Israeli Innovation in Natural Agro Pest Control
28 december 2011, Tevet 2, 5772
by Chana Ya'ar

Israeli Innovation in Natural Pest ControlThere are many reasons for the terrific taste of Israel's fresh produce, all of which have contributed to the income won by the export of colorful,, tasty fruits and vegetables to European and even North American markets year round.

The latest innovation by Israeli scientists at the Ministry of Agriculture may now add another reason for those who care about their health to consider importing fresh produce from the Jewish State -- or those who grow produce to consult with Israel about its technology.

Israeli scientists have just developed an environmentally-friendly pest control technology that uses edible oil to repel disease, insects, fungi and agricultural pests. Moreover, it has also been found to be effective in the early prevention of disease in plants, scientists say, making it useful in preventing future diseases and lesions before the plant is attacked.

The lead scientist in the study was Dr. Shmuel Gan-Mor of the Engineering Institute in the Agricultural Research Administration (Volcani) of the Ministry of Agriculture. Gan-Mor successfully produced an emulsion made of edible oil intended for spraying on crops of various kinds, as a replacement for chemical pesticides. Some of the crops that were seen to benefit from the treatment included tomatoes, zuccinis, peppers and others.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/226687#.Tv2z1tWvkVp

The raw material used in the project to produce the spray emulsion was actually a relatively cheap oil -- costing only about a dollar per liter. Moreover, high quantities were not required, according to the scientists involved in the study, must like those of pesticides, due to its potency.

Gan-Mor found that the emulsion was effective in combating diseases, insects, fungi and agricultural pests such as mites, Sternorrhyncha, powdery mildew and more. Moreover, the emulsion was also found to be effective in the early prevention of disease in plants, and therefore could be used to prevent future diseases and lesions before the plant is attacked. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/150191#.Tv2zTtWvkVp

Besides being a solution that is friendly to the environment and to man, the emulsion has many advantages compared to ordinary sprays, the Ministry noted in a statement. It keeps well at room temperature and does not require added preservatives, unlike other pesticides.

It is also extremely cost-effective due to its low price -- the oil came at a cost of about a dollar per liter -- and high quantities were not required due to the potency of the emulsion. "The success of its pest control effect lasts the whole season and insects do not develop resistance to the emulsion as is the case for other sprays," the Ministry noted.

In addition, "The emulsion does not contain traces of pesticides, is safe for use and does not require 'waiting days' before harvesting."

Israeli Research Could Lead to Breakthrough in Autism Diagnosis

29 juli 2011, Tammuz 27, 5771
by Elad Benari

The results of new research by scientists at the Weizmann Institute could lead to the development of tools for early diagnosis of Autism in children.

The biological causes of autism are still not understood, and a diagnosis of autism is only possible after age three or four. But the Weizmann research, which recently appeared in the Neuron science magazine, has found, for the first time, a method that can accurately identify a biological sign of autism in very young toddlers.

By scanning the brain activity of sleeping children, the scientists discovered that the autistic brains exhibited significantly weaker synchronization between brain areas tied to language and communication, compared to that of non-autistic children.

Along with scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science, the team also included researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, San Diego.

“Identifying biological signs of autism has been a major goal for many scientists around the world, both because they may allow early diagnosis, and because they can provide researchers with important clues about the causes and development of the disorder,” said postdoctoral fellow Dr. Ilan Dinstein, a member of the group of Prof. Rafael Malach who headed this study in the Weizmann Institute’s Neurobiology Department.

Many scientists believe that faulty lines of communication between different parts of the brain are involved in the spectrum of autism disorders but there has been no way to observe this in very young children, who are unable to lie still inside an fMRI scanner while they are awake.

The work by Malach’s group pointed to a solution to this problem. Their studies had shown that even during sleep, the brain does not actually switch off. Rather, the electrical activity of the brain cells switches over to spontaneous fluctuation. These fluctuations are coordinated across the two hemispheres of the brain such that each point on the left is synchronized with its corresponding point in the right hemisphere.

In sleeping autistic toddlers, the fMRI scans showed lowered levels of synchronization between the left and right brain areas known to be involved in language and communication. This pattern was not seen either in children with normal development or in those with delayed language development who were not autistic.

The researchers found that this synchronization was strongly tied to the autistic child’s ability to communicate: The weaker the synchronization, the more severe were the symptoms of autism. On the basis of the scans, the scientists were able to identify 70% of the autistic children between the ages of one and three.

“This biological measurement could help diagnose autism at a very early stage,” said Dinstein. “The goal for the near future is to find additional markers that can improve the accuracy and the reliability of the diagnosis.”

Sunday Night Anti-Obama Protest: Israel Will not Commit Suicide
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
22 mei 2011, lyar 18, 5771

The “My Israel” movement is staging a rally opposite the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv Sunday evening under the banner “Israel will not commit suicide,” referring to the 1949-67 “Auschwitz borders” that U.S. President Barack Obama wants to impose on Israel.

