IDF Base: 1,500 Tank Shells Stolen
20 januari 2012, Tevet 25, 5772
by Gil Ronen
Fifteen hundred tank shells were stolen from an IDF munitions base in southern Israel.
A senior officer in Southern Command said that the shells could reach terror organizations. Some of the shells may have been smuggled to the Sinai Peninsula and then transferred to terrorists inside Gaza. The Investigative Military Police is looking into the possibility that soldiers inside the base assisted the thieves.
The theft was discovered during an inventory check of ammunition last week. A serious shortage of shells was discovered, and after a second count was held, the scale of the theft became apparent.
Military sources said that a gang of Arab metal thieves that operates in the area is apparently behind the theft. The Arabs apparently studied the security arrangements at the base and were able to sneak in and out undetected numerous times, taking a large number of shells with them each time.
A senior source in the Southern Command said that the Arab gangs in the Negev have been stepping up their attacks on IDF bases as the IDF has been tightening its hold on the Israel-Egypt border and as construction of the security barrier along the border has progressed.
"It started from theft of bullets from firing ranges, proceeded to theft of parts of fences and has now reached the theft of expensive and dangerous ammunition. Security in all of the southern bases needs to be rethought."
IDF Kills Two Terrorists near Gaza Belt Kibbutz
18 januari 2012, Tevet 23, 5772
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Israeli aircraft and tanks struck a terrorist cell attempting to bury bombs at the Gaza security fence near a kibbutz Wednesday morning, killing at least two terrorists.
Hamas confiremd the kill. Aircraft fired four missiles on the cell, while tanks fired artillery shells. One of the cell's bombs exploded, and no Israeli soldiers were injured. Hamas claimed that other terroists at the scene are engaged in a gunfight with IDF soldiers, but there has been no confirmation from the army, and Hamas information often is propaganda without substantiation.
Terrorists in Hamas-ruled Gaza have been staging almost daily attempts to attack Israeli soldiers and civilians, but their failure has kept the incidents out of mainstream media headlines.
Last week, two mortar shells or rockets were fired on the western Negev, causing no damage or injuries.
Wednesday’s attempt took place at the fence several hundred yards from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where the army maintains a small base. Kibbutz farmers work the fields between the army outpost and the security fence.
A resident who lives about two miles from the scene told Arutz Sheva, "There was a series of explosions, and I felt the windows shaking. I went outside and saw clouds of black smoke. It reminded me of the Cast Lead Operation," which was a three-week counterterrroist maneuver three years ago aimed at ending attacks on Israelis.
Afternoon Naps Shattered by Rocket Attack on Southern Israel
29 december 2011, Tevet 3, 5772
by Chana Ya'ar
Babies and toddlers asleep for their afternoon naps were rudely awakened and snatched from their beds as the Color Red rocket alert siren blared its warning Thursday for a second time.
Palestinian Authority Arab terrorists in northern Gaza aimed their Qassam rocket attack on Jewish communities in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council district.
The area is located within the 10-kilometer range of the short-range missiles that have only a primitive directional mechanism The rocket exploded in an open field, and reportedly caused no property damage.
No one was physically injured, although as usual, those who suffer with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) had symptoms triggered by the sudden blare of the siren and the need to race for cover.
People in the Eshkol Regional Council district were forced to make detours to safe spaces and bomb shelters on their way to work and school earlier in the day as they returned from their Chanukah vacations, when Gaza terrorists launched the first Qassam attack of the day on the region. As in the afternoon, the rocke exploded in an open area; no one was physically injured and no property damage was reported.
Wednesday a similar attempt by Gaza terrorists resulted in a failed effort -- the rocket did not explode on impact. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/151166#.Tv2iXNWvkVq
There were also attacks on Sunday and Monday this week as well.

Residents of the Gaza Belt area -- the section of southern Israel within the 10-kilometer range -- have only 15 seconds within which to find a space space or reach their designated bomb shelter before a rocket fired from Gaza makes impact.
An IDF report, however, contends that hundreds of thousands of residents in southern Israel have little or no access to fortified spaces.
More than one million Israelis are currently exposed to the daily threat of short, medium and long-range rocket and missile attacks from Gaza.

Parents and school children in southern Israel returned from Chanukah vacation Thursday morning to their normal daily routine of traveling to work, walking to school -- and racing to safety from rocket attacks after hearing the sounds of the Color Red rocket alert siren.
The first attack of the day, a short-range Qassam fired as usual by Palestinian Authority Arab terrorists in Gaza, was aimed at the Jewish communities in the Eshkol Regional Council district.
It exploded in an open area at about 7:35 a.m., just as children should have been walking to school, and their parents heading off to work.
Instead, they were racing to safe rooms and bomb shelters, and waiting for the "all clear" to let them know whether security forces had figured out where the missile had landed, and whether any more were on the way.
No physical injuries or property damage was reported in the early morning attack, although the blare of the Color Red siren triggered trauma responses in those who suffer from anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to past attacks.

Yesterday a Qassam rocket failed to explode upon reaching its destination in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council district. Similar rocket fire was reported Sunday and Monday, as well as over the Sabbath and a number of days last week.
Such attacks have again become the near-daily affairs that led to the three-week Cast Lead counter terrorism mini war against the Hamas terrorist rulers of Gaza, launched three years ago this week.
Although the IDF responds to each and every attack with retaliatory air strikes, there appears to be little that Israel can do to stem the terrorist rocket fire, possibly due to international diplomatic constraints. Meanwhile, the danger is escalating; last week the Palestinian Authority's rival Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist factions signed an historic agreement in Cairo to unite under the banner of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
IAF aircraft targeted shortly after midnight (Israel time) a terrorist squad that fired a Kassam rocket at Israel from southern Gaza.
According to the IDF Spokesperson, a hit was confirmed.
Just prior to the IAF attack, terrorists fired three rockets from Gaza at southern Israel. Two of the rockets exploded in open areas in the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council. The third rocket exploded in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council.
In both cases there were no reports of physical injuries or damage.
“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers, and will continue to operate with strength and determination against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel,” the IDF said in a statement. “The Hamas terror organization is solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from Gaza.”
Rockets and missiles continued to be fired at Israel throughout the day on Sunday, despite a supposed ceasefire declared by Islamic Jihad terrorists on Sunday morning.

Virtually every previous Gaza ceasefire has broken down, sometimes within hours and no longer than within several weeks.
IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai clarified earlier in the day that the army “wasn't waiting for a decision” when terrorists agreed to a ceasefire. He told reporters that IDF Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz, has ordered the military to prepare a variety of responses to the rocket and mortar attacks, in answer to a request by the government.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday that there is no ceasefire in the South and that the IDF is protecting Israel's citizens and killing the terrorists who fire rockets.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet meeting, which was held in Tzfat, Netanyahu added that the terrorists would pay "an even higher price than they did until now," until the missile fire ceases.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet meeting, which was held in Tzfat, Netanyahu added that the terrorists would pay "an even higher price than they did until now," until the missile fire ceases.
The IDF, meanwhile, said it was "not waiting" for terrorists to decide whether they want a ceasefire or not. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/149227#.TrU2VbKvkVo
At least 39 rockets and mortars were fired at southern Israel over the weekend, hitting Gan Yavneh, Ashdod and the communities of the Eshkol Regional Authority. One person was killed and about 20 were hurt. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/149211#.TrU4p7KvkVp
Islamic Jihad accepts conditional ceasefire
Islamic Jihad terrorists have accepted an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire on condition that Israel does not continue to strike terror targets. Virtually every previous Gaza ceasefire has broken down, sometimes within hours and no longer than within several weeks.
The announcement came three hours after a halt in rocket and mortar shell attacks on Israel. The IDF also has held its fire since the early morning attacks. One missile exploded in an athletic field, but no one was wounded.
One Ashkelon resident was killed by a Grad rocket in an attack Saturday night, and dozens of others suffered injuries and shock.
Islamic Jihad and other terrorist factions earlier Sunday morning rejected the Egyptian initiative, while the Ramallah-based part of the Palestinian Authority warned that failure to do so would give “Israel a pretext to wage a new war on Gaza and to tighten the siege.”
The Al-Quds Brigade of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad had vowed revenge for Israeli counterterrorist attacks they described as
a crime aimed to spoil the joyfulness after the prisoner swap deal which secured freedom for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life (terms) in Israel.
The Ayman Juda Brigades, part of the Al-Aqsa Brigades that is allied with Fatah, headed by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, also threatened that “the coming hours will see all Palestinian factions retaliating to the crime the Zionists committed against the al-Quds Brigades fighters.”
The de facto Hamas regime in Gaza did not take responsibility for the rocket attacks but also did not try to prevent them. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri accused Israel of a "serious escalation against our people."

