aan brandbestrijding materialen. Het feit dat Israel geen regen heeft en zijn materiaal nodig heeft om te vechten tegen kleinere bosbranden in het noorden heeft ook hun aanbod materieel uitgeput. Het merendeel van de grote bosbranden in Israel zijn door vijandige Arabieren aangestoken zei Katz. Knessetlid Michael Ben-Ari (Nationale Unie) heeft Minister President Netanyahu opgeroepen “het gehele Shin Bet” (Israel Security Agency) op te dragen de Karmelbrand te onderzoeken. “Het vuur verspreidde zich vanuit drie locaties tegelijk -. Dit maakt brandstichting een zeer waarschijnlijke mogelijkheid. LEGER HELPT BRAND TE BESTRIJDEN NU DEZE NAAR HAÏFA BEWEEGT: – Brandweerlieden in Tirat HaCarmel hebben vrijdag gemeld dat ze er in geslaagd zijn de voortgang van de massale brand die op hun gebied af kwam te stoppen. Wel verplaatst de brand zich verder in de richting van Haïfa. Lokale vrijwilligers zetten zich in in de strijd tegen het vuur. Bovendien zijn de soldaten van de Golani en Kfir brigades opgeroepen om te helpen. De diverse brandbestrijding bemanningen worden 's-nachts bijgestaan door IAF vliegtuigen die het gebied verlichten vanuit het luchtruim boven het vuur en getroffen regio’s om hen een beter beeld te geven. Militaire medici en artsen staan klaar om medische hulp te bieden, terwijl de militaire uitrustingen - met inbegrip van water tanks, tractors, bulldozers en D9 bulldozers - ter beschikking zijn gesteld van de brandbestrijding eenheden. OBAMA BIEDT HULP AAN NU BRAND NOORDEN VAN ISRAEL VERWOEST: – De Amerikaanse president Barack Obama heeft donderdagavond zijn medeleven aangeboden aan de families van de 42 slachtoffers van een massale bosbrand die in het noorden van Israel woedt, en Amerikaanse hulp aangeboden om te helpen de brand te bestrijden. “Ik wil ons diepste medeleven betuigen aan de families en geliefden van al diegenen die stierven als gevolg van de verschrikkelijke bosbranden in het noorden van Israel”, zei Obama tegen de joodse gemeenschap tijdens een Chanoeka ceremonie in het Witte Huis. “Zoals brandweerlieden met hun werk bezig blijven, zullen de Verenigde Staten handelen om onze Israelische vrienden te helpen reageren op deze ramp”, zei hij. GRIEKENLAND EN CYPRUS STUREN BRANDBESTRIJDINGS HELICOPTERS OM ISRAEL TE HELPEN: – Griekenland heeft donderdagavond brandweer helikopters naar Israel. Cyprus heeft zijn enige brandbestrijding helikopter ook gestuurd. Egypte en Turkije hebben ook hulp aangeboden. Minister President Netanyahu heeft bovendien Rusland en Italië gevraagd om Israel te helpen het vuur te bestrijden. Het verzoek weerspiegelt de zorgen dat de vuurzee zich verder zou kunnen verspreiden dan het al heeft gedaan en nog dagen zou kunnen doorgaan. De brandbestrijding diensten van Israël hebben geen brandweervliegtuigen en er zijn slechts ongeveer een dozijn privé brandweervliegtuigen in Israel - en allemaal relatief klein. Dergelijke vliegtuigen zijn niet effectief in de bestrijding van een grote brand. Israel roept grootschalig krachten op, met inbegrip van militairen, om de dodelijke vuurzee te bestrijden.