Demonstrators will wear nooses around their necks to symbolize their opposition to shrinking Israel to what Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said are ”indefensible borders" for the sake of creating a Palestinian Authority country in its place.

The protest also is the first ‘Facebook protest” in which people can participate online.

'My Israel' official Ayelet Shaked told Israel National News, “Prime Minister Netanyahu presented clear opposition to Obama’s borders but needs support from the people. We want to strengthen him and show him that the people are behind him.”

She also said that no one has adequately explained to President Obama that the idea of five million foreign Arabs flooding Israel, as demanded by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, has unified all of Israel against the proposal.

“The unprecedented demand by President Obama to grant a country to Hamas, one of the supporters of Bin Laden at the same time Obama ordered him to be killed, is equivalent to asking Israel to commit suicide,” Shaked said.

“Millions of foreign Arabs would be placed in Kfar Saba [in the northern metropolitan Tel Aviv region]. Along with surrendering areas near Ben Gurion Airport, missiles would fall on the entire central region."

She declared that Obama’s proposal should not be presented to any country and "certainly not to a friend like Israel.”

Shaked concluded, “There are those who support concessions and there are those who do not, but Israelis have absolutely made it known that no one is prepared to commit suicide.”

Arab Mobs Attack Israel on All Fronts

  • Al-Jazeera: 20,000 Syrians attempt to enter Israel. Hundreds hurl rocks across border from Lebanon Palestinians attempt to infiltrate Israel from Gaza.

Jerusalem, May 15 – Tens of thousands of Arab protesters marking Palestinian Naqba Day (the day of the catastrophe) have marched on Israel, from Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank.

The Israel Defense Forces sealed off parts of the Golan Heights with reports suggesting Syrians managed to cross into Israel.

In Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of Hamas in Gaza, told thousands of worshippers to pray for an end to Israel this morning.

"Palestinians mark the Naqba with great hope of bringing to an end the Zionist project in Palestine," Haniyeh told 10,000 people at Gaza City's al-Omari, the AP reported via The Jerusalem Post.

Palestinian demonstrators attempted to cross into Israel from Gaza. Similar incidents were reported in the West Bank, with Qalandia being the main hub for attacks on Israeli targets.

As many as 1,000 busloads of Lebanese and Palestinians living in Lebanon descended on the Israeli frontier where mobs began hurling rocks over the border.

Massive demonstrations also turned into fiery riots over the weekend in East Jerusalem in areas such as Issawiya, Ras al-Amoud, Beit Hanina and Silwan. People threw rocks and torched cars.

“It was chaos,” said Garrett Khoury, an American student at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University who was a bystander in Issawiya on Saturday.

“People were confronting the police along the road. About 500 people were gathered and they were firing bottle rockets and lighting tires on fire, even pouring oil on the road and lighting it on fire,” Khoury added.

Soldiers and officers were given “specific orders” to avoid using live fire, the International Herald Tribune reported.

Meanwhile, a suspected terror attack occurred this morning when a 22-year old Arab Israel from Kfar Qasim, near the Israeli-West Bank border, drove his truck into traffic this morning near an elementary school. He killed Aviv Morag, a 29-year old from Givatayim, near Tel Aviv, and injured others.

Iran-backed Hamas is a terrorist organization that has controlled Gaza since 2007 and whose mission is to “kill the Jews” and praises Osama bin Laden as a “holy warrior.”

Haniyeh’s call for Israel’s destruction came less than two weeks after Hamas joined with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party to create a Palestinian government.

One Jew, Eleven Arabs Reported Dead in Arab Attacks

by Gil Ronen
16 mei 2011, Iyar 12, 5771

According to unofficial reports, six Arabs were killed in clashes with Israeli forces on on the Lebanese border Sunday. Four others were killed in an incident on the Syrian border, and one in Gaza, as Arabs protested the consequences of their failure to annihilate Israel in 1948.

In Tel Aviv, an Israeli man, 29-year-old Aviv Morag, was killed in what is believed to have been a terror attack by an Arab truck driver.

The IDF has yet to officially confirm any of the deaths. It confirmed that 3 IDF officers and ten IDF soldiers were injured.

According to the IDF, several riots broke out in various locations over the course of the day, causing “friction” between Israeli security forces, rioters and inciters:

Northern Region: During the midday hours, hundreds of Syrian rioters infiltrated the Israeli-Syrian border into the Druze village of Majdal Shams. In the center of the village, they rioted violently against IDF forces. “In an attempt to turn the rioters back to Syria, forces fired selectively towards rioters who were targeting security infrastructure and some were injured as a result,” the IDF stated.