The foreign affairs editor for Sky News has written a blog piece called "Palestine – ‘Occupation Incorporated'," which paints a rosy picture of the region supposedly suffering under a cruel Israel occupation and siege.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/138671#.ToT0JIKo0ZI
According to the journalist, Tim Marshall, “Palestinians are among the most foreign aid funded people in the world and the place is awash with money.”
Marshall says that NGO workers enjoy being assigned to the Palestinian Authority because, contrary to public perception, the PA territories are relatively safe and comfortable:
“Palestine is the best-kept secret in the aid industry,” a medical NGO worker recently told This Week In Palestine, “People need field experience and Palestine sounds cool and dangerous because it can be described as a war zone, but in reality it’s quite safe and has all the comforts that internationals want."
Journalists, too, like the material comforts of the “besieged” and “occupied” areas, including expensive fine dining in Gaza. Writes Marshall:
“At any moment the West Bank could explode, indeed there are scenarios you can paint which suggest violence this September after the declaration, or non-declaration, of statehood. But Palestine remains a friendly place, welcoming, hospitable, full of air con, hi-fi, wi-fi and wine. Journalists also take advantage of this state of affairs, writing of the poverty and suffering of Gaza for example, before retiring to very expensive sea front hotels after an excellent dinner in one of the expensive fish restaurants.”
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/138860#.ToT0TIKo0ZI
The foreign NGOs pour billions of dollars into the local economy and employ Arab residents who have become professional refugees:
“The NGOs do fine work alleviating suffering, helping projects with expertise etc, but they also recruit the best of the local talent and take advantage of their charitable status to get tax breaks.
“No Palestinian business can compete with NGOs which routinely triple what a local firm would pay. Many NGOs fork out ‘danger money’ and even ‘hardship payments’ to both local and international staff which further undermines the local private businesses. So the NGOs get the brightest and the highest paid, and the private firms get the rest but without the tax exemptions.”
Marshall draws specific attention to UNRWA, the UN body responsible for Palestinian “refugees”:
“This underlying economic problem is further complicated by the fact that UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees stipulates that not only are the Palestinians who fled their homes in 1948 refugees, but so are their sons and daughters grandsons and granddaughters, great grandsons and granddaughters and so on into the future. In Palestine many people are born refugees. There are people who have a vested interest in this continuing.”

"There is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza." So states categorically Mathilde Redmatn, the deputy director of the Red Cross in the Gaza Strip.
"If you go to the supermarket, there are products,” she said, as reported on the IDF website. “There are restaurants and a nice beach. The problem is mainly in maintenance of infrastructure and in access to certain goods such as concrete. Israel has the legitimate right to protect [its] civilian population, this right should be balanced with the right of 1.5 million people living in the Gaza Strip.”
She acknowledged that Israel has eased its closure on Gaza and has partially lifted export bans.
"Rocket fire from the Gaza Strip is against international law because it is directed at civilians," the Red Cross official said. "We conduct confidential or bilateral dialogue with Hamas on the matter. As time passes, the dialogue also develops."
She said that the Red Cross has also asked to meet with captive soldier Gilad Shalit: "When a person's freedom is taken away, he deserves at least contact with his family. We will continue to ask but we do not have the capability to force anything on Hamas. Hamas' refusal is based on security reasons. Hamas is afraid of the IDF's advanced technological capabilities and believes that allowing contact will lead to the location of Gilad."

Thousands of residents of southern Israel spent Shabbat in bomb shelters, as Hamas terrorists from Gaza continued firing rockets at Israeli targets in the Negev. Since Thursday, Arab terrorists have fired over 100 mortar shells and Kassam rockets at Israeli targets, with fifty fired since early Saturday.
The rockets hit not only areas near the border, but areas further inside Israel, including the Ashkelon area. Four Grad-style Katyusha rockets hit areas near the city, but there were no injuries or damage reported. However, several people were hospitalized for shock, and as of Saturday night, three were still in the hospital.
Damage was reported in several towns, and major damage was reported in a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, where a water pipe was destroyed. Residents said that they felt that the days of Operation Cast Lead, when Hamas fired hundreds of rockets at Israeli civilians, had returned.
Other cities further inside Israel were also hit, with Ofakim absorbing hits from three Grad rockets. One rocket hit very close to a school, and city officials said that there would have been many injuries had the rocket hit when classes were in session.
The Iron Dome system registered a number of successes, intercepting several rockets aimed for Be'ersheva, Ofakim and Be'ersheva. The system has intercepted eight rockets since Thursday.
Meanwhile, Israel has struck back hard at Hamas terrorist targets in Gaza. Overnight Friday, IDF planes targeted several terror activity sites in Gaza, with precise targeting of several terror gangs who were in the midst of preparing to fire more rockets at Israel. The IDF said that fifteen terrorists had been eliminated. Among them was a senior Hamas operative in the southern Gaza Strip, Tayser Abu Snima, along with two additional Hamas operatives. Snima held several major roles in the military wing of Hamas and was involved in many terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers. Most recently, he was in charge of executing a terror attack from Sinai, firing rockets at the city of Eilat. In addition, the IDF said, Snima was also directly involved in the kidnapping of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.
Israeli officials said that Hamas has asked for a ceasefire several times, and the Hamas website said that the terror group had declared a unilateral ceasefire on Thursday night. The terror group blamed the subsequent rockets on outside terror groups, saying that they were responding to Israeli attacks.
Meanwhile, the youth injured in the rocket attack on a school bus near Ashkelon on Thursday, Daniel Viflic, remained in critical condition. Doctors are continuing to work to save his life, and said that the next 24 hours would be “crucial.” The public was asked to continued to pray for Rafael Daniel Aryeh ben Tamar.
Ten Years Under Rocket Fire
by Maayana Miskin
15 april 2011, Nissan 11, 5771
On April 16, 2001, Gaza terrorists fired the first rocket at southern Israel, aiming for the town of Sderot. On the Sabbath, ten years will have passed since that day. Rocket fire remains a serious concern in southern towns, which were hit by a barrage of rockets and mortar shells as recently as last week.
“At that time, everyone was sure it was a one-time event, a red line that nobody would think to cross again,” former Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said this week in an interview with the Maariv/Nrg. “Nobody imagined ten years of missile terrorism.”
Terrorists began with short-range rockets produced in Gaza, known as “Kassams.” In the first years, rockets hit with no warning. Even after the installation of the “Color Red” rocket warning system, residents had at most 15 seconds to run for shelter, and often had significantly less time.
Several people were killed by the rockets in Sderot alone, among them four children. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/115558
Others were badly wounded, including an eight-year-old boy who lost a leg. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/125194
Prior to the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 and the expulsion of Jews from the area, many rocket attacks targeted Jewish communities in Gush Katif. The Gaza belt was hit by rockets more than 280 times in 2004, and 170 times in 2005, but did not face daily attacks.
Following the expulsion, however, terrorists began to strike far more frequently, hitting the region with 946 rockets in 2006, and 2,048 in 2008. After the Hamas takeover of 2007, when United Nations observers fled the border, Hamas managed to smuggle in more advanced medium-range rockets and expand its attacks beyond Sderot and the Gaza belt. Cities such as Ashkelon, Be'er Sheva, Ashdod and Ofakim all fell victim to rockets as well.
The “Cast Lead” counterterror operation, in which Israel destroyed much of Hamas' infrastructure and weapons supplies, and killed an estimated 700 Hamas terrorists, led to a temporary reprieve. However, Hamas recently went on the offensive again, firing Grad rockets on Netivot, Ofakim, Be'er Sheva and Ashkelon.

“In retrospect, that [first] Kassam was a clear sign that Hamas was going to look for a fight with Israel,” former Defense Minister Amir Peretz, a resident of Sderot, told Maariv. “In the beginning, we did not treat the Kassam as something that could pose a threat or a danger. We treated it as an attempt by the Palestinians to threaten us, nothing more.”
Taliban pays 7.000 USD for each child suicide bomber
ivarfjeld.wordpress.com
16 april 2011, Nissan 12, 5771
The going price for child bombers was 7,000 to 14,000 USD. Thats huge sums in Pakistan. The price depends on how quickly the bomber is needed and how close the child is expected to get to the target».
This is how Hamas educates their children in Gaza to honor god. Here we see 'Holy warriors' that loves money more than their own children. More worse than Radical Islam, I guess sinful man can never get.
Simon Wiesenthal Centre (SWC) director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, expressed concern at «reports from the Washington Times of 2 July, corroborated by other sources, that point to the Taliban buying children as young as seven to serve as suicide bombers in the growing spate of attacks against Pakistani, Afghan and U.S. targets».
Samuels noted that, «”Recruitment or kidnapping of, and trafficking in child-soldiers, especially in Africa, has been an agenda item for both the UNHCHR and UNICEF. The brainwashing of pre-adolescents for suicide bombings is now a new threshold in that horror scenario, justified in the Washington Times article by a redeemed Afghan mujahadin, who explained that, ‘there is a different cultural perspective here about the age at which a boy becomes a man«.
«While our Centre expresses solidarity with the victims of suicide terrorism, in Pakistan and in every other country targeted by this scourge, the fungibility of baby-bombers as a Jihadist sales commodity must be condemned as a desecration of every law, religion or morality. It is a travesty of the human condition itself» concluded Samuels.

My comment:
This message from SWC does not need any comment. Suicide bombers are bad enough. But child suicide bombers if an evil and barbaric act against humanity.
How to the World deal with this problem?
Well, that you have to deal with the Jihad verses of the Koran it self.
[Sura 5:33]
«The just retribution for those who fight God (Allah) and His messenger (Muhammad), and commit horrendous crimes, is to be killed, or crucified, or to have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or to be banished from the land. This is to humiliate them in this life, then they suffer a far worse retribution in the Hereafter».
Any faithful Muslim is called to kill criple or kill people who do not sumbit to Allah, or would like to believe that the prophet Muhammad is a false prophet.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Ontvoerde Italiaan dood gevonden in Gaza
16 april 2011, Nissan 12, 5771
'Gaza Has Become a Terrorist State'
by Maayana Miskin
8 april 2011, Nissan 4, 5771
Gaza has become a terrorist state, President Shimon Peres said in a meeting with foreign ambassadors. “Hundreds of thousands of mothers and their children in southern Israel cannot sleep at night as a result of the rocket attacks from Gaza,” he said.
The ambassadors hailed from countries represented on the United Nations Security Council, as well as countries in the Middle East.
“Can the United Nations guarantee that terror attacks will not happen again? None of you would give up on the safety and security of your citizens, just as Israel will stand in its own defense,” Peres declared. He tied recent terrorist attacks to international “flotillas” attempting to break Israel's naval blockade of Hamas, saying, “Whoever wants to help Gaza should insist that Gazans stop firing on Israel.”
He also took issue with the UN over Iran, whose head, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has called to destroy Israel. “Why do you permit him to do this while allowing him to continue to be a member?” he asked.
The UN is inherently anti-Israel due to its organization, but Israel is committed to membership nonetheless, Peres added. “We can never benefit from a majority. The blocs in the UN are based on being anti-Israel and we don't have an opportunity for justice. In spite of this we will continue to struggle on and fight for peace.”
Peres' remarks followed a terrorist attack on an Israeli school bus in which one boy was critically wounded. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/143415
Both Britain and the United States condemned the attack on Thursday. British Foreign Secretary William Hague called it “despicable” and “cowardly.”
“I unreservedly condemn today's attack from Gaza on a bus carrying school children in southern Israel,” he said.
A U.S. State Department official said, “We condemn the attack on innocent civilians in southern Israel in the strongest possible terms... As we have reiterated many times, there is no justification for the targetnig of innocent civilians.”
The State Department expressed “deep concern” over the use of an advanced anti-tank missile in the attack, and noted that all countries are obligated to prevent weapons smuggling.
The IDF responded to the attack by hitting several terrorist targets in Gaza, including smuggling tunnels and launch sites. Nine people were killed, eight of them Hamas terrorists. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/143430
Salvo Of 12 Mortar Shells From Gaza Hit Southern Israel
by Gavriel Queenann
8 april 2011, Nissan 4, 5771
Twelve mortar shells fired from northern Gaza landed in open areas in the Eshkol region. No injuries were reported.
Friday's barrage was the first mortar fire since Gaza terror groups declared a unilateral ceasefire, Thursday.
Israel Air Force fighter jets struck a location east of the Gaza city of Khan Yunis earlier Friday. Khan Yunis is regarded as a terror hub by Israeli security officials. The IDF confirmed hits on its intended target.
Sources in Gaza reported three people were killed and others were wounded in the air strike, bringing the death toll in Israel's retaliatory raids to 12. The casualties are believed to be members of a Hamas' Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades cell.
The IDF sorites on Gaza follow Thursday's anti-missile attack on an Israeli school bus that left a teenager critically wounded and barrage of over 45 rockets fired from Gaza into Israel's south. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/143415
IDF tanks also fired on two groups of armed terrorists approaching the Gaza security fence, reporting injuries among the terrorists in each case.
Israel's Iron Dome missile interception system also reportedly intercepted a second rocket fired from Gaza.
Thursday night terror groups in the Gaza Strip attempted to unilaterallly declared a ceasefire in an apparent attempt to stave off IDF retaliation.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Friday morning from the Czech Republic, "Iron Dome's results are impressive - intercepting two missiles, one after the other, is an important success."
Netanyahu also said "We will act even if the defensive measures we have also offensive measures to protect Israeli citizens from rocket attacks from Gaza."
Netanyahu will return to Israel this afternoon.
Feeding the Mouth that Bites: IDF Lets Gaza Imports Continue
by Gil Ronen
25 maart 2011, Adar Bet 19, 5771
The IDF Spokesman's Unit proudly announced Thursday that Israel is continuing to allow supplies into Gaza. "In the shadow of the recent increase in rocket and mortar fire from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, the IDF is continuing to move forward with its broad policy of aiding the civilian population of the Gaza Strip," it said. "The policy is carried out in coordination with the Palestinian Authority, with the help of the international community."
Over the past week, an average of 300 aid trucks entered Gaza per day (as far as Thursday is concerned, that makes about 30 trucks per missile fired at Israel - ed.). The trucks carried a variety of materials, including wheat, gravel and animal feed, among other items.
The goods were transferred into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing, operated by the Ministry of Defense Crossing Authority, instead of the Karni crossing, which was recently closed due to security threats.
In the second half of 2011, it is expected that 450 trucks will enter Gaza daily to meet the import and export needs of the civilian population.
The IDF continues to aid the civilian population of Gaza in construction. Around 19,000 tons of aggregates (gravel used in the construction process to reinforce concrete) have been transferred to Gaza thus far.
Gravel is generally prohibited from being imported into the Gaza Strip due to concerns it will be used by terrorist organizations for the construction of bunkers, for example. However, coordinated deliveries of gravel are permitted for civilian projects only. The projects are funded and monitored by international organizations that operate in Gaza, and are intended for improvements in the areas of education, welfare and housing. Among other things, aggregates are to be used in the construction of hospital wings, residential buildings and schools.

Hamas prohibits import of Israeli-manufactured clothing
Officiëel document uit Ma'an News Agency
The ministry statement included a ban on clothing manufactured in Israel. Merchants would have to apply to the ministry for permission to sell several other items, the statement said.
Ma'an obtained a copy of the list of restricted items manufactured in Israel, including the following:
Require approval
- Home and office furniture
- Plastic products
- Tissues, toilet paper
- Hoses
- Juices, soft drinks
- Chemical products
- Canned beans
- Biscuits, candies
- Packaging materials
The ban and restrictions apply only to goods manufactured in Israel. Government officials said goods produced by other nations would not be subject to the restrictions.
Goods produced in Israel are often easier to import, and face fewer delays and restrictions at the crossings, merchants say.
Gaza's ministry of economy said the measures would be in place "until further notice."