Along the Lebanese border, several rioters attempted to breach the border fence and to infiltrate into Israeli territory. “IDF forces responded by firing warning shots,” according to the IDF Spokesman’s Unit.

IDF forces and Israel Police forces are currently operating to restore order in these locations.

The IDF said that it “sees the governments of Syria and Lebanon as responsible for any violence or provocation towards Israel that emanates from their respective territories.”

Central Region: Multiple violent riots broke out in several locations throughout Judea and Samaria. These riots included rock hurling, the throwing of firebombs and the burning of tires.

North of Jerusalem, at Kalandiya, approximately 600 Arabs are rioting violently. During this riot, rocks and firebombs were hurled at security forces, who have been responding with riot dispersal means.

The IDF noted that “throughout the day there have been several incidents during which rioters have been seen hiding behind ambulances for cover while hurling rocks at security forces. IDF forces have been responding with riot dispersal means to contain these riots and thus far have been persistent in their efforts.”

Southern Region: Riots have taken place at several sites in Gaza, where hundreds of Muslim rioters hurled rocks at IDF forces. Rioters arrived at a humanitarian aid crossing and caused damage to its structures. Soldiers fired in a controlled manner in their direction of the leading rioters, aiming at their legs, in order to disperse them and prevent them from entering Israeli territory. A number of rioters were injured as a result.

In addition, during the afternoon hours IDF forces identified a suspect planting an explosive device along the security fence in northern Gaza. IDF soldiers fired towards the suspect, identifying a hit.

Terrorist organizations are constantly operating with the objective to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and have previously attempted to execute terrorist activities near the various crossings carrying humanitarian aid into Gaza.

IDF Battles Hundreds of Syrian Arabs in Golan; One Dead
May 15 '11, Iyar 11, 5771
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

At least one person was killed and dozens were wounded as IDF soldiers try to beat back nearly 1,000 Syrian Arabs who called themselves "Palestinians" and invaded the Golan Heights Sunday during Nakba Day protests. Syrian troops at the border did not prevent the infiltration.

Analysts had predicted the possibility, suggesting that Damascus would allow the crossings to draw the populace's attention and participation away from the ongoing rebellion in the country and the regime's harsh crackdown on civilian protestors.

The casualty was identified as an Israeli citizen, and one other person was killed on the Syrian side of the border. Three others reportedly were killed on the Israeli side, but there has been no official confirmation.

The Syrians reached the Druze town of Majdal Shams, located near the border and on the road to the Hermon Mountain range.

Dozens of ambulances have been dispatched as the IDF uses tear gas and live fire as it tries to force the Syrians back across the border.

The government has not explained how and where the Syrians were able to cross the border, but they may have marched on an area that is off limits because of the presence of land mines from the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

At the same time of the massive infiltration into the Golan Heights, Syrian soldiers a shot and killed a women and wounded five others, including  a Lebanese soldier, during a protest at a Lebanese border village against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Hundreds of Syrian Arabs have crossed into Lebanon to flee the violence from Assad’s security forces who already have killed nearly 800 demonstrators.

The Naharanet website in Lebanese reported that an armed Syrian plainclothes officer waded across a river at the border towards a Lebanese village but was turned back by Lebanese civilians.

Israelis Called to Wave Israeli Flags Proudly on Nakba Day
May 13 2011, Iyar 9, 5771
by Elad Benari

As Palestinian Authority Arabs prepare public demonstrations to mark the ‘Nakba Day’ (literally the "catastrophe", which is how they characterize the Gregorian date of the establishment of the State of Israel) on Sunday, Jews in Israel are planning a Zionist response to the planned activities.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/144075

After all, they say, had the state been established even earlier, the real catastrophe of 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust who had nowhere to escape, would have been avoided.

Intefatigable Shomron Mayor Gershon Mesika is calling on Israeli citizens to fly Israeli flags on their vehicles and homes, as well as post pictures of the Israeli on their Facebook accounts this coming Sunday.

Mesika made the appeal in a personal letter he wrote to Samaria residents over the weekend. On Thursday, the Samaria Residents’ Council began to distribute Mesika’s message across the country, both among residents of local communities in Judea and Samaria, as well as in other local councils across Israel. Branches of The Land of Israel Task Force in Rehovot and Haifa, as well as the National Jewish Staff in Tel Aviv joined in the effort to spread the message as well.

Activists from the Samaria Residents’ Council plan to stand at major intersections throughout the country on Sunday and hand out Israeli flags to drivers.

Mesika’s letter reads as follows:

This Sunday, we will all raise with pride the flag of Israel.

'Nakba Day' is translated into Hebrew as Yom Hashoah [Holocaust Remembrance Day –ed.]. This is how the ‘Palestinian’ Authority leadership has chosen to refer to the establishment of Israel. Indeed, it is not surprising, since at the head of that terror authority is Holocaust denier Abu-Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas –ed.].