Jerusalem, Dec. 21 – A Qassam rocket fired from Hamas-controlled Gaza landed in Ashkelon today near a kindergarten, injuring a young girl. At least 13 rockets and mortar rounds were launched from Gaza since Sunday (Dec. 19), according to Israeli officials. http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israeli-teen-hurt-as-qassam-strikes-meters-from-ashkelon-kindergarten-1.331779
More than 200 Grad and Qassam rockets and mortar shells have been fired from Gaza this year. Iran-backed Hamas has controlled Gaza since Israel withdrew from the area in 2005.
"The children were arriving at school this morning, at quarter to eight, when the siren blared. There was a code-red warning and everyone panicked and rushed for the safety of the bomb shelters," Aviva Fold, Ashkelon's kindergarten department manager told The Israel Project.
"You can wake up in the morning and feel happy and suddenly within a second everything changes. It is terrible and frightening," Fold added.
Gaza has stepped up its launching of projectiles over the past few weeks. In response, Israel launched pinpoint strikes against terrorists and their infrastructure in order to defend the residents of southern Israel.
There are several reasons for the recent rise in terrorist activity coming from Gaza, according to Ely Karmon, counter-terrorist expert at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel.
"Hamas is in a bind. It is trying to reconstruct Gaza to take more responsibility over the quality of civilian life. Yet there are reports that Iran is providing Hamas with more sophisticated weaponry, including long-range missiles," said Karmon.
"More radical members of Hamas are pushing for increased violence against Israel and Hamas is trying to keep the fire burning to appease those elements. It is very complicated,” he said.
When Israel withdrew from Gaza, Jerusalem hoped that would jump start the peace process and lead to a two-state solution.
One IDF Soldier Dead, 4 Wounded in Gaza Border Fight
by Chana Ya'ar
Jan 9 '11, Shevat 4, 5771
The IDF has identified a 20-year-old sergeant killed in action fighting Hamas terrorists at the Gaza border Friday night as Nadav Rotenberg of Ramot HaShavim.
Another soldier was moderately wounded and three others sustained light injuries in the incident, which appears to have been the result of friendly fire. The troops had identified several terrorists planting explosives near the security fence bordering central Gaza, and countered with mortar fire.
Initial findings of an investigation conducted by GOC Southern Command, Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo and the commander of the Gaza Division, Brig.-Gen. Yossi Bachar, indicated that the soldiers were also hit by mortar fire. It appeared that one of the shells fired by IDF troops had deviated from its path.
An IDF colonel has been appointed to head the team investigating the incident.
Army officials arrived with the news of Nadav’s death on the day of his parents' 26th wedding anniversary, destroying plans for a celebration at their home.
His parents immediately recognized what their arrival meant; the elder Rotenberg is a veteran of the Sayeret Tzanchanim (Airborne Special Ops) a tradition his son had hoped to follow.
An active boy, Rotenberg grew up instead to become a paratrooper, however, after an injury during training nixed his chance to follow in his father’s footsteps.
His mother told reporters Saturday that her son “excelled in everything. That’s why the army wanted to keep him in the paratroopers.”
About a half hour before he set out on the operation in which he lost his life, Natav spoke with his girlfriend, Tal Kimlov, telling her he was on emergency duty, and was sleeping.
“He promised to get back to me… but now he never will,” she mourned.
European MPs: Giving Up Gaza was a Mistake
by Maayana Miskin
Dec 9 '10, Tevet 2, 5771
Dozens of senior parliamentarians from across Europe visited the Gush Katif Museum in Jerusalem during a trip to Israel. They were joined by Minister Ayoub Kara (Likud), and all together, lit Chanukah candles as a gesture of solidarity with the Jewish people.
As they toured the museum, the MPs remarked that Israel's unilateral withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, termed the “Disengagement,” had been a mistake. The one-sided move, which followed years of terrorist attacks, was seen by radical Islamists as a victory for their ideology, they said.
Israeli Jews should build throughout the land, particularly in Judea and Samaria, said Rene Stadtkewitz, Chairman of Germany's Freedom Party. Conceding land does not bring peace, but rather, strengthens terrorists, he said.
The MPs, who recently toured Judea and Samaria, noted that much of Israel is visible from the hills of Judea and Samaria, making a withdrawal from the region particularly dangerous. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/141016
Kara called on Israel to build close relationships with the Mps, members of Europe's “new Right” that supports Israel and worries about extremist Islam. The “new Right” has shared interests with the Jewish people and the state of Israel, he said.
Israel withdrew from Gaza, and forcibly removed thousands of Israeli Jews from their homes in the region, despite having received nothing in return from the Palestinian Authority. After the withdrawal Gaza terrorists increased their rocket and mortar shell attacks on southern Israel, with violence escalating until the Cast Lead counterterror operation of early 2009, which dramatically reduced the frequency of Gaza attacks.
The candles the MPs lit were held by a special menorah made of the spent casings of mortar shells that Gaza terrorists had fired at Israelis living in Gush Katif. The menorah was created by Gideon Rivlin, a Gush Katif resident and father of five who was later murdered in a terrorist attack.
THE LIES THE MEDIA AND NGOS TELL ABOUT GAZA

[All notes below by Tom Gross]
In recent days, the international media, particularly in Europe and the Mideast, has been full of stories about “activist boats sailing to Gaza carrying desperately-needed humanitarian aid and building materials.”
The BBC World Service even led its world news broadcasts with this story at one point over the weekend. (The BBC yesterday boasted that its global news audience has now risen to 220 million persons a week, making it by far the biggest news broadcaster in the world.)
Yet the BBC and other media fail to report on the fancy new restaurants and swimming pools of Gaza, or about the wind surfing competitions on Gaza beaches, or the Strip’s crowded shops and markets.
No, this would spoil their agenda. Playing the manipulative game of the BBC is easy. If we had their vast taxpayer funded resources, we too could produce reports about parts of London, Manchester and Glasgow and make it look as though there is a humanitarian catastrophe throughout the UK. We could produce the same effect by selectively filming seedy parts of Paris and Rome and New York and Los Angeles too.
Of course there is poverty in Gaza. There is poverty in parts of Israel too. (When was the last time a foreign journalist based in Israel left the pampered lounge bars and restaurants of the King David and American Colony hotels in Jerusalem and went to check out the slum-like areas of southern Tel Aviv? Or the hard-hit Negev towns of Netivot or Rahat?)
But the way the BBC and other prominent Western news media are deliberately misleading global audiences and systematically creating the false impression that people are somehow starving in Gaza, and that it is all Israel’s fault, can only serve to increase hatred for the Jewish state – which one suspects was the goal of many of the editors and reporters involved in the first place.

Fear, Mistrust in Gaza as Hamas Hunts Down 'Collaborators'
by Maayana Miskin

A Hamas campaign aimed at rooting out Gaza Arabs who have helped Israel fight terrorism is creating fear and suspicion, locals Arabs say. Several people who spoke to Christian Science Monitor reported an atmosphere of distrust as hundreds of people are arrested for alleged “collaboration.”
“I don't trust anyone anymore,” one merchant reported. Some of the most respected members of Gaza society, including doctors and intellectuals, have been accused of helping Israel, he said. Even members of Hamas have been accused. “If the elite and intellectuals are involved, who else? Who is not involved?” he asked.
A second man said the Hamas regime's campaign has has “a really bad impact on society.” People no longer trust each other, he said, “We don't talk openly with each other.”
Arabs who provide Israel with information in the war on terrorism are considered “collaborators,” and according to Palestinian Authority law, their actions can be punished by death. While the Fatah-led PA in Judea and Samaria has limited itself in recent years to imposing lengthy prison sentences with hard labor on "collaborators," Hamas has carried out death sentences against several men convicted of the offense.
Gaza-based human rights groups have expressed concern over the use of torture to extract confessions. Some Hamas officials have openly admitted to torture, with a jailer telling the Sydney Morning Herald, “We do not practice any torture here. That takes place at the interrogation center, before people are convicted.”
Several of those currently on death row say they are innocent, and have accused Hamas of torturing them during questioning.
In June, the son of a senior Hamas terrorist who secretly provided Israel with counter-terror intelligence was granted asylum in the United States after convincing US officials that he would be hunted down and killed if he were deported to any Arab or Muslim country. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/138360 The man, Mosab Hassan Yousef, has written his story in the book Son of Hamas. Abbas Says ‘No’ to US Freeze Proposal
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
November 21, 2010, Kislev 14, 5771
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday turned down the U.S.-proposed plan for resumed talks with Israel because it does not include a freeze on building Jewish homes in large areas of Jerusalem, populated by Jews, where the PA wants to make the capital of its desired new Arab state.
Abba’s rejection may take Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu off the hook from trying to overcome growing opposition to the plan, which he has not yet presented to the Cabinet for approval.
As of Sunday morning, the government hasn’t addressed the question of whether Cabinet approval would be dependent on Palestinian Authority acceptance of the freeze proposal, government spokesman Mark Regev told Israel National News. He said that the question is moot until a moratorium proposal is formally presented. Abbas' rejection may preclude an action by Israel or, on the other hand, could prompt Israeli approval on the assumption it is irrelevant.
Abbas had been silent about the proposal until Sunday, preferring to let Israel state whether it would accept the idea of a one-time 90-day freeze on all building for Jews in Judea and Samaria.
In exchange, the United States is to provide Israel with more advanced F-35 planes – which are at least two years away from being manufactured – and an American promise to veto any United Nations resolution that would unilaterally recognize the PA as a state, presumably according to Israel’s old borders determined by the 1949 Armistice Line. These are dependent on reaching an agreement within the three month period, according to government sources.
Apparently speaking out of fears that Israel’s acceptance of the proposal would officially leave Jerusalem out of non-negotiable demands by the PA, Abbas said in Cairo, "We will not accept an offer to resume negotiations if the settlement freeze is not comprehensive, in other words it must include Jerusalem.
Chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat set the stage for Abbas’s comments earlier in the day, stating that if Israel were to recognize the Palestinian Authority according to the 1949-1967 ceasefire lines, including the Old City, and the Jerusalem densely populated Jewish neighborhoods of French Hill, Ramot and Gilo, among others, the PA would sign a commitment to relinquish all claims to “historic Palestine” from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. The narrow 1949-1967 lines were termed "Auschwitz borders" by the Israel's late Labor UN ambassador Abba Eban.
Abbas’ rejection comes as U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell was to meet him in Egypt before flying to Jerusalem Monday for talks with Israel officials.
The IDF blasted three terrorist sites in Gaza Friday in response to two rocket attacks earlier in the day. In one attack a Grad rocket was launched at Ofakim -- the first missile attack on the city in almost two years.
Air Force pilots who fired on the terror sites reported direct hits. Arab media reported that six people were injured in the strikes, but did not report their identities or the extent of their wounds.
Experts who examined the terrorist rockets launched Friday found that they contained white phosphorous, a material that is forbidden for use as a weapon in civilian areas under international law. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman instructed Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Meiron Reuven, to file a complaint. The head of the Ashkelon regional authority, Yair Farajun, demanded the UN intervene against Hamas' targetting of civilians in his area of jurisdiction.
“This is another reminder to the international community that residents of southern Israel are forced to live in constant fear of the terrorism that takes place under the auspices of Hamas in Gaza,” Lieberman said.
In addition to the two rockets, Gaza terrorists fired seven mortar shells at Negev communities. The attacks failed to cause injury.
Several rockets and mortar shells fired by Gaza terrorists hit areas within Gaza. No injuries were reported.

United States officials are unfamiliar with the commitments America is allegedly offering Israel in exchange for a ban on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, says investigative journalist David Bedein. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has told his ministers, and the Israeli public, that the U.S. has promised not to pressure Israel for any additional ban on construction in the future in exchange for a three-month building freeze now.
Bedein was in the U.S. last week and met with senior White House officials. He reports that he was surprised to hear them deny the promises reported by Netanyahu. The officials said they had heard of the alleged American commitments in the Israeli media but had not received confirmation from the Obama administration.
Bedein said he has filed an inquiry at the Prime Minister's Office regarding what he heard but has not yet received a response.
Meanwhile, Former United States ambassador to Israel, Dan Kurtzer, wrote in the Washington Post that Israel should not sign the agreement with Obama, calling it a "bribe" that will change the United States-Israel relationship to one of a political nature.
National Security Advisor Uzi Arad said Saturday that U.S. leaders had put one commitment in writing. In an interview with Channel 2, he said American officials had promised in writing not to pressure Israel again if Israel agrees to a second moratorium on building.
Arad also confirmed reports that the U.S. had promised Israel F-35 stealth fighter jets in exchange for the freeze, but said that contrary to some rumors, the jets would not be given as a gift. Israel will pay for the planes, he said, adding that details of the sale are not yet final. Minister Uzi Landau said several days ago that the jets are conditional on reaching an agreement on borders within the 90 day freeze period.
In addition to a commitment not to pressure Israel for a third construction freeze, U.S. officials had allegedly agreed that any freeze on Jewish building east of the 1948 armistice line would not include Jerusalem, and had assured Israel that America would veto anti-Israel resolutions in the United Nations Security Council.
An American official denied one of the alleged commitments on Thursday, telling Haaretz that a construction ban would include Jerusalem. “If the moratorium deal goes through, we will continue to press for quiet throughout east Jerusalem during the 90 days, regardless of what Bibi [Netanyahu] is telling Shas now,” the official said. Shas is reportedly insisting that Defense Minister Barak commit himself to signing new building permits in Judea and Samaria after the freeze, which is the way new construction was prevented by him when the first freeze was over..
The U.S. is pushing for a three-month building freeze in Judea and Samaria in order to appease Palestinian Authority leaders who dropped out of negotiations with Israel when a previous construction ban ended. The PA is demanding a total building freeze east of the armistice line, including in Jerusalem.
Previously Jews living east of the armistice line had continued their lives as usual during negotiations with the PA, with the understanding that many of the Jewish communities in those areas will remain under Israeli control under a peace deal, making construction irrelevant to the talks. Jews in Judea and Samaria are allowed to build only within the bounds of existing Israeli communities, such that construction does not have an effect on the quantity of land available to the PA.
Palestinians Fire At Least 9 Mortars from Gaza over 24 Hours
JERUSALEM, Oct. 25 – Palestinian terrorists fired at least nine mortar rounds from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli homes within 24 hours, Israeli military officials said. No one was injured.

Hamas operative fires rockets from Gaza into Israel |
Palestinians have fired at least 170 rockets and other weapons at Israel so far this year. Several mortars in the latest barrage fell in Palestinian-controlled territory.
Syrian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it was behind several of the attacks on Oct. 24; mortar fire continued on Oct. 25.
In a statement, Islamic Jihad insisted on its “right to resist any Israeli aggression against the Palestinians and to continue the jihad until the Palestinian territories are liberated.” http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=327207
Islamic Jihad is one of several terror organizations operating in Gaza. The Palestinian coastal enclave is controlled by Hamas, which is backed by Iran. On the eve of the Sept. 2 launch of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks Hamas said it was behind terror attacks in the West Bank that killed four Israeli civilians and wounded several others.
Israel holds Hamas responsible for all terror attacks from Gaza, which it has controlled with an iron hand since expelling the Palestinian Authority in a 2007 coup.
“I view Hamas as being directly responsible for any attack on the State of Israel that originates in the Gaza Strip and this is how the international community must see things,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Israel reserves the right to defend its citizens and we will continue to take all necessary measures in order to defend the State of Israel, Israeli citizens and Israeli children,” he added.
Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas are listed as terrorist organizations by the United States, Canada and the European Union. The Hamas charter calls for the destruction of Israel. http://www.memri.org/report/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/1609.htm
Israel has been bombarded by more than 10,000 rockets and mortars since it withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and these attacks continue as Israel tries to advance the peace process with the Palestinian authority.
Israel Delivers Aid to Gaza, Even Under Rocket Fire
09/14/10
by Chana Ya'ar
Hundreds of tons of construction materials were delivered to Gaza through the Israeli crossings this week despite terrorist rocket and mortar fire emanating from the region.
On Monday, the IDF Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (CoGAT) transferred 250 tons of materials, despite two separate rocket attacks on southern Israel that occurred the same day.
One of the missiles exploded next to Sderot.
Even under fire, coordination of the transfer of humanitarian aid into Gaza via the crossings continued as well.
On Monday, 180 truckloads of aid were delivered to the region via the Kerem Shalom Crossing. The delivery came in addition to the 250 tons of construction materials, intended for a project to upgrade the sewage treatment plant in the neighborhood of Sheikh Ajlin in central Gaza. Last week more than 80 tons of iron were also delivered to Gaza as part of a sewage treatment plant project in the northern part of the region, sponsored by the World Bank.
The Sheikh Ajlin sewage treatment plant project is sponsored by the German government and its KfW Bankengruppe government-owned development bank. The project was approved two months ago by Israel, the PA and the German Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Harald Kindermann.
Both sewage treatment plant projects were approved by a committee that included CoGAT Commander Maj.Gen. Eitan Dangot, PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and other international officials.
Israel Delivers Aid, PA Attacks Israelis
Palestinian Authority Arabs attacked Israeli vehicles near Karmei Zur and Alfei Menashe, hurling large rocks with sharp, jagged edges at Jewish travelers. Vehicles were damaged in both incidents.
A third attack took place near the Jewish community of Shilo, where PA Arabs hurled rocks at a car traveling along the road in the Samaria region. One Israeli civilian was wounded in the attack.
In a fourth incident, an Israeli bus was also damaged in a similar attack near the Judean Jewish community of Tekoa, near Highway 60, a road which saw two shooting attacks two weeks ago. Highway 60 winds its way from the southern Hevron Hills in Judea up past Jerusalem and farther north, into the Samaria region. Four Israelis were murdered and two were wounded in the shooting attacks.

Hamas Panicked When Israel Eased Blockade
by Hana Levi Julian
July 15, 2010, Av 4, 5770
Israel's decision to ease its blockade on Gaza has had an odd effect on the region: it has apparently thrown Gaza retailers into a panic, causing them to pressure their rulers.
As a result, the Hamas terrorist organization is fighting the implementation of the crossing agreements proposed by the Palestinian Authority and Israel. This, despite years of bitter complaints from Hamas, albeit unsubstantiated, that the blockade by Israel was causing a humanitarian crisis in the region.
According to the Gaza-based Al Ayyam newspaper, clothing retailers are claiming that rather than a lack, there is now an overabundance of selections in their market.
The problem is that since Hamas has not paid salaries, there are few customers available to buy the goods.
Soft drink manufacturers and those in the furniture industry are also complaining, as they don't want to compete with the lower prices of Israeli goods.
Both have called on the de facto Hamas government to prevent the entry of Israeli products, citing their ability to meet the needs of the local market themselves and fears they may have to close their factories if they cannot meet the competition.
Due to the goods that continue to be “imported” through the Gaza smuggler tunnels, as well as those that enter the region by truck, there is now a surplus of products in the small market.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri claimed the agreement is “part of the plot by Israelis, Arabs and Europeans to restore the rule of the [Fatah-led] Palestinian Authority in Gaza.”
Aid to Gaza Up by 60%
While Hamas backpedals on its claims that Israel has been starving its population by limiting the flow of aid through the crossings, the new policy change has resulted in what Gaza retailers are calling a glut of goods in the region.
Data gleaned from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (CoGAT) for June showed a 60 percent increase in aid transferred from Israel to Gaza via the Kerem Shalom Crossing.
A new joint task force comprised of personnel from the Palestinian Authority and the IDF's CoGAT was created to oversee the policy changes and work on advancing coordinated projects to be supervised by the international community. The task force also continues to work on finding ways to increase the capacity of goods being transferred daily through the crossings, according to a statement from the IDF Spokesman's Office.
More than 3,000 trucks crossed into Gaza through Kerem Shalom and the Karni Crossing last month. In addition, the Jewish State continued to supply the region with heating gas (4 million liters), cooking gas (4,000 tons) and diesel fuel (approximately 600,000 liters).
Some 2,500 PA residents of Gaza entered Israel as well during the month of June, passing through the Erez Crossing, which is specifically intended for human traffic. The number is a 25 percent jump over previous figures.
In total, the number of trucks making their way into Gaza through the Israeli crossings has increased by 12 percent, according to the CoGAT.