This year the Authority is trying to intensify the events of that day, as a propaganda step on the way to their one-side declaration of a state in September.

The hysteria which the PA and its PR people from the far left are trying to inflict on the citizens of Israel is nothing but a balloon filled with hot air.

They too know very well that according to international law, only whoever is controlling an area can establish a state, and to our delight Israel is the one controlling it. Those PR people who are trying to frighten the public in Israel remember well that the UN already voted in 1988 in favour of the establishment of a ‘Palestinian’ state (by a majority of 104 against 2) and Arafat even officially declared it. All this had no meaning since Israel controls most of Judea and Samaria, the cradle of the Jewish people, and protects the whole country from there. (editor's note: the high ground of Judea and Samaria overlooks the entire coast of Israel, its most populated urban area, which, if in other hands, would make this part of Israel vulnerable to primitive rockets).

On Sunday, we will all raise the Israeli flag everywhere: on cars, on our homes and on our Facebook accounts.

Hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens in cities across the country will raise the flag along with us.

We will raise the flag proudly, and say to the world: Am Yisrael Chai [the people of Israel live].”

Israel's Security Forces Deploy For Nakba Events
May 13 2011, Iyar 9, 5771
by Gavriel Queenann

Public Security Minister Yitzhack Aharonovitch said Thursday some Muslim's would be denied access to the Temple Mount on Friday, Israel Radio reports.

The restrictions, typically imposed on Muslim males under 50, is commonly employed when heightened tensions lead Israel's police to believe violence may erupt.

Aharonovitch told Israel Radio police would "thin out the number of worshipers at the Temple Mount," due to police intelligence estimates citing a likelihood of prelude demonstrations to Sunday's expected "Nakba Day" protests.

"Nakba," or "catastrophe," is the Arab reference for the creation of Israel, which occured on May 15 on the secular calender. Israel celebrated the 63rd anniversary of its creation on Tuesday, in accordance with the Hebrew calendar.

Reinforced police and border guard units equipped with riot gear are being deployed in eastern Jerusalem, the Old City, and the Temple Mount to maintain order.

Activists behind a website called "The Third Intifada" have called for a new uprising, which would see thousands of Palestinian refugees march towards homes which they fled from or were forced out of when Israel was created in 1948 on Palestinian land.

While PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas has publicly ruled out a Third Intifada, Fatah and Hamas have reportedly created a joint committee to coordinate Nakba Day demonstrations.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/143648

Arabs claiming roots in Israel are also expected to stage rallies and demonstrations in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. The IDF Northern Command has been put on alert as demonstrations are expected on the Israel-Lebanon Border.

Northern Command officers also warned UNIFIL this week there would be severe consequences if demonstrators try to damage the border fence between Israel and Lebanon.

“We respect people’s right to protest, but we will not tolerate damage caused to infrastructure, like the border fence,” a Northern Command spokesperson said.

IDF troops are also deploying in large numbers in Judea and Samaria on Friday, amid expectations that massive demonstrations will break out on both fronts as a build up to May 15 demonstrations.  http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/144075

The IDF began reinforcing troops in Judea and Samaria amid reports there may be marches intended to breach the security perimeters of Jewish settlements.

Expected hotspots in Judea and Samaria include the Kalandiya Checkpoint outside of Jerusalem, near the Ofer Prison off Road 443, Jalazoon near Beit El, as well as Nablus (Schem), Tulkarm and Ramallah.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/144093

The demonstrations are expected to include stone-throwing and Molotov cocktails, but not firearms, according to security sources.

Hevron: Armed Arabs 100 Meters from Hadassah House
May 13 2011, Iyar 9, 5771
by Gil Ronen

"Nakba Day" events were off to an early start in Hevron Friday after the Muslim prayers, and tension in the ancient city mounted as the Sabbath approached.

Local Jews reported that armed Arabs from the Palestinian Authority's paramilitary police force could be seen on Shalala Street, 100 meters from Hadassah House - in violation of the signed agreements between Israel and the PA.

An Arab procession could be heard nearing the Jewish community at Hadassah House around 3:00 P.M. and "very large" IDF forces streamed into the area, according to David Wilder, a Jewish community leader.

The IDF did not appear to have a problem with the PA police presence near the Jewish concentration. Wilder said that the IDF preferred to allow the PA's paramilitary ("police") force to handle the crowd rather than engage the Arabs itself.

Local Jews are more worried about the PA police, however, than about the procession they came to stop.

"The PA has signed a pact with Hamas," Wilder told Arutz Sheva, "and now they are letting terrorists with guns mill about behind Beit Hadassah. I am not worried about the masses armed with rocks, but terrorists with guns are a different matter."

He reported seeing several PA police vehicles and a group of about 15 policemen who advanced on foot.