Overvolle winkels in Gaza

Mooi toneelstukje daar in Gaza.

The report, titled The Operation in Gaza (27 December 2008 – 18 January 2009): Factual and Legal aspects, is available online through the government website. http://www.mfa.gov.il/NR/rdonlyres/E89E699D-A435-491B-B2D0-017675DAFEF7/0/GazaOperation.pdf
Hamas is blamed for the operation, with the report's authors explaining that Israel had “a right and an obligation” to defend its citizens, who were under “almost incessant” rocket and mortar shell attacks from Gaza. Not only was Hamas launching increasingly frequent attacks and deliberately targeting civilians, particularly children, but the terror group was actively working to increase the range and quality of its rockets.
While the report firmly supports Israel's counter-terror operations in Gaza, it also expresses regret for civilian casualties in Gaza. “Israel makes no attempt to minimize the human costs incurred.” However, the authors point out, “civilian deaths and damage to property, even when considerable, do not necessarily mean that violations of international law as such have occurred.”
The report makes use of Israeli statistics regarding casualties of the Gaza operation. Israeli investigators found that 1,166 Gaza residents were killed in the operation, the majority of them terrorists. Hamas, which does not define Hamas “police” or Hamas fighters aged 16-18 as terrorists, disputes the numbers, and claims that more than 1,400 Gaza residents were killed, most of them civilians.
In defense of Israel's method of counting terrorists, the report makes use of Hamas propaganda and obituaries to prove that Hamas “police” are also active members of Hamas' openly terrorist armed forces.
Pictures Show Use of Civilian Shields
The report includes several pictures and aerial photographs backing Israel's claims that Hamas put Gaza civilians in danger by using them as human shields. Photos show terrorists firing rockets at Israeli towns from within Arab civilian centers, and setting up rockets and mortar launchers near private homes.
Newspapers and human rights groups are also quoted to provide proof of Hamas' abuse of its civilian population. In addition, the report makes use of testimony from Hamas terrorists captured during the operation, who admit to firing rockets from Gaza schools in order to reduce the chances of an Israeli response.
Hamas' weapons arsenal is also illustrated in several pictures, as is the damage caused by Hamas rockets that have hit Israeli towns.
Detailed Response to Allegations
The report gives detailed responses to several specific allegations involving civilian casualties. In some cases the IDF found that deaths were caused by IDF error, while in other cases investigators found that soldiers acted properly, and civilians were killed after choosing not to evacuate despite several warnings of immediate danger.
In still other cases, the IDF found that alleged Air Force strikes never took place, and the “civilians” listed as having died in the strikes were actually Hamas terrorists who had died in fighting elsewhere in Gaza.
Use of White Phosphorous
One of the controversies surrounding the Gaza operation was the IDF's alleged use of white phosphorous explosives. In fact, the IDF did not use white phosphorous as an incendiary or a weapon, but did use the substance to provide illumination or to create a smokescreen.
White phosphorous is not a banned weapon as human rights groups have claimed, the report states, as international treaties banning the use of incendiary weapons ban only those weapons used offensively, to create fires, and not those used to provide a screen.
If the IDF had refrained from using white phosphorous altogether, it would have risked more casualties, the report argues. In many cases, the use of smokescreens containing white phosphorous “prevented the need to use explosive munitions whose impact would have been considerably more dangerous,” it states.

As the fifth anniversary of Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza and the accompanying tragic expulsion of nearly 9,000 Jews from their homes nears, Israel National News presents an overview of what Gush Katif's past and accomplishments - and its goals for the immediate and long-range future.
Approximately 350 family farms and agricultural enterprises, producing $120 million in flowers and produce, were based in the Katif Bloc of Jewish towns in Gaza. Almost 70% of Israel’s organic produce originated in Gaza, as did nearly 15% of its agricultural exports, 90% of bug-free leafy vegetables, 45% of tomato exports, 95% of cherry tomato exports, and 60% of herb exports. Some 60% of Israel's geranium exports came solely from one community, Ganei Tal.
The farms employed 5,000 Jews and 5,000 Gazan Arabs. Total annual revenues were $60-70 million.
History in Brief
The first community to build in modern Jewish Gaza was Netzer Hazani, which was established in 1976. Three other IDF Nachal outposts were already there - Kfar Darom, Morag and Katif - and they later turned into full pledged towns as well.
The entire area was originally filled with vast stretches of empty sand dunes "with no birds, insects or even weeds,” one former resident said. “Even the amount of rain was small compared to today's rainfall measurements, old-timers say. Local Arabs, who called the area El Gerara, 'the cursed land,' were later happy when the Jews returned, because the land began to produce and the rain started again… When we first arrived, two Arab mukhtars came to welcome us, and asked us, ‘Don’t you know you can’t grow anything here in this cursed land? According to our tradition, the last people who lived here who grew anything were Abraham and Isaac...’”
In time, the “cursed land” that became Netzer Hazani absorbed 70 families working in greenhouse farming of flowers, celery, peppers, spices, and more.
Within two years, Kfar Darom and Moshav Katif were formed – the latter by a group of new immigrants from the United States – and it became time to establish the Gaza Coast Regional Council.
In 1979, Ganei Tal was established, creating a bloc of three towns together with Moshav Katif and Netzer Hazani, while Gadid was built some ten kilometers to the south. Later, the “city” of N’vei Dekalim was built adjacent to Gadid, forming the hub and center of the Katif bloc of Jewish communities.
At the same time, plans were underway to build more farming towns in the north and south of the Gaza area, as well as Netzarim in central Gaza. By 1984, there were 16 Jewish towns in Gaza. The area's last two towns – Shirat Hayam, literally on the beach, and Kerem Atzmona – were established in 2000, bringing the final tally to 21.
Winds of Destruction
In late 2003, with Gush Katif in its prime – featuring the best in settlement and blossoming of the Land of Israel, religious values and national idealism, heroic withstanding of terrorist and rocket attacks, and international acclaim for its agriculture – the first winds of destruction began to blow. Ariel Sharon, who had arguably been the prime force behind the plans to develop and settle Gaza with Jewish towns, announced his plan to destroy Gush Katif at a conference in Herzliya in December.
Within 20 months, the deed was done: Nearly 9,000 men, women, and children – described by all as the “salt of the earth” – found themselves without homes, livelihoods, schools, and physical roots.
Here is not the place to describe the next five years of wandering, uncertainty and general suffering; suffice it to say that retired Supreme Court Judge Eliyahu Matza, who headed the official commission of inquiry into the government’s treatment of the expellees, described it as a "complete and utter failure of the executive branch."
Plans for the Future
Though scattered around the country, most in the northern Negev and environs, the residents of Gush Katif are still united and still have big plans. Under the theme of Od Katif Chai – which means Katif Still Lives - they intend to build 18 (the numerical equivalent of Chai) new communities and initiate 18 new projects.
Among the new towns to be built or already in the initial stages thereof is Be’er Ganim, literally: Well of Gardens, north of Ashkelon. The name is an acronym of the communities from whence the new residents hail: Bdolach, Rafiah Yam, Gadid, Nisanit, Morag and others with one of those initials. Be’er Ganim was the name of a town in the Netanya region, which later merged with Or Yehuda and changed its name to Pe’er Ganim, or Beauty of the Gardens.
Other new towns will be built in the northern Negev: Katif Amatzia is to be populated by former residents of Moshav Katif, while Neta (Mirsham) will be built by residents from Tel Katifa and Kfar Darom. The former residents of the beachfront Shirat HaYam (Song of the Sea) community have changed scenery and are well into the process of building Maskiyot in the near-desert conditions of the Jordan Valley.
In addition, new neighborhoods are being added to existing cities or communities, such as N’vei Herzog in Ashkelon, Avnei Eitan in the Golan, Ganei Tal in Kibbutz Chafetz Chaim, and Shvut Katif in Yad Binyamin.
Among the 18 new projects the down-but-not-out pioneers are kicking off are: The construction of synagogues in Talmei Yafeh, Yesodot and Maskiyot; two regional community centers and four youth centers for extra-curricular, cultural and supportive activities; a family unit lecture series and workshop; 150 student scholarships; financial, medical, and vocational assistance to families; the establishment of the Gush Katif Legacy Center; and more.

Gaza Terrorists Burn Down Second UN Camp, Handcuff Guards
by Maayana Miskin
June 28, 2010, Tammuz 16, 5770
Masked terrorists stormed into a United Nations children's camp in Gaza early on Monday morning, attacked and handcuffed the camp guards, and set the place on fire. UN workers said the facility sustained heavy damage.
The attack was the second of its kind this summer. In late May terrorists set fire to the United Nation's' largest Gaza summer camp and left behind bullets and a note threatening to kill John Ging, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) head in Gaza. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/137679
Ging responded to Monday's attack by calling to “change the circumstances on the ground that are generating such extremism.” He complimented Hamas' emergency responders for responding quickly to the incident.
Ging made similar remarks following the May attack. At that time, Fatah blamed Hamas for the incident, accusing the Islamic terrorist group of “targeting the education process and the UNRWA curriculum.”
Hamas has opened its own summer camps as an alternative to UNRWA. The Hamas camps focus on teaching the Koran and terrorist philosophy, including hatred of Israel. Many include paramilitary training. Approximately 100,000 Gaza children attend Hamas camps, while 250,000 attend the UN camps.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/133062
The UN camps have faced criticism from Islamist organizations other than Hamas, including Salafi groups that consider Hamas too moderate. Salafi terrorists have been behind previous attacks in Gaza, including dozens of bombings targeting music stores, restaurants, Internet cafes and pharmacies.

Photo Evidence of ‘Myth of Siege of Gaza’
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Jun 9 '10, Sivan 27, 5770
The” myth of the siege of Gaza” has been exploded in a research report that quotes Arab sources that say “Gaza markets are saturated with goods.” The Washington Post reported last week that Gaza “pharmacies look as well-supplied as a typical Rite Aid.”
Reserve IDF officer Lt. Col. Jonathan HaLevi, a researcher for the Institute for Contemporary Affairs, wrote that Israel’s continuing supervised flow of humanitarian aide to Gaza also has helped the Gaza economy rebound.
‘Gaza is not cut off from the outside world,” he wrote, and added that the large supply of goods and merchandise, including fuel oil, that enters Gaza through smuggling tunnels and pipelines from Egypt has actually helped bring down the cost of gasoline and diesel fuel to half the price in Israel.
Claims by United Nations officials, reported without investigation by most mainstream media, have falsely promoted the image of a humanitarian crisis and a scarcity of foods and merchandise in Gaza, implying that Gaza Arabs share the plague of famine http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/137973 as in India and other countries.
HaLevi’s reported stated, “Recently, Rep. Ron Paul told Don Imus on the Fox Business Channel that Israel was "preventing food and medicine from going into Gaza. He said there are 'people that are starving' and closed with a vile suggestion that the situation of the Gazans was 'almost like in concentration camps.'"
However, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted to a Congressional committee last April, “The [Gaza] crossings are no longer completely closed…. A lot of what has been said was not permitted to cross is just not accurate.”
Janine Zacharia of the Washington Post reported last week, "If you walk down Gaza City's main thoroughfare -Salah al-Din Street - grocery stores are stocked wall-too-wall with everything from fresh Israeli yogurts and hummus to Cocoa Puffs smuggled in from Egypt.” Smuggled goods are cheaper than the regular price.
The Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency stated last February, "Gaza markets are saturated with goods." Beaches are filled with vacationers as well (photot below).
The de facto Hamas government in Gaza also has received $5 billion in cold cash since it took over control of the area from the rival Fatah faction in a bloody militia war three years ago this month. Hamas also receives millions of dollars in direct aid from Arab countries as well from the United Nations and European Union, which until last November paid for the diesel fuel to run the Gaza power plant.
The French newspaper LeMonde last October quoted Bassem Khoury, minister of national economy for the Palestinian Authority, that Hamas has profited so much from the smuggling tunnel system and outside aid that it “doesn't know what to do with its money. Taxpayers in Europe should know that as a result of this system their money ends up in Hamas' pocket."
HaLevi pointed out that the tunnel system not only supplies Hamas with more weapons it but also “serves such criminal purposes as drug running and trafficking in young women.” The Kuwaiti newspaper Awan last December reported on the phenomenon of "importing" minor girls from Egypt and selling them into prostitution in Gaza, supposedly for purposes of marriage or domestic work.
He said Hamas exploits the smuggling tunnels for “sending fighters for training in Iran and Syria, and for the import of advanced weapons systems, [including] antiaircraft and anti-tank missiles), explosives, and ammunition."
HaLevi maintained, “The position of the human rights organizations, which paint an exaggerated picture of the effects of the siege, is marred by a double standard. On the one hand, they argue vehemently that Israel is still an occupying power and must therefore see to the "security and welfare of the residents of Gaza"; yet on the other hand, the welfare and security of Gaza's residents have been severely harmed by the Hamas regime, with its gradual imposition of Islamic law while violently suppressing the opposition.
“According to their logic, Israel is obligated to help an enemy entity that is attacking it. If this were true, the United States would have a duty to extend assistance to villages in Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban fighters who are attacking coalition forces.”
The flow of weapons into Gaza occasionally is stopped by Egyptian authorities who last May seized a large cache of weapons and explosives that were slated to be smuggled into Gaza from the Sinai. The weapons stockpile included 61 anti-aircraft missiles, 40 anti-tank mines, 15 standard mines, and 5 machine guns with ammunition. Last April 1, an Egyptian newspaper reported that security forces had seized 100 anti-aircraft missiles, 45 rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and 40 explosive devices.
Egypt on High Gaza Alert
by Hillel Fendel
May 2, 2010, Iyar 18, 5770
Egypt has placed its forces on the Gaza border on high alert, suspecting that Gaza Arabs will once again overrun the border. More than 2,000 Arabs in Hamas-run Gaza held May Day demonstrations on Saturday, protesting both Israel’s and Egypt’s tight border crossings. The protests were held near the Erez crossing with Israel and the Rafiah border with Egypt.
In January 2008, hundreds of thousands of Arabs in Gaza – between 200,000 and 700,000, according to various reports – overran the Rafiah border with Egypt, after having destroying the border fence.
Resentment at Egypt
Though Israel has received much of the blame in the international media for Gaza’s partially-closed borders, local Arabs are very resentful and angry at Egypt for the lockdown and for its use of poison gas against tunnel smugglers.
Four Gaza Arab smugglers were killed last week when Egypt gassed a tunnel under the Rafiah border. Adham Abu Salaimeh, spokesman for the Gaza military health services, said that Egypt continually violates international law by using lethal gas among citizens. “This is murder in every sense,” he told the PA’s Maan news agency. Nearly 40 smugglers have been killed in this manner, he said. More than 100 have died in the tunnels from other causes, mainly tunnel collapses.
Hamas, which conquered Gaza from Fatah in 2007, issued a statement urging Arab and Islamic nations to pressure Egypt to reopen the Rafiah crossing.
Demonstrators waved red, green and black Palestinian Authority flags near Erez, in northern Gaza, in response to a call from the DFLP and other leftist factions, while a smaller-scale sit-in was held at Rafiah. "We call on the world to stop the siege of Gaza," said Ramzi Rabah, a protest organizer with the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Rocket Industry and Employment
A careful reading of international media reports concentrating on poverty in Gaza indicates that the dependence on the rocket-making industry is a strong factor in this issue. A Shanghai site, for instance, reports on an unemployed man named “Abu Nahel” who worked in a workshop until “Israeli warplane missiles targeted these workshops, claiming that they helped militants in making homemade rockets that they fired at southern Israel.” Some 23 people have been killed by such rockets.
During the year between June 2007 and June 2008, Hamas constantly fired rockets at Israel; more than 30 were fired on some days, and 18 Israelis were killed. A total of some 8,000 rockets fell on Israel between Israel’s retreat from Gaza in the summer of 2005 and December 2008. Israel left Gaza in 2006, expelling some 8000 Jews from their homes to do so. The subsequent Gazan elections which led to Hamas' government and the increased rocket fire led to closing of the crossings to Israel. Israel does allow massive amounts of humanitarian aid through the crossings.
Hamas-Ruled Gaza Receives More Aid, Markets Flowers in Europe
by Hana Levi Julian
March 24, 2010

Palestinian Authority residents in Gaza received more than 12,000 tons of humanitarian aid last week, while business owners in the region exported more flowers to Europe. The Gaza region is known for its fragrant carnations, which sell for a high price in the European Union. PA Arab business owners shipped out eight truckloads to markets on the European continent last week through the Gaza crossings.
Meanwhile, 519 trucks made their way into the region carrying wheat and flour, meat, chicken, fish and legumes, in addition to agricultural produce, hygiene products and medical supplies. Animal feed was transferred into Gaza via the conveyor terminal at the Karni Crossing. In addition, 1,079, 310 liters of diesel fuel and 837 tons of cooking gas were pumped into the region through the fuel terminal at the Nahal Oz Crossing.
The terminal at the Erez Crossing was also busy last week; 483 medical patients and their escorts crossed into Israel from Gaza in order to travel to various destinations, including facilities in Judea and Samaria, for medical treatment.
Another 67 PA Arabs entered Israel for other reasons, according to the Coordinator for Government Activities in the Territories (CoGAT). Staff members of international aid organizations traveled through the crossing in both directions; 188 staffers entered Gaza through the terminal last week, and 240 others left the region and crossed into Israel through the Erez terminal.
Despite the constant activity that takes place each week at the various crossing, Palestinian Authority government officials continue to attempt to convince the world that Israel has hermetically sealed off Gaza and is economically choking its residents. PA negotiator Saeb Erekat again reiterated this week a call by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) for Israel to completely lift its blockade on the Gaza crossings, according to the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency.
“Laying siege against the people of Gaza, creating a humanitarian disaster condemned the world over, and then making a few exceptions to what can and cannot pass through Gaza's borders is not a 'goodwill gesture', but the continuation of Israel's occupation by siege,” Erekat claimed.
However, while Erekat complains about the restricted access of PA Arabs to Gaza, kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit continues to languish as a hostage in captivity with the Hamas terrorists who rule the region. Shalit was kidnapped during a cross-border attack on an IDF base near the Kerem Shalom Crossing by a team of terrorists from three Hamas-linked terrorist groups on June 25, 2006.
Despite repeated requests by various political and religious leaders around the globe, Hamas has refused to allow any contact with the young hostage in order to determine his status – thus his condition and whereabouts remain unknown. He has also been denied the basic legal rights of visitation and medical care by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross that he is due in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
Humanitarian aid despite Hamas attacks
Despite attacks by Hamas, Israel maintains an ongoing humanitarian corridor for the transfer of perishable and staple food items to Gaza. This conduit is used by internationally recognized organizations including the United Nations and the Red Cross.
Well over a million tons of humanitarian supplies entered Gaza from Israel over the last 18 months equaling nearly a ton of aid for every man, woman and child in Gaza. Millions of dollars worth of international food aid continually flows through the Israeli humanitarian apparatus, ensuring that there is no food shortage in Gaza.
Food and supplies are shipped from Israel to Gaza six days a week. These items were channeled through aid organizations or via Gaza's private sector.

IDF coordinates the transfer of truckloads of humanitarian aid on a daily basis.

Large quantities of essential food items like baby formula, wheat, meat, dairy products and other perishables are transferred daily and weekly to Gaza. Fertilizers that cannot be used to make explosives are shipped into the Strip regularly, as are potato seeds, eggs for reproduction, bees, and equipment for the flower industry.
In 2009 alone, more than 738,000 tons of food and supplies entered Gaza. Pictures in local newspapers show local markets aplenty with fruit, vegetables, cheese, spices, bread and meat to feed 1.4 million Gazans.
In the first quarter of 2010 (January-March), 94,500 tons of supplies were transferred in 3,676 trucks to the Strip: 48,000 tons of food products; 40,000 tons of wheat; 2,760 tons of rice; 1,987 tons of clothes and footwear; 553 tons of milk powder and baby food.
In a typical week the IDF coordinates the transfer of hundreds of trucks containing about 15,000 tons of supplies. During the week of May 18, 2010 there were more than 100 truckloads of animal food, 65 trucks of fruit and vegetables; 22 truckloads of sugar, some 27 truckloads of meat, poultry and fish; and 40 trucks of dairy products. At holiday times, Israel increases transfers. During the Muslim holy days of Ramadhan and Eid al-Adha, Israel shipped some 11,000 heads of cattle into the Strip.
Maintaining medical aid for all in need
The medical corridor
No Palestinian is denied medical care in Israel. However, if the Hamas regime does not grant permits for medical care, the Israeli government can do nothing to help the patient. Israel will facilitate all cases of medical treatments from Gaza, unless the patient is a known perpetrator of terror.
Israel maintains a corridor for the transfer of medical patients out of Gaza, and about 200 medical staff members go through the crossings every month. Israel also helps coordinate the transfer of Jordanian doctors into Gaza.
In 2009 alone, 10,544 patients and their companions left the Gaza Strip for medical treatment in Israel. Moreover, there were 382 emergency evacuations from Gaza for medical purposes.
The Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem donates $3 million in aid annually to treat Palestinians in Israel. Following fears of a swine flu outbreak, three Israeli hospitals were assigned to treat cases in the Gaza Strip and 44,500 immunizations were transferred to the Strip.
Since 2005, Palestinians exploited medical care arrangements more than 20 times to carry out terror attacks.
Medical equipment
In 2009, some 4,883 tons of medical equipment and medicine were brought in.
In the first quarter of 2010, Israel shipped 152 trucks of medical supplies and equipment into Gaza. In a typical week (in May 2010), some 37 truckloads of hygiene products were shipped to Gaza through the land crossings. In addition, a new CAT scan machine was recently shipped to Gaza.
In 2009, Israel coordinated the transfer of medical supplies for the disabled including wheelchairs, crutches and first aid kits. Other equipment shipped to Gaza include heart-monitors, baby feeding tubes, dental equipment, medical books, ambulance emergency equipment, artificial limbs and infant sleeping bags.
Building for the future: Infrastructure and economic aid
Building materials
While the import of cement and iron has been restricted into Gaza since these are used by the Hamas to cast rockets and bunkers, monitored imports of truckloads of cement, iron, and building supplies such as wood and windows are regularly coordinated with international parties. Already in the first quarter of 2010, 23 tons of iron and 25 tons of cement were transferred to the Gaza Strip.
On 13 May 2010, Israel allowed approximately 39 tons of building material into Gaza to help rebuild a damaged hospital. The construction material for al Quds hospital was transferred after safeguards in place and French assurances ensured that the construction material would not be diverted elsewhere.
On 24 May 2010 Israel opened the Kerem Shalom crossing to 97 trucks loaded with aid and goods, including six trucks holding 250 tons of cement and one truck loaded with five tons of iron for projects executed and operated by UNRWA.
Electricity
According to the UN report of May 2010, 120 megawatts (over 70%) of the Strip's electricity supply comes from the Israeli electric grid, while 17 MWs come from Egypt and 30 MWs are produced by the Gaza city power station. Since January 2010, there has been deterioration in the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip since the Hamas regime is unwilling to purchase the fuel to run the Gaza City power station.
Throughout 2009 Israel transferred 41 trucks of equipment for the maintenance of Gaza's electricity grid.
Israel facilitates the transfer of fuel through the border, and maintains that the diversion of fuel from domestic power generators to other uses is wholly a Hamas decision. Over 133 million liters of fuel entered Gaza from Israel over the last 18 months.
Sewage
During the first quarter of 2010, the UN coordinated with Israel the transfer of equipment for UNWRA to upgrade the sewage pumping station. In 2009, 127 trucks containing more than 3,000 tons of hypochlorite entered the Gaza Strip for water purification purposes. Moreover, 48 trucks of equipment for improving the sanitation infrastructure led to a substantial reduction in the Beit Lahya facility's waste levels.
Economy
The United States, Israel, Canada, and the European Union have frozen funds to the Palestinian Hamas government since 2006, recognizing it as a terror organization. Israel has taken measures to support trade and commerce, the banking system, and the existing financial market in the Gaza Strip.
Gazans produce much of their own food products including olives, citrus, vegetables, Halal beef, and dairy products. Primary exports from Gaza are cut flowers and citrus, with trade partners being Israel, Egypt and the West Bank. During 2009, 7.5 million tons of flowers and 54 tons of strawberries were exported from Gaza with Israeli cooperation.
In 2009, 1.1 billion shekels (about $250 million) were transferred to the Gaza Strip for the ongoing activity of international organizations and to pay the salaries of Palestinian Authority workers. 40 million damaged bank notes were traded for new bills, and at the request of the Palestinian Monetary Fund, 282.5 million shekels were transferred from Gazan to Israeli banks.
In February 2010, an agreement was reached with the Palestinian Authority's National Insurance Department to ensure that pensions reached those formerly employed in Israel. The funds were deposited in banks in Judea and Samaria, while the Palestinian Authority was given the responsibility of distributing the funds to the pensioners in Gaza.

Whenever possible Israel allows for diplomatic activities and trade and commerce with the Gaza Strip.
In additional to medical travel, 21,200 activists from international organizations and over 400 diplomatic delegations were permitted entry into Gaza, while 2,200 Palestinians employed by international organizations were given exit permits from the Gaza Strip.
